Likas syabu trafficker's death sentence replaced with life imprisonment

KOTA KINABALU (June 17): A self-employed man, who received the capital punishment for trafficking in syabu, escaped the hangman's noose after the Court of Appeal here on Tuesday substituted it with an imprisonment for life.
Justice Dato' Hj Azman Abdullah, who sat together with Justices Datuk Azhahari Kamal Ramli and Datuk Noorin Badaruddin, unanimously quashed the death penalty imposed on Ang Eng Khong, 42, after allowing the appeal against his sentence.
Ang was sentenced to life imprisonment of 30 years from the date of his arrest on October 31, 2018 and 12 strokes of the cane.
On February 6, 2023, he was sentenced to death by hanging by a High Court here for trafficking in 1,746.8 grams of syabu.
Ang was found guilty of a charge under Section 39B (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39B (2) of the same Act after a full trial.
The indictment provides for the death sentence or imprisonment for life and whipping, upon conviction.
Ang was convicted of trafficking in the syabu at Taman Awam Teluk Likas on Oct 31, 2018.
Earlier, counsel Hamid Ismail submitted among others that his client's representation letter had been accepted by the prosecution.
Hamid explained that the representation was to substitute the death penalty to life imprisonment pursuant to the Abolition of Mandatory Death Penalty 2023.

Man nabbed after high-speed chase, found with suspected drugs
BUTTERWORTH: A man was arrested following a high-speed chase in the Bagan Dalam area here last night, after he allegedly attempted to flee from policemen and obstructed civil servants in the performance of their duties. The incident, which happened at about 10pm yesterday, came to light after a video of the chase went viral on social media. Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Abd Rahman said policemen from the motorcycle patrol unit of the district police headquarters had ordered a suspicious locally manufactured vehicle to stop three times using beacon lights and sirens. He said the driver, however, ignored the instructions and sped off. "The suspect was eventually apprehended in front of the Ampang Jajar Flats in Butterworth. "A body search revealed a transparent plastic packet believed to contain syabu. "A subsequent urine test revealed the suspect tested positive for methamphetamine," he said in a statement tonight. The suspect has been remanded for four days until June 23 for investigation. The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant, as well as Sections 12(2) and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Anuar said a background check also revealed that the suspect had three prior drug-related offences. He urged the public not to sensationalise the incident, warning that it could disrupt public order and interfere with the ongoing investigation. Used clothes seller acquitted, discharged of possessing drugs

KOTA KINABALU (June 20): A used clothes seller was acquitted and discharged by a Sessions Court here today from two counts of possessing cannabis and syabu. Judge Dayang Ellyn Narisa Abang Ahmad freed Mohd Jamri Basir, 24, after a full trial. The first count accused Mohd Jamri of possessing 158.6 grams of cannabis at an apartment at Jalan Tuaran Bypass on May 15, 2020. The charge was under Section 39A (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 6 of the same Act. The second count accused him of having 6.64 grams of syabu at the same place and on the same day. The alleged offence was under Section 12 (2), punishable under Section 39A (1), both of the same Act. The prosecution commended the case on December 7, 2022 and rested it on August 15, 2024. Ten witnesses were called by the prosecution while the defence called three witnesses, including Mohd Jamri. Mohd Jamri was represented by counsel Dominic Chew Ban Huat.

Court extends remand order for couple involved in Sibu drug trafficking case
SIBU: Sibu Magistrate's Court today granted an extension of the remand for a husband and wife recently arrested for allegedly masterminding a drug trafficking syndicate around Sibu. Magistrate Oon Kork Chern allowed the 52-year-old male suspect to be remanded for seven days, while the 44-year-old female suspect would be remanded for four days to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Previously, both suspects had been remanded for seven days, which ended today. The application for the extended remand was submitted by police investigating officer Insp Aminur Rizwan Saiful Bahari. On June 16, police successfully busted a drug trafficking syndicate in the town, seizing various types of drugs and assets totaling over RM8.5 million after carrying out raids at three locations here on June 12 and 13.
