China's Baidu looks to patent AI system to decipher animal sounds
BEIJING, May 8 (Reuters) - Ever wished you could understand what your cat is trying to tell you? A Chinese tech company is exploring whether it's possible to translate those mysterious meows into human language using artificial intelligence.
Baidu (9888.HK), opens new tab, owner of China's largest search engine, has filed a patent with China National Intellectual Property Administration proposing a system to convert animal vocalisations into human language, according to a patent document published this week.
Scientists have long attempted to decode animal communication, and Baidu's patent represents the latest effort to leverage AI to do so.
The document says the system will collect animal data, including vocal sounds, behavioural patterns, and physiological signals, which will be preprocessed and merged before an AI-powered analysis designed to recognise the animal's emotional state.
The emotional states would then be mapped to semantic meanings and translated into human language.
The system could allow "deeper emotional communication and understanding between animals and humans, improving the accuracy and efficiency of cross-species communication," Baidu said in the patent document.
"There has been a lot of interest in the filing of our patent application," a Baidu spokesperson said when asked how soon the company could turn the patent into a product. "Currently, it is still in the research phase."
Baidu was among the first major Chinese companies to invest heavily in AI following the 2022 debut of OpenAI's ChatGPT.
It unveiled its latest AI model, Ernie 4.5 Turbo, last month, saying it matched the industry's best in several benchmark tests. However, the Ernie chatbot has struggled to gain traction amid fierce competition.
A number of efforts are underway outside China to try and interpret what animals want to convey.
International researchers at Project CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative) have been using statistical analysis and AI since 2020 to understand how sperm whales communicate, while the Earth Species Project, a non-profit founded in 2017 whose backers include LinkedIn's Reid Hoffman, is also trying to use AI to decode animal communication.
Local media reports about Baidu's patent application sparked discussion on Chinese social media platforms late on Wednesday.
While some were excited about the possibility of eventually being better able to understand their pets, others were sceptical.
"While it sounds impressive, we'll need to see how it performs in real-world applications," commented a user on Weibo.

I'm not sure which is more impressive. 10 It's called the PencilVac, and I've had a go with it behind closed doors at Dyson's Oxfordshire labs. Before I even grabbed the thing, I was blown away. Surely this is just a broom in disguise? Is Sir James Dyson having me on? It measures a frankly ludicrous 38mm across. That's about three Dairy Milk bars stacked on top of each other. BIN-CREDIBLE! All of the usual Dyson tech – the batteries, bin, and motor – has been crammed into the handle. So you've got battery cells at the top, followed by the computer system, then a shrunken motor that's Dyson's fastest yet. Next comes the bin, which uses a new compression system to fit five times more dust than its apparent 0.08-litre capacity. After all, Dyson tells me that most of a 'full' bin is usually air – so there's plenty of room for squashing. Then there's a dust separation mechanism, brush bars, and a Fluffycones cleaner head with a cone design that shifts long hair off to the side – so it can be sucked back up instead of requiring you to cut it out with scissors. You don't see most of this, of course. PencilVac just looks like a Dyson that's been hitting the treadmill. I'LL Naturally it all sounds like a vacuum cleaning dream, so I grab the handle and away I go. Dyson has built a kind of vacuum cleaning assault course for me that I whizz along effortlessly. And at the end is a low shelf that I drop straight under. This thing lays almost flat – which is no surprise, given that is pretty much is flat. Helping this image is a built-in laser that exposes dirt and debris. It's the vacuuming equivalent of night vision goggles and a red-dot sight. I dart between objects with stunning agility. I was born to do this. The room fades away. I daydream about running off with it, and living out my days as a kind of vacuuming sensei, cleaning the most complicated floor-spaces I can find. But I can't become Dyson's Mr Miyagi just yet, because the PencilVac isn't out until 2026, and still doesn't have a UK price. In order to fit it in the handle of the machine, we had to reengineer every component of the motor – down to the micron – while increasing its speed to 140,000RPM and maximising its power density for high-performance. It was clear that we couldn't use cyclones for the dust separation, because they were too big for the 38mm diameter, so we had to develop something entirely new. The new slim, in-line format meant we could use dust compression technology in a small diameter, but over a long area to maximise the bin capacity, all while ensuring effective filtration performance and no loss of suction. What was the biggest challenge to overcome in building the PencilVac? Developing the new Fluffycones cleaner head was perhaps the greatest challenge we faced – but also the most rewarding! Japan scraps US meeting after Washington demands more defense spending -FT
WASHINGTON, June 20 (Reuters) - Japan has canceled a regular high-level meeting with its key ally the United States after the Trump administration demanded it spend more on defense, the Financial Times reported on Friday. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had been expected to meet their Japanese counterparts in Washington on July 1 for annual 2+2 security talks. But Tokyo scrapped the meeting after the U.S. side asked Japan to boost defense spending to 3.5 per cent of GDP, higher than an earlier request of 3 per cent, the paper cited unnamed sources familiar with the matter, including two officials in Tokyo, as saying. A U.S. official who did not want to be identified confirmed Japan had "postponed" the talks but said the decision was made several weeks ago. The source did not cite a reason. A non-government source familiar with the issue said he had also heard Japan had pulled out of the meeting, but not the reason for it doing so. U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said she had no comment on the FT report when asked about it at regular briefing, and the Pentagon also had no immediate comment. Japan's embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment. The Financial Times said the new higher spending demand was made in recent weeks by Elbridge Colby, the third-most senior Pentagon official, who has also recently upset another key U.S. ally in the Indo-Pacific by launching a review of a project to provide Australia with nuclear-powered submarines. In March, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said that other nations do not decide Japan's defense budget after Colby called in his nomination hearing to be under secretary of defense for policy for Tokyo to spend more to counter China. Japan and other U.S. allies have been engaged in difficult trade talks with the United States over U.S. President Donald Trump's worldwide tariff offensive. The FT said the decision to cancel the July 1 meeting was also related to Japan's July 20 Upper House elections, at which the ruling Liberal Democratic Party is expected to suffer a loss of seats. It comes ahead of a meeting of the U.S.-led NATO alliance in Europe next week, at which Trump is expected to press his demand that European allies boost their defense spending to 5 percent of GDP.

FCC orders review of 'Cyber Trust Mark' program over China ties
June 20 (Reuters) - Federal Communications Commission chair Brendan Carr said on Friday he had ordered a review of the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark program over "potentially concerning ties to the government of China."
