CALL me a hypocrite. I hate SPF. I use it, of course religiously, but the residue left behind gives me the ick.
Thankfully, there's whole a new breed of SPF sticks hitting shelves. I put three to the test.

We put three SPF sticks to the test for the summer
Budget
Soltan Active 8 Hour Protect Suncare Stick SPF50+, £7 for 25g, boots
4
This Soltan SPF Stick is great value, but not the most sophisticated
Credit: supplied
On the outside, this stick looks to be the smallest of the three – but it actually has the most product inside.
It's super-compact, making it great for popping into my handbag.
The stick is quite hard, so it drags on skin, which slows down application and a few dandruff-like pieces flaked off, which meant I then needed to rub it in with my hands.
This defeats the point somewhat, although it ensures you don't end up with stripes should you miss a section.
It's great value, but not the most sophisticated.
Mid-range
Tocobo Cica Cooling Sun Stick SPF50+ PA++++, £16 for 18g, boots
4
The Tocobo Cica Cooling Sun Stick truly feels invisible on skin
Credit: supplied
This is the latest stick to enter my stash, and it's gone straight into my handbag – it truly feels invisible on skin.
Initially, the shape isn't great as it dips in the middle so you don't get even coverage, but after a couple of swipes the stick levels off.
It promises to reduce skin temperature in just three seconds, and while I've not noticed the cooling effect promised, I'm convinced that the calming cica ingredient has helped take the sting out of a recent insect bite.
I usually cannot stop itching them, and I didn't feel the need to at all while the SPF was on.
Luxury
Clarins Invisible Sun Care Stick SPF 50, £25 for 17g, Boots
4
The Clarins Invisible Sun Care Stick SPF 50 smells great and is suitable for sensitive skin
Credit: supplied
I first used this a couple of years ago, and in the time since I've got my whole family hooked.
The stick is a transparent, orange hue so it doesn't leave any white cast behind, and you can see where you're applying it as it's shiny at first (although quickly absorbs into skin, so don't worry about it being sticky).
It smells great, so you can skip wearing perfume over it as it reduces the effectiveness.
It's still suitable for sensitive skin; mine is acne-prone and my mum has eczema, yet we're huge fans.

The gorgeous summer wardrobe must-have runs in a huge range of sizes too - from UK 6 to UK 24. Whatever your size, it may be worth going up one - as one customer, who's between 10 and 12, said their brand new size 12 was ''tight'' on them. And did we mention the wallet-friendly price tag? Thrifty fashionistas can snap up this fabulous dress for just £22.50 - and you'll be rewarded with a whopping 22 Nectar Card points too. 'I adore this colour', cries Dunnes Stores fan as she tries on €40 'ultra-feminine' dress What's more, the frock also boasts a timeless design - and it's sure to remain a firm staple for the summers to come. So if you're looking to get your hands on it, you may need to run to your nearest store before it gets sold out. Shoppers have also been loving the butter yellow Cutwork Midaxi Strappy Dress they say "fits like a dream" thanks to its elasticated back, and suits all body shapes. Hottest fashion trends of 2025 Fabulous' Fashion Editor Clemmie Fieldsend shares the biggest trends from the high street. The East/West Bag Baguette bags have had a good run, after returning from the 1990s' shoulders of Sarah Jessica Parker to modern-day fashion icons, like Hailey Bieber. In 2025, the East/West bag is a similar but elongated shape and has long, thin straps that are easy to throw over your shoulder. They've been on runway models' arms at nearly ever designer show - think Burberry, Givenchy and Bottega Veneta - and are hitting the high street now, too. Powder pink Bright fuchsia pink had its day after the release of Barbie in 2023 and now the more polished and expensive-looking pale shade is taking over for 2025. Pantone may say that it's the year of Mocha Mousse, but the catwalks say otherwise! From Prada to Erdem, the subtle look was all over the spring/summer catwalks, worn head-to-toe or on its own. If the sugary shade is too girly for you, then look to sharp suiting for a androgynous take on the colour. The shell jacket The '80s classic is back, but with a sleek and minimal new twist for 2025. We all know we're likely to see rain for most of spring, so your practical coat of choice should be a cagoule jacket. Depop revealed one of its big trend predictions for this year is retro sportswear, with surges already seen in '80s windbreakers'. Seen everywhere from the stylish streets of Copenhagen to the Miu Miu catwalk, now mums who have an emergency raincoat crumpled underneath their pushchair are very much in fashion! The turn-up jeans While the shape of jeans remains the same for this year and barrel-legs will still be everywhere, the way we're styling them is different. This season, transform your wide-leg, baggy denims into turn-ups. For this look, size doesn't matter, so while deep turn-ups are a hit from jean trend-leaders Citizens of Humanity, a slight fold is still just as good - but only as it's just one single fold. Peep-toe shoe Get your pedicures booked in sharpish, as this season your toes are the main event. After a long hiatus, the peep-toe has been welcomed back into the fashion fold, with brands like Hermes, Miu Miu and Tory Burch showing plain and embellished footwear in this style. From mules to pumps and clogs (yes, clogs will be around too!), there are lots of different styles that are set to sweep the high street. Sheer blouses See-through looks have always lived on the catwalk, but have rarely filtered into everyday life - until now. Designers Ralph Lauren and Tom Ford loved sheer looks on their S/S '25 catwalks and M&S even had sellout success with its black sheer pencil skirt last season. Expect to see more sheer looks lining supermarket aisles and high street shops in the form of skirts, tops and frocks. It's also in the colour of the season, which instantly ticks the box for on-trend fashion. The stunning summer wardrobe staple is currently priced at £32 and comes in sizes six to 24. Describing it online, the Sainsbury's team say: "An elegant choice for summer outings and sun-soaked holidays, this yellow midaxi dress comes in a strappy style. "Designed with cutwork embroidery, a v-neckline, adjustable straps, finished with shirred detailing at the back. Finish your look with mesh ballerina pumps." Unsurprisingly, it has already scored countless five-star reviews, with one fan writing: "Love colour, style and fit of this dress. Comfortable and lovely material.'' A second wrote: "This is stunning dress which because of the double layer renders it non see through, excellent fit true to size and great length. As you can tell I love this dress."

Julia, who posts under @justliia4, wrote: 'How I turned my 5 hairs into 100,000. 'I got the trick from my hairdresser.' The only thing you need to get, according to Julia is L'Oreal's Elvive Styliste Mousse, which is said to 'boosts your hair volume by lifting from the root.' You can currently pick up a bottle from Tesco for a 150ml size. Julia shared how she starts with damp, clean hair and then shakes the bottle well. She then squeezes some of the mousse into her hands and then applies it to her locks. The social media user advised: 'Distribute it upwards into your hair (more at the roots). You then need to blow dry your hair as normal - and she advised doing it upside down for extra volume. In the clip, which has racked up over 300 likes, she showed how she uses a rounded brush to create extra volume and shape at the front. Many people were impressed with the results, with one saying: 'It looks great.' According to the product description, thin hair needs to be 'texturized from root to tip and requires long lasting hold.' The results are said to last up to 48 hours with its 'strong fixing power.' 3 Julia sweared by using L'Oreal's Elvive Styliste Mousse Credit: Elvive HAIR LOSS REASONS Jack Merrick-Thirlway, creative director at Neville Hair & Beauty, said hereditary hair loss is the most common type of hair loss and is transmitted through your genes. This type of hair loss can start from teen years and although will be difficult to treat, it can be slowed down if treated immediately. Hormonal imbalances may also cause you to lose hair. Pregnancy and the menopause are two key times when hormonal imbalances can occur, leading to changes in hair thickness. However, chronic stress and certain medications can also contribute to these imbalances. Another hair saboteur is excessive friction. Jacks says those who are wearing a tight ponytail repeatedly may find themselves experiencing hair loss. Finally, using the wrong products or having too many chemical treatments can lead to hair loss. HAIR GROWTH TIPS So, how can we encourage our hair to grow? Jack says that when shopping for new products to help with hair thickness, there are few ingredients to look out for. 'I'd advise looking out for ingredients such as biotin, collagen, amino acids and products containing vitamin B3. These all help strengthen the hair follicles and promote growth. 'That said, if you feel out of your depth, you can also seek advice with your hair stylist.' Be wary of too many chemicals in your styling products as they can exacerbate hair loss - and you should also not wash it too often. 'To ensure your hair stays healthy it is important not to over wash it,' advises Jack. 'Instead try and limit washing your hair to two or three times a week. "Use a gentle shampoo and conditioner to make sure you do not remove any moisture.'

B&Q slashes £11 ornament that instantly makes your patio seem bigger – it creates a ‘bold' look & lasts all year round

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IF your stuck for space on your garden patio, don't worry as a budget buy can help make it seem bigger. Gardening pros have shared their top tips for maximising your outdoor space this summer. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 A simple step can help make the most cramped patios feel big and spacious (Stock image) Credit: Getty The experts at Living Etc. broke down the best ways to make your patio seem bigger. Garden designer Karen McClure explained that the methods are "tried and tested". So while it may seem like adding plants to your space will cause clutter, it actually works to maximise your space. And Karen recommends one tree in particular for levelling up your patio. "Use ornamental feature trees," she advised anyone struggling with limited outdoor space. "Multi-stem specimens in particular can be kept to a controlled height in a large feature pot, and can create a lovely focal point as well as give interest at a higher level. Be bold." She added that the number of plant varieties should be kept to a minimum. "Too many varieties can create a busy and chaotic feel, whereas a simple planting palette will feel harmonised, soothing, and calm," she said. And if you're looking for a budget-friendly ornamental tree, B&Q has just the thing. The Ornamental Prunus Incisa "Kojo-no-Mai" Fuji Cherry Tree is available for just £10.79. I transformed my garden patio into summer haven for less than £100 with cheap B&M buys including gadget to keep bugs out Usually referred to as the cherry tree, this plant has a compact, rounded shape and a gently spreading habit. This makes it suitable for planting in small gardens or areas with limited space. Katie pointed out that placing your trees in sleek planters makes sure they only take up a minimal amount of floor space. You can also opt to light your plants at night, giving your space a new lease of life after dusk. She also recommended incorporating mirrors around your patio to reflect your plants. Garden features that add the most value to a house A well-kept garden can add anywhere between 5-20% to the value of a property. carried out a study and consulted 36 estate agents, garden designers and property professionals from across the UK. And the experts revealed the garden feature which adds the most value to a property is a shed. Shed - 82% Patio or paving - 76% Secure fencing, walls or gates - 72% Outdoor lighting - 66% Sturdy decking - 62% Water features eg. fountain or pond - 58% Modern garden furniture - 54% Artificial lawn/grass - 40% This makes it seem like there are even more plants around your patio area. Mirrors also help to bounce light and create the illusion of additional space. And a £4 Home Bargains buy will help to add a "whimsical touch" to your garden. Plus another tree helps to add privacy to your garden, and it's now cheaper than ever. Or you can add a fast-growing flower to cover eyesore walls and fences in your garden.
