Final journey home: Community groups unite in 19-hearse convoy for UPSI crash victims
JERTIH, June 9 — Nineteen hearses were dispatched to Perak to transport the remains of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who were killed in a tragic road accident along the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, early this morning.
Pertubuhan Amal Komuniti Besut (Amal Besut), chairman Mohd Azizul Azli Mohd Sani, said six of the hearses were provided by the community charity organisation and one by Amal Setiu.
'The rest came from mosques in Besut, the Kuala Besut state assembly coordinator's office and several non-governmental organisations in Pasir Puteh, Kelantan,' he said when met at Masjid Hadhari today.
Mohd Azizul Azli said 46 volunteers were involved in the convoy, including 16 individuals trained in Islamic funeral rites to assist with preparations before the remains were brought home.
He added that Amal Besut also brought along complete funeral management supplies, including burial shrouds.
'All funeral and transport services for the victims are provided free of charge by Amal Besut,' he said.
Meanwhile, Besut police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad said the district police headquarters had been assigned to escort the hearse convoy to and from Perak to ensure a smooth journey. — Bernama

Gerik crash: Bus operator to be charged
BUTTERWORTH: The Road Transport Department (RTD) is in the final stages of completing investigation papers to prosecute the operator of the bus company involved in the accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in Gerik on June 9. Its director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said it was preparing two investigation papers, one involving the bus operating company and the other involving the company that leased the bus. "At the moment, the investigation is in its final phase, and the papers are expected to be handed over to the prosecution soon, likely within a month," he told reporters after the MyLesen B2 Driving Licence handover ceremony at the PICCA Convention Centre here today. He was responding to a question on whether the RTD would prosecute the owner of the bus company involved in the accident. When asked whether the investigation was affected by allegations that the operator had suffered a heart attack, Aedy Fadly denied the matter. He said action against the operator was being taken in accordance with existing regulations, and there was no issue related to health conditions. "However, if he (the owner) is hospitalised or otherwise indisposed, we will wait before taking further action. "But for now, we are proceeding with the investigation papers," he added. Transport Minister Anthony Loke was reported as saying that the RTD would take legal action against the bus company if it was found to have violated regulations or failed to ensure operational safety. Fifteen UPSI students were killed when the bus they were in collided with a multi-purpose vehicle along Jalan Jeli-Gerik near Tasik Banding, Perak.

Regarding the allegation that the JPJ could not record the bus company's operator's statement because he suffered a heart attack, Aedy Fadly said his side was not informed about the matter. 'He (the bus operator) had a heart attack, it has nothing to do with the JPJ and I have not received any reports saying otherwise. We will still take action; if he goes to the hospital we will wait,' he added. In the incident on June 9, 15 UPSI students died when the bus they were in overturned in an accident at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB), near Tasik Banding, Gerik. The bus carrying 42 university students was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak when it collided with a Perodua Alza before overturning.
