Not only did the victory end a seven-game losing streak, but it vaulted the Mets back into a tie with the Phillies atop the NL East, meaning the winner of Sunday night's contest will be in sole possession of first place.

The Mets will send David Peterson to the mound on Sunday opposite fellow southpaw Jesus Luzardo.
Peterson has put up superb numbers in the first half, pitching to a 2.60 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 86 ⅔ innings. The 29-year-old's underlying numbers also sparkle, as Peterson ranks in the 88th percentile in barrel rate, 95th percentile in groundball percentage, and 95th percentile in pitching run value, per Baseball Savant.
The Phillies are an above-average team when it comes to doing damage against left-handed pitching, but Peterson is not your average southpaw this season.
Jesus Luzardo is averaging 10.43 strikeouts per 9 innings for the Phillies this season.

The 27-year-old from Lima, Peru, may not have the strongest surface-level numbers, but his advanced metrics are solid.
Luzardo ranks in the 81st percentile in barrel rate, 65th percentile in xERA, and is in the 77th percentile when it comes to whiff rate.
Luzardo's 2.87 FIP is a run and a half lower than his ERA (4.41), which suggests he's pitching better than his results suggest. A ridiculously high .373 BABIP is almost certainly the culprit.

'We're not trying to make excuses for the kid, but that is something we talk about.' Mendoza said Alvarez didn't resist when presented with the decision. 'He listened a lot,' Mendoza said. 'And then there was a follow-up where it's like, 'I want to make sure I am playing.' ' Alvarez's best season with the Mets occurred in 2023 when he hit 25 homers as a rookie. But the last two seasons have been disappointments for him — he missed significant time last year following surgery to repair a torn left thumb ligament. Behind the plate there have been lapses, most recently in Atlanta last week when Alvarez threw to the wrong base in the 10th inning, costing the Mets an opportunity to nail the baserunner who ultimately became the winning run. 'I feel like he's got better with his exchanges and throwing guys out,' Mendoza said. 'But the receiving and blocking are probably areas where we want to see improvement. Obviously, he's got to play.' The Mets know what they have in Senger, who opened the season on the major league roster with Alvarez rehabbing from surgery. But Mendoza said the organization's comfort with Senger — who has received high grades defensively — didn't factor into the decision to demote Alvarez. 'When we're making this decision, it's all about the player,' Mendoza said, referring to Alvarez. 'It was more about what is best for Alvy, what is best for the team and organization when we are looking at the present and the future. But it's nice to have a guy like Senger who has already shown he can handle that role.' Not only will he be available, though, but he's also becoming a much more realistic option for the team, too. Robert is 27 years old and has stolen 21 bases in 2025. While his .192 average is low, he has a history of being a strong hitter. In 2023, Robert hit 38 home runs and 36 doubles, finishing the year with a .857 OPS. He'd be a much-needed power bat in the lineup, and paired with his above-average defense in center, could be a great addition to the club. And with this update, the chances of landing Robert look a lot better. The Phillies have the prospects and the ammo, but will need to manipulate money to make a trade work. Philadelphia has been looking for center field help for a while now, and while Brandon Marsh and Johan Rojas haven't panned out, Robert could be the solution.
