‘Blessing in disguise': Why Awami League's Obaidul Quader sees opening in Bangladesh turmoil

India Today29-05-2025

Obaidul Quader, general secretary of the Awami League and a senior cabinet member of the erstwhile Sheikh Hasina government, has largely remained out of public eye in the 10 months since the political upheaval and regime change in Bangladesh. On August 5 last year, the day Hasina had to give up power and hastily leave for India, Quader found himself hiding in a toilet for nearly five hours as protesters stormed Awami League offices across Dhaka. Eventually discovered by demonstrators sympathetic to his plight, he was smuggled out in protesters' clothing.advertisementIn a candid and revealing interview from an undisclosed location, Quader shared with INDIA TODAY the events of that fateful day, the current state of affairs in Bangladesh under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus and his vision for the Awami League. While reflecting on past missteps and the party's road ahead, he also issued a sharp critique of the present regime—particularly the alleged influence of fundamentalist elements—while defending the military's call for elections and clarifying his own role during the July 2024 uprising.Q. It has been nearly a year since the Awami League was ousted from power. Bangladesh now appears mired in a new wave of uncertainty. How do you interpret the current situation?
A. I consider this a blessing in disguise. It presents an opportunity—one that could evolve into something much larger, perhaps explosive. The people of Bangladesh are beginning to recognise that their lives were markedly better under Sheikh Hasina's leadership. They are now drawing comparisons between the present regime under Muhammad Yunus and the governance we provided. Shockingly, fundamentalists call the shot in this government. Even the Bangladesh Nationalist Party seems disillusioned with the interim government. I believe this growing discontent could very well culminate in an organised agitation.advertisementQ. Given that the Awami League has been proscribed, do you still view this as an opening for your party?A. Absolutely. We shall overcome these restrictions and re-emerge with renewed purpose. For us, it is not merely a question of regaining power; it is about defending the nation's core interests and the wellbeing of its people. The Awami League cannot simply be expunged from the collective consciousness of Bangladesh—we embody the spirit of the Liberation War and the legacy of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. We have made mistakes in the past—there have been missteps. But we are willing to acknowledge them. If we must seek people's forgiveness, we shall do so unreservedly. The party today is purged of all sins.Q. Many within your party label Bangladesh army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman a traitor. Do you share that sentiment?A. No, I do not. The military in Bangladesh is not as politically entrenched as it is in Pakistan. Moreover, during her rule, Sheikh Hasina extended full support to the armed forces, ensuring significant improvements in their infrastructure and capabilities. It is often the case that the military may articulate certain positions, but finds itself unable to act decisively upon them. That said, we are not interested in dwelling on the past. Our focus is firmly on the future. Our leader shares this perspective. At present, the army is calling for elections—and we see nothing wrong with that demand.advertisementQ. There are serious allegations that you personally ordered the Chhatra League to suppress the July 2024 uprising.A. These accusations are categorically false. I was not in a position to issue such directives to the Chhatra League (student wing of Awami League). Some have even gone so far as to accuse me of murder—when I have not harmed so much as an ant in my life. However, when I witnessed attacks on our party offices and members, what was I to do? As general secretary of the party, was I expected to sit idle? I did what was necessary—I resisted. That is all.The initial protests were centred around the anti-quota movement, led primarily by students. However, over time, foreign actors became involved, manipulating the demonstrators. Many of the constituents—labourers, farmers, rickshaw-pullers and daily wagers—were either misled or incentivised financially. And now, we see the interim government moving to sell off our national assets. The people are beginning to see the consequences.advertisementQ. What really happened on August 5, 2024?A. By now, the events of that day are widely known. What I can share is that I remained in Bangladesh, in hiding, for three months following the departure of our prime minister, who was compelled to flee the country. That said, I would like to emphasise once again that the Awami League is focused on the future. Our primary objective is to safeguard the interests of Bangladesh and its people. We acknowledge that errors were made, and we are prepared to seek forgiveness where necessary. However, for the sake of the nation's stability and democratic integrity, and to keep fundamentalists at bay, the interim government must step down.Subscribe to India Today Magazine

Why Trump attacked Iran after seeking two weeks to decide? Report says Iran's Fordow nuclear site showed...

(File) Israel-Iran war: Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump said he would decide within 'two weeks' whether or not to attack Iran, but two days later, American bombers launched attacks at Iranian nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan, effectively marking the US' entry into the Israel-Iran war. But what prompted Trump to attack the Iranian nuclear sites at such short notice? What changed between June 20 and June 22, which prompted the US to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities? Why Trump attacked Iran after seeking 'two weeks' to decide? According to a report by India Today, citing high-resolution satellite imagery its Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) obtained from US firm Maxar Technologies, 'unusual ground activities' were allegedly witnessed at the Fordow nuclear enrichment site on June 19 and June 20. A fleet of 16 cargo trucks were positioned along the access road leading to the tunnel entrance of the facility on June 19, while June 20 satellite images showed the trucks had been repositioned approximately one-kilometer northwest along the access road, the report said. More trucks and bulldozers were seen near the entrance of Fordow's main facility in subsequent images, it said. Experts have analyzed satellite imagery from the Fordow nuclear site since Israel attacked it on June, but these reveal no suspicious activity. However, the latest images, the report claims, showed 'unusual' activity on the ground. US bombs Iranian nuclear sites On Sunday morning, US B-2 Stealth bombers dropped GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bunker buster bombs on Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, purportedly destroying the sites. The bunker busters, each weighing about 13,600 kilos, are capable of penetrating up to an estimated 200 feet of reinforced concrete. The US attack came just two days after Donald Trump sought two weeks time to decide whether the US would join Israel in its war against Iran. But analysts believe that US action may have been prompted because Iran was preparing to shift its nuclear assets, including enriched Uranium, to secret locations from its nuclear facilities.

Fact Check: Old videos FALSELY shared to claim UAE sent medical aid to Israel

Did the United Arab Emirates send medical aid to Israel during its ongoing conflict with Iran? This is what is being claimed with a video of an aeroplane landing on a runway and receiving a water-cannon salute. The other half of the video shows the unloading of large cargo shipments with 'UAE AID' written on them. The flags of the UAE and Israel were also visible on the aeroplane. advertisementBelieving the viral claim to be true, many Facebook and X users criticised the UAE by saying that, despite being an Islamic nation, it chose to help Israel, not Iran. One such post said, 'Medical supplies from the UAE arrive for the Israeli gang. Is there a greater disgrace than this?!!! Shame.' Its archive can be viewed here. India Today found that the video is not recent but from 2021, when the UAE state carrier Etihad Airways' first scheduled passenger flight from Abu Dhabi arrived in Israel's Tel Aviv after ties between both countries were PROBE With the help of a keyframe search, we found photos similar to the viral video in news reports from April 2021. As per The Jerusalem Post, Etihad Airways' first-ever scheduled commercial flight to Israel from Abu Dhabi was welcomed in Tel Aviv's Ben-Gurion Airport by a water-cannon salute. Many delegates from both countries boarded the flight along with the CEO of Etihad Airways also published an article on this event, that said 'the launch of scheduled operations comes as the next historic step in developing diplomatic, trade and tourism ties between Israel and the UAE, which were inked as part of the Abraham Accords in September 2020.'We also found that a news outlet called Erem News had shared the viral video on YouTube on April 6, 2021. Notably, however, this video doesn't show the visuals of the cargo being unloaded as seen in the viral video. And that is because this part of the video is from September 2023, when the UAE sent flood relief aid shipments to Benghazi, Libya. The video can be seen in many news reports.# .. # # # (@wamnews) September 13, 2023We also couldn't find any credible news corroborating the viral claim. However, we did find news reports from May 2025 saying that Israel had allowed humanitarian assistance from the UAE into Gaza to feed 15,000 people is thus evident that two unrelated videos were combined to show the UAE providing medical relief to Israel.
