Chandigarh: Ashok Kumar Verma, general manager of Northern Railway, conducted a detailed inspection of Kalka Railway Station on Saturday as part of a two-day review under the Ambala division. The inspection aimed to evaluate passenger amenities, security measures, and ongoing construction work under the Amrit Station Scheme.
The GM also visited the Kalka Narrow Gauge Workshop and assessed various passenger-centric services including drinking water availability, catering stalls, restrooms, toilets, cleanliness, security, and the overall condition of the parking area. With the summer travel rush approaching, he emphasised the need for enhanced preparedness and comfort for passengers.
During his visit, Verma inspected the newly introduced Vistadome coaches operating on the Kalka-Shimla heritage route. He recommended resuming operations of the iconic Rail Motor Car from 8 am to 12 noon and proposed increasing train frequency in the Kalka-Shimla section to accommodate growing tourist and commuter traffic.
Interacting with railway employees, Verma appreciated the progress made so far and urged them to maintain momentum to ensure timely completion of infrastructure upgrades at the station.

Salkhan Fossils Park makes it to UNESCO's tentative list of World Heritage Sites

Set amidst idyllic surroundings, Salkhan Fossils Park in Sonbhadra—one of the oldest fossil sites in the world—has been included in UNESCO's tentative list of World Heritage Sites. Detailed information about the park is now made available on the official UNESCO website. This milestone is expected to significantly boost Uttar Pradesh's global tourism profile. Located near Salkhan village, about 15 km from Robertsganj in Sonbhadra, the park has been the focus of dedicated efforts by the tourism department over the past year. (HT ) Following the chief minister's directives, the Uttar Pradesh eco-tourism development board is preparing a comprehensive dossier to support the park's nomination for UNESCO's permanent World Heritage status, said officials. The dossier will soon be submitted to the government of India and officials are optimistic that the park could attain full World Heritage status within the next two years. Tourism director Prakhar Mishra explained that inclusion in the tentative list is the first step in the UNESCO World Heritage nomination process. This is followed by the submission of a detailed dossier and an on-site evaluation by a UNESCO team—typically a year-long process. Mishra confirmed that the dossier for Salkhan Fossils Park is currently being finalised and will soon be forwarded to UNESCO via the central government. 'This recognition will not only bring international acclaim to Uttar Pradesh but also position the state as a major destination for eco-tourism and scientific research,' he said. Principal secretary of tourism, Mukesh Meshram, highlighted that CM Yogi Adityanath has consistently undertaken key initiatives to promote tourism, especially eco-tourism, across the state. One such recent initiative includes the introduction of Vistadome coaches on tourist trains, connecting Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary and Dudhwa Tiger Reserve with scenic rail routes. Located near Salkhan village, about 15 km from Robertsganj in Sonbhadra, the park has been the focus of dedicated efforts by the tourism department over the past year. A key development in this journey was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on June 26, 2024, between the UP eco-tourism development board and the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences, Lucknow. The institute conducted detailed scientific studies of fossil-bearing rocks in the park. These studies revealed the presence of 1.4 billion-year-old stromatolites and algae fossils—some of the earliest known evidence of life on Earth. This scientific foundation played a critical role in the park's nomination to UNESCO.

The flight, now operating as AI-2111, flew four days a week using an Airbus A-321 aircraft. It used to take off from Pune at 0210 hours (IST) and landed in Singapore at 10.30 hours (GMT). This flight was inaugurated online by former Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. The airline stated that this was part of its overall reduction in narrow-bodied operations by less than 5%. "This voluntary decision leads to the temporary suspension of Air India's services on three routes and a reduction in frequency on 19 routes. The changes are effective until at least July 15. These reductions aim to strengthen Air India's network-wide operational stability and minimise last-minute inconvenience to passengers," an airline press statement said. Other international flights suspended by Air India include a flight between Bengaluru and Singapore. Additionally, a domestic flight between Mumbai and Bagdogra has also been suspended. The frequency of 19 domestic flights, including one between Pune and Delhi, has been reduced. Amitabh Kumar, who was scheduled to fly to Singapore on the flight on Monday, wrote on X, "My Pune–Singapore direct flight on June 23 is cancelled now, and the alternative offered has delayed me by more than 8 hours. The airline informed me just 12 hours prior—no hotel, no care, no compensation," he wrote. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Sushil Arya, who was scheduled to fly on Sunday, said, "They just cancelled the flight a day before. Why has it been cancelled like this a day before?" he asked the airline on X and received the response that the cancellation was for operational reasons. "I have been trying to book the flight for Aug 25, but cannot see the flight. I don't understand whether it will be restored after July 15 or not," another flyer told TOI. The suspension of the flight has left Pune with just four direct international flights, down from five. "The flight was good and gave us the opportunity to travel not just to Singapore, but many other countries in Southeast Asia via Singapore. We hope that the flight is restored," Amol Dayal, a businessman, said.

'This voluntary decision leads to the temporary suspension of Air India's services on three routes and reduction of frequency on 19 routes. The changes are effective until at least July 15, 2025. These reductions are aimed at strengthening Air India's network-wide operational stability and minimising last-minute inconvenience to passengers.
