100 per cent fee waiver for EWS girls: Chandrakant Patil

Hindustan Times7 hours ago

In a move aimed at empowering female students from economically weaker sections, Maharashtra's higher and technical education minister Chandrakant Patil has issued strict directives to ensure 100 per cent tuition and examination fee concession is effectively implemented in all government, aided, partially aided, and permanently unaided colleges and polytechnic institutes, as well as in public and government-affiliated universities across the state.
During a meeting held on Thursday, Patil said all educational institutions must take serious note of these directives.
Patil made it clear that no fees should be collected at the time of admission from eligible female students enrolled in professional courses through the Centralized Admission Process (CAP). Referring to past lapses, Patil warned institutions that if any fees were collected during the previous academic year, they must be refunded immediately.
'The tuition fee scholarship amount under the scheme is directly deposited into the institution's bank account, whereas the examination fee is transferred to the student's Aadhaar-linked bank account, ensuring transparency and timely benefit delivery. To address grievances effectively, the directorate of technical education has set up a dedicated helpline and support desk, with a special nodal officer to be appointed for expediting the resolution of complaints, particularly those related to unauthorised fee collection,' said Patil.
'Under the Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Education Fee Scholarship Scheme, as of June 16, 2025, the technical education department has disbursed a total of ₹784.46 crore directly benefiting 1,03,615 female students. In addition, the higher education department has received 1,32,188 applications, out of which ₹55.83 crore has already been distributed to 61,526 students. The remaining applications are currently undergoing final verification,' said Patil.
The scheme is not limited to diploma-level courses, but also extends to postgraduate professional programs such as MBA, MCA, and M.Pharm, thereby widening the scope of higher education opportunities for girls from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Malaysian court drops money laundering charges against jailed ex-leader Najib Razak

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian court dropped three money laundering charges against jailed former Prime Minister Najib Razak on Friday, in a case linked to the multibillion-dollar looting of a state fund. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Najib was previously convicted in a graft case tied to the 1Malaysia development Berhad state fund, or 1MBD, and began serving time in 2022, after losing his final appeal. He also faces other graft trials. The High Court's decision to drop the charges alleging Najib received 27 million ringgit ($6.3 million) in illegal proceeds to his bank accounts came after procedural delays by the prosecution, which saw the case dragging on for six years, Najib's lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah said. Prosecutors could not give the court a timeline for when they will be ready for the trial, he added. Prosecutors reserve the right to revive charges against Najib and a discharge does not mean an acquittal, Shafee said. But, Najib was happy and can now focus on the main 1MDB trial, he added. Najib set up 1MDB shortly after taking power in 2009. Investigators allege that more than $4.5 billion was stolen from the fund and laundered by his associates to finance Hollywood films and extravagant purchases. The scandal upended Najib's government and he was defeated in the 2018 election. Last November, the High Court also discharged Najib and the former treasury chief in another 1MDB-linked corruption case after repeated delays by the prosecution. The pair can still be charged for the same offence in the future. In 2023, Najib was acquitted on separate charges of tampering with a government audit into 1MDB. Najib was sentenced to 12 years in jail in his first graft trial but the sentence was halved by the pardon boards in 2024. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Najib alleged the board had issued a home arrest order for him to complete his sentence at home, but the case is still being heard in court. Najib awaits his verdict in another key case that ties him directly to the 1MDB scandal, which has prompted investigations in the US and several other countries. The defence in May closed their case on four charges of abuse of power to obtain over $700 million from 1MDB that went into Najib's bank accounts, and 21 counts of money laundering involving the same amount. Closing arguments are scheduled in October, after which the court will set a date for verdict.

Is Israel's Iron Dome Failing Against Iran? What Ex General Told NDTV

New Delhi: Over the last eight days, Israel's much-acclaimed air defence system, the Iron Dome, has been tested like never before against multiple waves of Israeli missiles. As the conflict stretches into its eighth day, questions mount over its performance and whether it can withstand a long conflict. On Thursday, Iran confirmed a new wave of combined missile and drone attacks on military sites in Haifa and Tel Aviv, escalating tensions and prompting fears that Israel's air defences may be cracking under pressure, reported Al Jazeera. On June 19, the strikes, which reportedly hit four locations - including Soroka Hospital in southern Israel - triggered a counterattack. Airstrikes were aimed at what are believed to be Iranian-linked nuclear facilities in Iraq. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was not ruling out a strike on Ayatollah Khamenei, while Defence Minister Israel Katz directly blamed the Iranian Supreme Leader for the attack on the hospital. As footage surfaces showing some missiles slipping past Israeli air defences, speculation has intensified — is the Iron Dome beginning to falter? Speaking to NDTV, retired Brigadier General Amir Avivi, chairman of the Israel Defense and Security Forum (IDSF), insisted that while the system was under strain, it remained largely intact. He said it wasn't just the Iron Dome at work. 'Ballistic missiles — especially those fired from long range — are intercepted mostly by Arrow 3,' he said, referring to Israel's space-based missile defence system, which he claimed has 'more than 90% success.' Still, he cautioned that no system is flawless. 'It's hard to reach 100%,' he said, adding that when a missile does break through, Israel's layered defence kicks in. He also advised civilians to use bunkers in such instances. On whether the Iron Dome was still dependable or if Israel must prepare for a post-Iron Dome future, Avivi maintained that the system, along with the broader air defence network, was reliable. He said the situation was not just about a single system but about a multi-layered strategy to counter a range of threats. Chairman of IDSF (Retd) Amir Avivi speaks to NDTV's Deepti Sachdeva, shares his insights on the ongoing Iran-Israel tensions #NDTVExclusive — NDTV (@ndtv) June 19, 2025 'Israel is managing to systematically destroy the ballistic capabilities of Iran,' he said, pointing out that Iran aimed to launch hundreds of ballistic missiles but failed to maintain that momentum. According to him, Israeli strikes have destroyed more than 40% of Iran's launchers, significantly damaging Tehran's ability to sustain attacks. As Israel's defence systems are being tested by Iranian missile attacks, Avivi seems to suggest that the Iron Dome, though under pressure, can hold the line — at least for now. On Thursday, the White House said that President Donald Trump will make a decision on whether or not the US should get directly involved in the Israel-Iran conflict in the next two days. The negotiations or talks weren't off-table, it added.
