Terror on the tracks
Jaffer Express – which had experienced an agonising hijacking drama in March, resulting in the killing of 64 people including hostages, attackers and hostages – is once again in the news. Yesterday, the passenger train was targeted with a powerful explosive device planted on the railway track. The remotely-detonated device tore through the train on Sindh-Balochistan border near Jacobabad, derailing four bogies. Fortunately, the passenger train escaped what could have been a deadly act of sabotage. That no lives were lost is nothing short of a miracle. This was not a random act of violence. It was an act of terrorism — targeted, deliberate and calculated to create fear and instability. The banned Baloch Republican Guards claimed responsibility in a statement that began circulating on social media within hours, leaving little doubt about the perpetrators or their intentions. More troubling is the growing evidence that such acts are not just rooted in local dissent but are sponsored and supported by their Indian patrons who aim to sow chaos and exploit internal fault lines. The train was en route to Quetta, a route long vulnerable to attacks designed to disrupt Balochistan's linkages with the rest of the country. This is not as an isolated incident, but as part of a broader agenda of asymmetric warfare. The message from the perpetrators is that they intend to keep striking at the heart of Pakistan's national cohesion. Mere condemnations and warnings will not suffice. Intelligence and rapid justice must now become the order of the day. The enemies of Pakistan — foreign and domestic are attempting to derail more than just trains when they target our collective confidence and unity. The response must be equally forceful but rooted in law, powered by will and backed by unambiguous action.

Water, sanitation network expanded to 10 cities
In a move to improve clean drinking water and sewerage services across Punjab, the Housing Department has approved the establishment of 10 new Water and Sanitation Agencies (WASAs) in various cities. These include Hafizabad, Jhang, Sialkot, Jhelum, Rahim Yar Khan, Sahiwal, Okara, Bahawalpur, Sargodha and Dera Ghazi Khan. The relevant authorities have been instructed to appoint managing directors for the newly proposed agencies. The announcement came during an emergency visit by Punjab Secretary for Housing, Urban Development & Public Health Engineering Noorul Amin Mengal to the WASA headquarters in Faisalabad. He chaired a high-level meeting attended by FDA Director General Muhammad Asif Chaudhry, WASA Managing Director Aamir Aziz, DG PHA Dilawar Khan, and other officials, where an extensive review of ongoing development schemes, sewerage improvements, and clean water supply projects was conducted. Mengal emphasised the Punjab chief minister's personal commitment to ensuring the availability of clean drinking water and modern sewerage infrastructure for the public. He said projects worth Rs150 billion are currently being executed under WASA's supervision and assured that their progress and quality will be closely monitored by the department. To ensure transparency and high standards, Quality Assurance Committees are being formed and special monitoring cells will oversee the technical aspects of all ongoing projects. Mengal issued directives to prioritise public convenience during development work by avoiding unnecessary excavations and ensuring prompt restoration of affected areas to minimise disruption to daily life. The housing secretary made it clear that negligence, malpractice, or delays in project execution will not be tolerated and that strict departmental action will be taken against those found responsible.

Conflict with India: Tarar praises Pakistani media's role
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information Ataullah Tarar on Wednesday said that Pakistan has responded to Indian aggression with responsibility and composure, exposing New Delhi's state-sponsored terrorism on multiple international forums with credible evidence, including video proof. Addressing a press conference, Tarar said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly presented Pakistan's stance on the diplomatic front, while Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar led a dedicated team that worked tirelessly in this regard. He credited the Pakistani media, journalists, and anchorpersons for playing a key role in the 'battle of narratives' by presenting facts and demonstrating responsible journalism—unlike Indian media which, he said, resorted to lies and fake news. Tarar revealed that video evidence was shared with the media, showing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing support for the Mukti Bahini in 1971, along with clips of inflammatory speeches by Indian leaders and footage proving Indian involvement in terrorism in Balochistan. He emphasised that India is involved in terrorism not only in Pakistan but also in countries like Canada, the United States, and Australia. 'India's state policy revolves around exporting terror,' Tarar alleged, citing the example of Indian Navy officer Kulbhushan Jadhav who was caught operating in Balochistan. He added that Indian-sponsored terrorism has targeted even innocent children, referencing the recent Khuzdar incident, and accused Indian media of celebrating the Jaffer Express tragedy while glorifying terrorists. 'Pakistan's armed forces are fully committed to eliminating all forms of terrorism,' Tarar stated, reiterating that 'Fitna-e-Hindustan' (India's disruptive elements) will be rooted out of Balochistan at all costs. He also welcomed Pakistan's offer for transparent international investigations into the Pahalgam attack, showcasing Islamabad's commitment to justice. 'Like conventional wars, India's proxies will also be defeated,' Tarar concluded, affirming national unity and resilience. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
