About condo reform
A key senator on Tuesday signaled a willingness to make further changes to safety laws that require inspections of older condominium buildings and adequate reserves for repairs, saying more urgent structural needs should be prioritized.
Senate Regulated Industries Chairwoman Jennifer Bradley, R-Fleming Island, also indicated that lawmakers need to "clarify" some requirements included in measures passed after the 2021 collapse of the Champlain Towers South building in Surfside that killed 98 people.
A panel of experts — including engineers, accountants and attorneys — gave the Regulated Industries Committee an update on how the laws requiring inspections and adequate reserves have affected the condo industry
Bradley said she wanted to help "smooth the transition" for condominium associations to come into compliance with the laws, which many residents say are causing soaring costs.
"We're here to find solutions. The condo market will be stronger. Floridians will be safer," she said.
About the Tristin Murphy Act
On Friday evening, April 15, 2025, the Florida Legislature formally passed the Tristin Murphy Act, the most comprehensive reform to mental health inside the criminal justice system in decades.
Murphy, a 37-year-old schizophrenic, had been in and out of jail for years because of his mental illness, without ever receiving the treatment or long-term care he needed. Murphy's final arrest came when he allowed his pickup truck to roll into a pond near the Charlotte County Jail. Prosecutors charged him with littering, and because of the weight of the truck, it was deemed a third-degree felony. Arguing he had no other recourse, a judge sentenced him to three years in prison.
On September 16, 2021, a month after arriving at the South Florida prison to begin serving his sentence, Murphy killed himself at the facility with a chainsaw.
Murphy's story was chronicled in the 2023 CBS Miami documentary, "Warehoused: The Life and Death of Tristin Murphy."

When will we know the NYC mayoral primary election winner?
New York City voters are casting their ballots in the primary election for a Democratic mayoral nominee, and many are wondering when we will know who won -- and how ranked choice voting will impact the results, and their timing. Early voting wraps up this weekend, and Election Day is next Tuesday, June 24. Are we going to get results on primary night? We will see unofficial first choice results after polls close at 9 p.m., but that's not the end of the story, considering ranked choice voting. Those unofficial first choice results will include those marked as first choice from early voting, Election Day, and valid mail-in ballots. If, however, no candidate goes over 50% of the vote - and considering the large number of candidates running in this race, that seems very likely - we will then move into ranked choice elimination rounds. Under the system, the candidate who got the fewest first-round votes will then be eliminated, and voters who ranked that candidate first on their ballots will then have their second choice candidate counted. That process will then repeat until one candidate exceeds 50% of the vote. So when will we get a clear picture of the winner? We will likely start to get a clearer picture of the winner before official results are certified. Preliminary, non-certified results will come out a week after the election. We can then expect weekly reports, as elimination rounds are conducted. The entire process could take up to several weeks. In the last mayoral primary -- the first citywide election with ranked choice voting -- the final results were certified nearly a month after the election.. At a certain point, a presumed winner may start to emerge. For example, if a candidate is approaching 50% of the vote, and the gap between that candidate's unofficial numbers and their nearest competitor is greater than the number of ballots still needing to be counted, then that person will almost certainly become the winner. The final, certified results still won't come out until all ballots are counted, including early voting, mail-in, absentee, military, affidavit and emergency ballots.

Pilot killed in small plane crash in North Carolina raised a wheel to avoid a turtle, NTSB says
MOCKSVILLE, N.C. — The pilot of a small plane that crashed near a North Carolina airport this month had raised a wheel after landing to avoid hitting a turtle on the runway, according to a National Transportation Safety Board preliminary report. The pilot of the Universal Stinson 108 and a passenger were killed in the June 3 crash near Sugar Valley Airport in Mocksville, officials said. A second passenger was seriously injured in the crash.

Motorcyclist dies after crashing into SUV in Naperville, Illinois, police say
A motorcyclist was killed after colliding with a sports utility vehicle Thursday night in Naperville, Illinois. Naperville police said officers and fire crews responded to the intersection of Chicago Avenue and Naper Boulevard just after 9:30 p.m. for a crash with injuries. Officers found a blue 2024 Suzuki motorcycle involved in a crash with a grey 2024 VinFast SUV. Despite lifesaving measures, the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Police identified him as 26-year-old Dante Fields of Woodridge. Preliminary reports indicated the Suzuki was heading eastbound on Chicago Avenue at a high rate of speed when it entered the intersection at Naper Boulevard on a solid green light. The SUV was turning left from westbound Maple Avenue to southbound Naper Boulevard, at which time the Suzuki struck the passenger side of the SUV. Police said no charges were filed. Investigation into the crash remains ongoing by the Naperville Police Department. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Naperville Police Department's Traffic Unit at 630-420-8833.
