Dodgers' Dave Roberts Offers Take on Shohei Ohtani, Basketball

Dodgers' Dave Roberts Offers Take on Shohei Ohtani, Basketball originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani is renowned for his versatility on the diamond, as he is among the sport's elites at the plate and on the mound. Advertisement Ohtani was given the opportunity to flex his two-way player status against the San Diego Padres on Monday, when he returned to the mound for the first time since 2023. He threw just 28 pitches (16 of which were strikes) in the one-inning outing, allowing two hits and one earned run. That game came just two days before another major piece of sports news in Los Angeles dropped – the Buss family reportedly sold its majority stake in the Los Angeles Lakers to American businessman Mark Walter for $10 billion, the largest such deal for a professional sports franchise. Walter also happens to be the Dodgers' primary owner and chairman; now, the chief executive officer of Guggenheim Partners has another valuable asset in his portfolio of investments. Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (17) looks on in the dugout before the game against the San Francisco Giants at Dodger Navarro-Imagn Images With the Dodgers and Lakers seemingly having a closer relationship than ever before, reporters told Dave Roberts on Wednesday that social media users were starting to edit Ohtani's face onto Lakers jerseys. Roberts jokingly shared a message to basketball fans about his star player's status. Advertisement "That's my message: hands off of Shohei. They got enough superstars wearing the purple and gold," Roberts said with a laugh on Wednesday. "Yeah, leave him alone." Ohtani has a personal connection to the Lakers, having attended many of their games and hailing from the same country as one of their players, Rui Hachimura. The two have met on multiple occasions, and Hachimura even got to show Ohtani his baseball skills when he threw the first pitch at a Dodgers game last August. Roberts made it clear, though, that both Ohtani and Hachimura are perfectly fine where they are in their respective sports. "I think Hachimura's taking care of the job he's been assigned," Roberts said. "He's got that, and we'll have Shohei on the baseball side." Advertisement Ohtani is in the midst of another strong campaign at the plate, hitting .292 with 25 home runs, 43 RBIs, a major league-leading 73 runs scored and a 1.013 OPS. Lakers Predicted to Land $45 Million Big Man

Lakers Predicted to Land $45 Million Big Man originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Lakers are in the market for an upgrade at center as the franchise aims to to solidify their frontcourt depth around LeBron James and Luka Doncic. Bleacher Report's Eric Pincus predicts an interesting name will be headed to Hollywood. Advertisement The Lakers have been linked to a bevy of big men in ongoing NBA rumors ahead of free agency. With the Atlanta Hawks benching Clint Capela in favor of Onyeka Okongwu, the veteran appears primed for a change of scenery. "Capela, 31, has probably aged out of his stay in Atlanta. Onyeka Okongwu and others will fill that spot, leaving the veteran rebounder and shot-blocker to find a new home." Pincus wrote on Wednesday. "He should expect a decrease in pay, but he may be one of the top available bigs on the market. He's not much of a scorer, and his efficiency at the rim has dropped from 65.3 percent from the field in 2022-3 to 55.9 percent," Pincus added. "Still, he might provide a team with double-double production as a 24-minute starter, sharing minutes on a playoff-capable team," he added. Los Angeles Lakers head coach J.J. They've earmarked the taxpayer mid-level exception (~$5.7 million) and have more than $70 million tied up in expiring contracts and locked-in stars like James ($52.6 million) and Doncic ($46.0 million). Advertisement Capela was on a two-year, $45 million contract with the Hawks but will now be a free agent. Pincus predicts the Lakers can land Capela on the $5.7 million taxpayer mid-level exception, a bargain compared to his previous deal. The big man would immediately address Los Angeles' lack of interior defense and rebounding. During his five seasons in Atlanta, Capela averaged 11.8 points, 7.3 rebounds and one block per game. In particular, Capela thrived in pick-and-roll situations alongside Trae Young. Related: Stephen A. Fabrizio Romano confirms Serie A club Como 'have tried to sign' Man United's Antony 'in recent days'

Serie A outfit Serie A have made an attempt to sign Manchester United winger Antony over the past few days, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed. Antony failed to live up to the massive £86m fee United forked out to secure his services from Ajax in the summer of 2022. Advertisement He registered only 12 goals and five assists in 96 appearances for the Red Devils, but a short loan stint with Real Betis in Spain seems to have reignited his form. Antony enjoyed a dramatic improvement in fortunes under Manuel Pellegrini, notching 14 goals contributions in 26 appearances – just five shy of his entire United tally in nearly a quarter of the time. The Brazilian has made no secret of his desire to continue with Betis, who are also working to try and agree a deal with United. Such is Antony's eagerness to return to Seville that he is reportedly willing to accept a 30% pay cut to make the move happen. Advertisement But Los Verdiblancos are not the only club eyeing Antony. He has also been linked to Juventus, Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid. A report covered by The Peoples Person earlier this week relayed that Antony is also of interest to Premier League teams, with Brentford and Aston Villa having enquired about the conditions of a transfer. But, they were told that his top priority is Betis. Now, Romano has revealed that a new club has entered the fray for the 25-year-old, Como. Romano wrote on X, 'Italian side Como have tried to sign Antony in the recent days but Brazilian winger is giving priority to Real Betis return.' Advertisement 'Man United are also aware of Antony's preference to continue at Betis next season, no club to club agreement yet.' If United are unable to strike a compromise with Betis, then the Red Devils can rest assured that there will be no shortage of suitors for the forward. Antony is not thought to have a future at Old Trafford. There have even been suggestions that Ruben Amorim will not include him in the club's pre-season squad.
