From Cartons to Community Parks: Mumbai Launches Citywide Recycling Relay on World Environment Day

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 5: To mark World Environment Day, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Rotary Club of Bombay Mid City, and Tetra Pak India have joined forces to launch a citywide sustainability campaign--the Carton Recycling Relay--designed to turn used beverage cartons into durable benches for Mumbai's public parks.
In its first phase, the initiative aims to collect 2.5 lakh used cartons from across the city, which will be recycled into 25 garden benches to be installed in selected public parks. This collaborative effort brings to life the principles of recycling, circular economy, and community participation, with citizens at the heart of the transformation.
"This is a brilliant example of how partnerships can bring sustainability into public spaces, and how the public can actively participate in this transformation," said Jeetendra V. Pardeshi, Superintendent of the Gardens and Tree Office, BMC. "We're not just recycling--we're creating something useful and lasting for the community. This initiative represents the kind of smart, sustainable thinking our city needs."
To kick off the campaign, a set of benches made entirely from recycled cartons were donated to Patwardhan Park, Bandra, a popular green space in Mumbai. The event was attended by Mr. Dinesh Pallewad, Assistant Commissioner, Ms. Swapna Mhatre, Ex Corporator, Mr. Dnyandev Mundhe, Dy. Supdt. of Gardens Zone 3, Mr. Kamlesh Kholiya, Sustainability Manager, Tetra Pak South Asia; Ajay Mishra, Rotary President; and Ms Monisha Narke, Founder, RUR Greenlife.
"At Tetra Pak, we believe that sustainability is a shared responsibility," added Kamlesh Kholiya, Sustainability Manager, Tetra Pak South Asia. "The Carton Recycling Relay turns citizens into changemakers. By transforming used cartons into public assets, we're fostering circularity and strengthening community engagement."
A life-size, carton-shaped collection bin will now travel across prominent locations in the city, encouraging schools, housing societies, businesses, and individuals to deposit their used beverage cartons. More than 50 drop-off points are already available across Reliance Retail and Shakari Bhandar stores across Mumbai up to make participation easy and accessible for all.
Over the next few weeks, the relay will travel across key Mumbai locations, mobilizing schools, RWAs, and workplaces. As the city works toward the 2.5 lakh carton target, 22 more benches will be created and donated--transforming waste into symbols of community action and environmental stewardship.
"Sustainability is one of the 7 pillars of Rotary thrust area and always work around related to protection of environment. We are working with MCGM and corporate to set up street furniture made from recycled waste for awareness since long time. We are happy to see that Tetra Pak came forward to support the cause and create awareness. We are glad to work as bridges between benefactor and donor," added Ajay Mishra, President, Rotary.
The initiative is being implemented on-ground by RUR Greenlife, a long-standing Tetra Pak partner known for its work in waste management and citizen-led recycling. Media outreach is being supported by Free Press Journal.
This campaign is part of a program called 'Go Green with Tetra Pak' launched in 2010 by Tetra Pak, in collaboration with Reliance Retail and RUR Greenlife. The program encourages Mumbaikars to drop off their used beverage cartons at over 60 Reliance Smart and Sahakari Bhandar outlets, and over 100 other drop-off points across Mumbai. These cartons are then recycled into useful items like desks & garden benches and donated back to the society. Tetra Pak cartons are paper-based, recyclable, and increasingly being recycled through a robust ecosystem nurtured by Tetra Pak over the last 20 years, working closely with various stakeholders such as urban local governments, NGOs, brand owners, academia, and consumers.

Rotarian's effort brings hope in 14 tribal families in Kodaikanal
For Mallika, born in a Tribal family, she lived in a 'home' all these years covering the roof with a plastic sheet and four bamboo sticks acted as the 'pillars'. Today, June 22 is an unforgettable day for her as she has got a home, in the true sense - a concrete roof with a carpet area measuring 150 square feet consisting of a hall and an attached bathroom with electricity. Each unit cost Rs 5 lakh and the total project stood at ₹70 lakh. Mallika is not the lone beneficiary. Thirteen others too are lucky to have their own homes in their names. How it all happened About a few years ago, Rajkumar Raman, a Rotarian living in Kodaikanal got a spark to help these families after visiting the tribal habitation at Valaigiri, 30 km away from upper Kodaikanal. Living in extreme conditions under the plastic sheet with total exposure to the eco-system and frequent threats from wild animals, he explored the modalities since then. Contacting his friends and philanthropists, Mr Rajkumar, chairman of the 'Rama Vanam' - Rotary Model Tribal Village project - shared about his plans to build 14 concrete homes. As the response was positive and encouraging, he ventured upon the 'dream' project in June 2022 with a 'bhoomi puja'. Sharing his experience, he said it all started over a chance conversation with a past District Governor Jawaharilal Jain, which was the spark and opened his eyes to the struggles of the nomadic tribes. 'The living conditions were quite challenging for these tribal people. They lived in fragile, makeshift tents or under plastic sheets supported by wooden logs — without proper walls, doors, or safety, which they had to share with cattle. Many elderly persons, women, and children were compelled to endure the winters in these temporary shelters which provided little to no protection from the severe cold due to the region's high altitude. The harsh reality of men sleeping on rocks outdoors and women huddled in makeshift tents highlighted the urgent need for safe and dignified housing...' he added. The 14 families lived in a small space in Valaigiri and when Mr Rajkumar approached a landlord in the vicinity, he readily agreed to part with two cents of land each to the 14 tribal families out of his 30 acres of land. Once, he got it materialised, the then Revenue Divisional Officer S. Murugesan was instrumental in getting the documents finalised directly in the name of the 14 beneficiaries. Rotary District Governor R. Raja Govindasamy, who was the chief guest, handed over the keys to the beneficiaries at a function organised on Sunday. He lauded the role played by Mr. Rajkumar as a milestone achievement by a Rotarian. ' A first of its kind being done by an individual needs to be appreciated as it would motivate several others to follow Mr Rajkumar...' he added. Offering felicitation, Sundaram Home Finance MD Lakshminarayanan said that after having seen the dwellings of the tribal people earlier in Valaigiri, the initiative by Mr. Rajkumar has given a new meaning to the beneficiaries, who would really live in their homes. Sharing similar thoughts, K.S. Nagaraj Setty from Mumbai, who contributed for the project, said that he would be eager to help the children here for their higher education as well. Motivational speaker and former SP Kaliamoorthy inspired the members with his splendid talk on the need for philanthropy. Mumbai Water Alert: Andheri, Vile Parle Residents To Be Impacted From Tomorrow Till...
The BMC announced that the Metro-7A construction work will affect water supply in parts of K-ward from tomorrow till next weekend. Residents in parts of Mumbai's Vile Parle (East) and areas between Andheri station and the Western Express Highway are set to face low water pressure for a week. The affected localities include Old Nagardas Marg, New Nagardas Marg, Mograpada, and Andheri-Kurla Marg, with the disruption scheduled from Sunday, June 22, to Saturday, June 28. The week-long issue is linked to ongoing maintenance work and may impact daily routines in these neighbourhoods. On June 20, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued an advisory about a temporary disruption in water supply. Parts of the K-East Ward will be affected over the coming week due to ongoing construction work for the Metro-7A project. As a result, residents in the affected areas can expect low water pressure during this period. In its advisory, the civic body has advised citizens to store adequate water in advance and to use it sparingly to avoid inconvenience. The BMC, in a statement quoted by Mid-Day, explained that the ongoing work is part of the Mumbai Metro-7A project. The BMC clarified that the ongoing low water pressure in parts of K-East Ward is due to excavation work under the Metro-7A project. As per the statement, a tunnel-boring machine will dig beneath an active 1,800 mm water canal near Bamanwada, Andheri (East). 'Under the Mumbai Metro-7A project, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority will be excavating under the operational 1,800-mm diameter corporation canal of Veravali reservoir (24×7), near Bamanwada in Andheri (East), in the K-East Ward through a tunnel-boring machine," BMC said in a statement as quoted by Mid-Day. – In Vile Parle (East), residents will experience low water pressure between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM daily throughout the affected week. – Meanwhile, areas such as Old Nagardas Marg, New Nagardas Marg, Mograpada, and Andheri-Kurla Marg—specifically the stretch from Andheri Station to the Western Express Highway—will receive water at low pressure between 8:00 PM and 9:30 PM. Residents in these zones are advised to plan their water usage accordingly and store water in advance to avoid disruptions to daily routines. First Published:
