Enzo Fernandez sent off for horrifying head stamp but it's good news for Chelsea

Daily Mirror11-06-2025

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has endured a shocking international fortnight but his Argentina woes might actually prove to be a positive for the Blues heading into next season
Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez is facing an international ban after being sent off for brutally kicking an opponent in the HEAD. The midfielder started in Argentina's World Cup qualifying match against Colombia on Tuesday but lasted just 70 minutes before getting dismissed.
Fernandez raised his boot too high as he attempted to challenge Kevin Castano and made contact with his opponent's face. The shocking challenge immediately drew blood, with Castano needing medical treatment.

And the referee barely hesitated as he brandished a straight red card to the Chelsea man, just the second dismissal of his entire career. Fernandez, 24, will now likely face a three-match ban on the international stage.

He had only just returned from a suspension having missed the first game of the international break against Peru. And while Fernandez will be disappointed to miss the next fixtures in September, his absence might actually be good news for Chelsea.
Fernandez faces a hectic few months on the club front. He is set to be named in the Blues' squad for the upcoming Club World Cup in the USA. Should Enzo Maresca's side go all the way, Fernandez could potentially be in action all the way up until July 13.
Fernandez will then face a short break before the 2025/26 Premier League season gets underway just over a month later on August 16, with pre-season also set to take place before then.
His ban over the September internationals gives the midfielder a chance for a well-earned break. Ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has previously suggested that the Blues could be on the back foot next season due to their participation in the Club World Cup.
He said: 'I think it will have a huge impact and it will give Liverpool and Arsenal a huge advantage in the next season to not be there. I think it will be a very nice experience for the players who are there to play this tournament for the first time so there are mixed feelings about it.
'I decided not to worry too much because why should I? It is a given and no one knows what will be the outcome of it or the effect. We will deal with the effect when the effect comes and let's see. We have a lot of teams in the Champions League next season and European football and let's see.'

Fernandez's red card was not the end of the drama in Argentina's clash with Colombia. Liverpool star Luis Diaz had given his side the lead with a brilliant solo effort ahead of Fernandez's dismissal.
Lionel Messi was then surprisingly substituted at his own request only for Thiago Almada to equalise with a precise finish for the reigning world champions.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca refused to be drawn on Nicolas Jackson's red card

Jackson, who was sent off against Newcastle in their third-last Premier League match, raked his studs down the shin of Lucas Ayrton and was immediately dismissed – after which Wallace Yan scored the Brazil side's third. When Maresca was asked about Jackson's challenge and his recent indiscipline he told DAZN: 'It was a red card, so nothing to say.' 68' You can't script Jackson subbed on… and sent off 4 minutes later 🟥😱 Watch the @FIFACWC | June 14 – July 13 | Every Game | Free | | #FIFACWC #TakeItToTheWorld #FLACHE — DAZN Football (@DAZNFootball) June 20, 2025 However, Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella admitted it was something the 24-year-old had to improve. 'He is young player, he has a lot of quality, he maybe needs to improve this a little bit. We are here to improve, we are not perfect so it is part of the game,' he said. Maresca put the damaging defeat down to 'trying something new' for next season. The Blues were leading through Pedro Neto's 13th-minute strike but after second-half goals from Bruno Henrique and Danilo in quick succession Jackson saw red. 'It completely changed the game. Unfortunately we conceded two goals in a short moment and then the red card and then I think it is complicated to get back into the game,' the Chelsea boss added. 65' ABSOLUTE SCENES: Danilo scores and @Flamengo_en complete their comeback under just 3 minutes 😱 Watch the @FIFACWC | June 14 – July 13 | Every Game | Free | | #FIFACWC #TakeItToTheWorld #FLACHE — DAZN Football (@DAZNFootball) June 20, 2025 'We tried – but congratulations to them. Gareth Bale consortium in bid to buy Cardiff

The 35-year-old former Real Madrid and Wales forward was understood to be part of a consortium that had conversations regarding a takeover of Plymouth earlier this week, along with several other clubs, but it appears they have now turned their attention to south Wales. The Athletic reports that the consortium sent current Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan a letter of intent last month, which included financial figures, but it was rejected. Bale is seeking to be the latest big sporting name to be associated with an EFL club. A general view of Cardiff City Stadium (Nigel French/PA) His former Real team-mate Luka Modric became an investor in and co-owner of Championship side Swansea in April, while ex-NFL quarterback Tom Brady has a minority stake in Birmingham. Cardiff declined to comment on Friday night. Bale retired from football in January 2023 at the age of 33. He won five Champions League titles with Real and is the men's all-time record goalscorer for Wales with 41 in 111 caps. He was linked with an emotional move to Cardiff, his hometown club, after leaving Madrid in 2022 but instead joined MLS side LAFC. Bale featured for Wales at the 2022 World Cup – their first appearance at the global finals since 1958 – and at the Euros in 2016 and 2020. Cardiff were relegated to League One last season and appointed Brian Barry-Murphy as their new manager this week.

Marc Guehi's comments on Liverpool and 'very intelligent player' speaks volumes

Marc Guehi has been selected as Liverpool's next signing once Jarell Quansah departs for Bayer Leverkusen and it appears that the Crystal Palace star is already a big fan of some of his potential teammates Marc Guehi has hailed Liverpool 's 'fantastic players' including Mohamed Salah ahead of a potential move to Anfield. The Crystal Palace captain has been identified as the Reds' next summer signing once they get deals for Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez over the line. Guehi has been identified as a replacement for academy graduate Jarell Quansah, with the defender set to sign for Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool have been keeping tabs on the England defender, with his Crystal Palace deal due to expire in 12 months' time. ‌ And while there appears to be some work left to do to get a deal thrashed out, Guehi has already made his feelings very clear on Liverpool. Speaking ahead of taking on the Merseysiders back in 2023, he said: "I don't think there's any good time to play Liverpool, really. Everyone knows how strong they are as a team, they've got some fantastic players." ‌ Having hailed Liverpool in general, Guehi also had special praise for one of his potential future teammates way back in 2021. After Palace had fallen to a 3-0 defeat at Anfield - a game in which Salah scored - the defender praised the Egyptian forward. He said: 'He's so quick. Very quick, a very intelligent player. The way they play is very direct, they like to get the ball forward to their front players as quick as possible.' Liverpool could potentially face competition for Guehi as they attempt to seal his services. Newcastle are also long-term admirers of the former Chelsea defender having had a clutch of bids rejected for his services - the highest of which was around the £65m mark. Palace originally signed him from Chelsea for around £18m in 2021 and he has gone on to make 155 appearances for the Selhurst Park side and helped them to win the FA Cup last season. Despite being keen on keeping him around, it already appears that the Eagles have already started their succession planning. They are keen on a deal for Sporting Lisbon defender Ousmane Diomande as a potential replacement. Guehi's arrival at Anfield would round off what has been an expensive summer so far for Liverpool. ‌ They have already added Jeremie Frimpong to their squad for £35m, while the £100m-plus signing of Florian Wirtz is expected to go through imminently. Liverpool are also expected to sign Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez for around £45m. Goalkeepers Armin Pecsi and Giorgi Mamardashvilli have also finalised moves to Anfield this summer. Outgoings have been on the agenda for Reds chiefs too. Caoimhin Kelleher was sold to Brentford, while Liverpool also earned a considerable fee for Trent Alexander-Arnold despite the defender being at the end of his deal. Quansah is also expected to fetch around £34m. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
