Jalen Brunson is rarely the fastest player on the court. He's often the shortest. He won't even lift for a mundane dunk — as The Athletic's Mike Vorkunov noted, Brunson's slam in Sunday's Game 3 was his first of the entire season.

Yet Brunson is also the reigning NBA Clutch Player of the Year and one of the most unstoppable one-on-one players in the game. So how does he do it? How does he create so much space even with five defenders constantly locked onto him, and especially in the most vital moments?

Brunson's best skill is his ability to slow down quickly. It's how he kills mismatches, especially in fourth quarters.
Anyone is susceptible to his herky-jerky twitches. Just ask Ausar Thompson, who learned the lesson during the Knicks' first-round series win over the Detroit Pistons. The 22-year-old Thompson is up there with his twin brother Amen on the list of the NBA's most athletic players. He has six inches on Brunson, plus an eight-inch wingspan advantage. The Pistons wanted him on Brunson whenever possible during the series.
But in Game 6, with the score tied in the closing seconds and the Knicks leading the series 3-2, none of that mattered. Brunson didn't try to drive by Thompson. Instead, the Knicks' guard stopped on a dime when crossing over, to the point that Thompson slid so far in the other direction that he was out of the baseline camera's frame. Brunson walked into a wide-open shot. Game, and series.

'My entire growing up — I say this to her all the time now — [but] she was so almond mom,' Weslie, 17, said on the Sunday, June 22, episode of their 'Between Us' podcast. 'She was like, 'You have to eat greens [and have] chicken every night.'' While Holker, 37, was unsure about the origins of the slang term 'almond mom,' she does concur that she acted that way when it came to food. 'I definitely was one with Weslie. I was very strict,' Holker said. 'I was cooking all of the time, and her lunches for school were all the organic versions of everything. Like, there were no processed snacks. Everything was, like, different types of nuts [and] I had a lot of dried fruit options.' NBA Finals Game 7: LeBron James, others react after Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton's early Achilles injury
Tyrese Haliburton's right leg gave out just minutes into Game 7 on Sunday night, and he had to be helped off the floor. () The NBA world was thrilled to get a rare Game 7 in the NBA Finals. But just minutes into that contest between the Indiana Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday night, everything shifted. Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton went crashing down to the court during the first quarter, appearing to re-injure his strained right calf during a non-contact moment. He immediately started pounding the floor at the Paycom Center, too, and was extremely emotional as play went the other way. The Pacers quickly ruled him out just a few minutes later with what they called a right "lower leg injury." Further specifics are not known, though Haliburton's father confirmed to ESPN that it is an Achilles injury. Advertisement Almost immediately, players from across the league chimed in on social media. Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James shared what most of basketball fans were feeling in a very not-safe-for-work way. He was far from alone. Even Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes chimed in. Haliburton first went down with the calf injury during Game 5 of the series, though he returned to the court for the Pacers' Game 6 win on Thursday. He had 14 points and five assists in that 108-91 win, which forced Sunday's Game 7. Haliburton was off to a great start on Sunday night, too. He had nine points and went 3-of-4 from the 3-point line before he went down to keep the Pacers in the mix early. Advertisement The Pacers are playing in the NBA Finals for the first time since 2000. The franchise, though they have three ABA titles from before the merger, has never won a league title. While Haliburton's injury doesn't end that quest completely, it does make it that much harder.
