PETALING JAYA : A 47-year-old widower has been sentenced to two years in jail and two strokes of the rotan for inviting his teenage daughter to engage in sexual acts.
The self-employed man pleaded guilty after the charge was read before Muar sessions court judge Sayani Nor, Harian Metro reported.
He was charged with sexually communicating with his 14-year-old daughter, his only child, at a house in Batu Pahat, Johor, at around 4pm on June 16.
The charge was framed under Section 11(1)(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, punishable by a maximum three years in jail upon conviction.
The charge was also read with Section 16 of the same Act, which provided for an additional sentence of up to five years and two strokes of the rotan due to the relationship of trust between him and the victim.
Deputy public prosecutor Diyana Najihah Fauzi prosecuted while the man was unrepresented.
According to the case facts, the victim contacted her aunt earlier this month to express fears that her father might act inappropriately towards her.
On the day of the incident, the girl had rejected her father's advances and left his bedroom. The aunt then asked one of her children to pick the girl up from the house.

BUTTERWORTH, June 20 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is finalising the investigation papers for action to be taken in court against the bus company operator involved in the accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students Its director-general, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the investigation is now in the final stages before being handed over to the Deputy Public Prosecutor to decide on the charge recommendation. 'He (the bus operator) had a heart attack, it has nothing to do with the JPJ and I have not received any reports saying otherwise. We will still take action; if he goes to the hospital we will wait,' he added. In the incident on June 9, 15 UPSI students died when the bus they were in overturned in an accident at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB), near Tasik Banding, Gerik. The bus carrying 42 university students was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak when it collided with a Perodua Alza before overturning. — Bernama

SHAH ALAM, June 20 — A man was found dead inside a vehicle, believed to have been shot, in an incident outside a motorcycle shop in Meru, Klang, this afternoon. According to Bernama, Klang North district police chief ACP S Vijaya Rao said the authorities were alerted to the incident at 3.37pm, and when they arrived at the scene, they found the body of a 46-year-old local man in the driver's seat. PETALING JAYA : A Masterchef Malaysia finalist and her former husband have been sentenced to 34 years in jail after they were found guilty by the Kota Kinabalu High Court of killing their domestic worker in 2021. Etiqah Siti Noorashikeen Sulang's former husband, Ambree Yunos, was also sentenced to 12 strokes of the rotan while she was exempted because of her gender, Sabah Media reported. Lim said the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt against the prosecution's case. He said the prosecution had proven three key elements – that the victim died from her injuries, that the injuries were caused by the two accused with intent, and that the pair had acted with a common intention. During sentencing, deputy public prosecutor Dacia Jane Romanus sought the death sentence, saying the case had shocked both Sabah and the nation, and that it warranted the heaviest penalty possible. Dacia said the deceased was a young woman who had left her hometown for honest work amid the pandemic, but ended up losing her life at her workplace. She said the victim suffered daily and was denied her basic human rights. Ambree and Etiqah, who were represented by lawyers Ram Singh and Rakhbir Singh, were previously out on bail.
