Raducanu to return to British No. 1 as Boulter exits Queen's

Emma Raducanu will become British number one on Monday after Katie Boulter bowed out at Queen's with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 second-round defeat to Russian fifth-seed Diana Shnaider at the Queen's Club tournament on Thursday.
Boulter, who replaced 2021 US Open winner Raducanu in the top spot exactly two years ago, looked sharp in her first set, saving two break points, breaking the Russian's serve twice, and hitting 10 winners.
The first-serve issues that had plagued Boulter in her gritty three-set victory over Australian qualifier Ajla Tomljanovic on Monday also looked to have largely been resolved after she landed close to 75% in the opening set.
But they returned at the start of Boulter's first service game in the second, when she twice double-faulted to allow Shnaider to find her way back from 40-0 down and break the Briton's serve, and did so again after a 15-minute rain delay in the sixth game to take a 5-1 advantage.
Boulter broke straight back and saved a set point to hold the next game, but could not claw her way to a comeback as Shnaider forced the deciding set.
It began with another Boulter double-fault, but the Briton was able to claw her way back from 40-0 down to hold.
Two more double-faults in the third game - Boulter ultimately tallied a total of nine in the match - opened the door for Shnaider to break Boulter's serve, doing so again in the seventh to set herself up to serve for the set and seal her place in the quarter-finals.
Shnaider begged the British crowd for forgiveness after knocking out the home favourite at the Andy Murray Arena.
'I definitely want to first apologise to the crowd,' the 21-year-old said on court.

City's Stones reflects on ‘dark days' during recent injury setbacks

PA Media/dpa Atlanta, Georgia Manchester City's John Stones admits there were times he doubted if his career would resume amid a series of injury problems over the past two years. The England centre back made only six Premier League starts in the 2024-25 season after thigh, foot and other undisclosed issues. That came after he also missed two months at the start of the previous campaign with a hip injury. These setbacks have prevented the 31-year-old building on what was an outstanding season in 2022-23 when, playing a hybrid defence-midfield role, he helped City win the treble. Stones said: 'Yes, there have been points where you think: you've been giving all this effort, you dedicate all your life, especially how I approach or go about my life and football, I give everything on and off the pitch to be here or be ready to play games and ... those are the dark days. 'I think everyone's been through them and thinks, 'Why is this happening?' You wish it would go a different path. It's self-doubt, a lot of things. 'It is frustrating for me. I put a lot of pressure on myself. I find it very challenging mentally. 'I have had some very low points in the past season. I just have to (try to) come back but, once you come over those things, you can't really see the end of the tunnel when they keep happening.' Stones has now battled his way back to fitness and is hoping to play a big part in City's challenge at the Club World Cup in the United States. He has not featured since February when he was forced off after just eight minutes against Real Madrid. He was an unused substitute in their opening game of the tournament against Wydad Casablanca on Wednesday. Speaking to media ahead of their second game against Al Ain of Abu Dhabi in Atlanta, Stones said he was 'raring' to go. He said: 'I feel great, I'm back fit and ready to help the team when called upon. I'm excited to get going. 'Mentally it's been difficult dealing with the injuries and the process, but now I've put that behind me. 'I've been back in training a few weeks now and that's been going great. I'm super excited.' Manager Pep Guardiola is pleased to have Stones back in contention but will ease him back into action. Guardiola said: 'Him playing football, I want that. We have been together for almost one decade and he's an incredible human being. 'But the important thing now is at training sessions, he feels better. Games are another issue, another rhythm.'

Alcaraz reveals top form as he regains Queen's crown

PA Media/DPA London Carlos Alcaraz looks in top form for Wimbledon after regaining his crown as the King of Queen's by beating Jiri Lehecka in an absorbing final on Sunday. The Spanish top seed replicated his debut triumph on the grass courts of west London in 2023 with a 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2 victory. It was an 18th-straight win for Alcaraz - in his fifth consecutive final - following his title successes in Rome and at the French Open. World number 30 Lehecka had knocked out home hope Jack Draper on Saturday to become the first Czech finalist since Ivan Lendl won the Queen's title in 1990. The 23-year-old played his part in a high-quality final with some huge serves and powerful groundstrokes, forcing the match to a decider via a tie-break. But Alcaraz, the defending Wimbledon champion, did not face a single break point and slammed down 18 aces on his way to a 21st career title. In a way, proving he will be the man to beat at the grass Wimbledon grand slam from June 30. 'It's really special, this trophy and this tournament. I'm happy to lift this trophy once again,' he said. 'Jiri, you had an incredible week and it's a nightmare to play against you. Great week, great job and keep it up for Wimbledon. 'It has been an incredible week. I came without expectations and just wanted to play good tennis and to get used to the grass.' Alcaraz got a first look at a break point at 2-2, but he barely saw a furious ace that snuffed it out. At 4-5 the 22-year-old was in a spot of bother, serving at 0-30, but with a quick squeeze of the accelerator he reeled off eight of the next 10 points to hold and then grab the crucial break. Alcaraz had dropped just 10 points on serve before the second-set tie-break but he suddenly dropped his guard, with an untimely double fault and a pair of Lehecka aces taking the match the distance. But Lehecka dipped in the third with Alcaraz breaking for 3-1, and before long a flashing forehand brought up two championship points, the world number two taking the first and roaring with delight at a second Queen's title.

Bublik seals another Halle title as Medvedev wait goes on

dpa Halle, Germany Kazahkstan's unseeded Alexander Bublik beat third seed Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in the Halle final on Sunday to lay down a marker for Wimbledon. Russian Medvedev was in his first final for 15 months, but will head into the grass grand slam on June 30 without a title since 2023. The 2021 US Open champion was behind on a host of metrics as he was broken in the first set. Bublik, who also triumphed in Halle in 2023, was then equally assertive in the second set tie-break to triumph. The 27-year-old, born in Russia, picked up his fifth career title having ousted world number one Jannik Sinner in the last 16 on the west German grass. 'It's tough to speak. I had such tough months since last Wimbledon to probably this summer,' said Bublik, who had recently dropped outside the top 75 in the rankings 'I was close to calling it quits after Wimbledon (in 2024), because I was not enjoying it anymore. 'Now this is happening. I don't know. Quarters at the French. Winner here. I have no words.'
