How 'killer bride' Sonam Raghuvanshi escaped Meghalaya after husband's murder
NEW DELHI: Madhya Pradesh police on Tuesday revealed that Sonam Raghuvanshi, who allegedly orchestrated the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, had travelled over 2,000 km back to Indore before resurfacing a fortnight later at a dhaba in Uttar Pradesh.
Sonam, who vanished on May 23 near Wei Sawdong Falls in East Khasi Hills, reappeared gaunt and silent in Ghazipur on June 9, a week after Raja's body was found in a gorge near the falls parking lot on June 2. While she had claimed abduction and drugging, Indore police rejected the claim outright.
'We have information that Sonam reached Indore between May 25 and May 27 by train and stayed in a rented room in Dewas Gate,' said additional DCP (crime branch) Rajesh Dandotiya.
'Raj Kushwaha, her co-accused, met her there. He later arranged a taxi to UP.'
Police believe Sonam left Shillong soon after the crime, taking an intentionally convoluted route through Siliguri, travelling to Guwahati and then boarding a train to Patna. From there, she appears to have taken an indirect route to Indore, dodging flight bookings and digital footprints to confuse investigators. A senior UP police official confirmed, 'We have CCTV footage of her getting off a Guwahati-Patna train.
The route was chosen to misguide investigators.'
CCTV and surveillance data, along with behavioural analysis from 42 video clips, showed Sonam meeting with contract killers around 10 km from the crime scene. Police also discovered a crucial clue, a raincoat provided by Sonam to one of the accused, Akash Rajput, and a matching jacket worn by another suspect. A mobile screen from Raja's phone was also recovered.
Investigators found a machete used in the murder, reportedly bought near Guwahati railway station, not resembling local weapons in Meghalaya, suggesting premeditation.
One suspect, Anand Kurmi, was wearing the same attire from the day of the murder when arrested.
After returning to Indore, Sonam plotted her next move in a rented room and was later sent to Ghazipur via Varanasi, aided by a hired driver. Police have not yet disclosed why she was sent to Uttar Pradesh.
Sonam remained untraceable from May 23 until her surrender in Ghazipur on June 9. Her reappearance deepened the mystery, but coordinated efforts by Shillong Police and Indore Crime Branch led to five arrests across Madhya Pradesh.
Operation Honeymoon, the unofficial codename for the investigation, was launched by Meghalaya Police on June 7, culminating in major breakthroughs by June 8. Police sources revealed that within four days, Sonam's direct involvement was confirmed.
Sonam Raghuvanshi was brought to Shillong on Tuesday night and will be produced before a local court on Wednesday.

House Owner Who Sheltered Sonam After Murder Now Suspected Of Hiding Evidence

Last Updated: James, during questioning, revealed that Tomar had asked him to remove Sonam's bag from the flat after Sonam surrendered. The house owner, Tomar, is currently missing. As the investigation into the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi continues, with his wife Sonam currently in judicial custody, the Meghalaya SIT team now suspects the involvement of the owner of the Indore flat where Sonam and her aides hid after the crime. Lokendra Tomar, the owner of an infrastructure company, is accused of taking a bag belonging to Sonam from a house in the Hirabagh area of Indore. According to a report by NDTV, the bag contained a country-made pistol, Sonam's mobile phone, jewellery belonging to Raja, and Rs 5 lakh in cash. Tomar's name surfaced during the interrogation of Silome James, a property dealer who had rented the Indore flat to the murder accused. James, during questioning, revealed that Tomar had asked him to remove Sonam's bag from the flat after Sonam surrendered. The house owner, Tomar, is currently missing, as per NDTV report. Earlier on Saturday, police arrested James and a security guard in connection with the case. James was booked for concealing a jewellery box hidden in the flat, which allegedly belonged to Sonam. East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem had earlier confirmed that James was the lessee of the building at Heera Bagh Colony in Indore, where Sonam had stayed and stored valuables. The jewellery box, later burnt by James, is believed to hold key evidence linked to the murder, according to PTI sources. An SIT member revealed that Sonam's boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, had also kept a firearm, jewellery, and a laptop in the flat, which was rented by murder co-accused Vishal Chauhan. The flat was leased by James on May 30 for Rs 17,000 per month. A forensic team found no trace of the pistol, laptop, or jewellery at the site where the box was allegedly burned. Sonam stayed at the flat for several days after returning from Meghalaya, before surrendering to the police in Uttar Pradesh on June 8. First Published: June 23, 2025, 16:30 IST

Owner Of Flat, Where Sonam Raghuvanshi, Killers Lived, Suspected Of Hiding Evidence

New Delhi: The owner of the flat where murder-accused Sonam Raghuvanshi and her aides lived after killing her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, is under the scanner of the Meghalaya SIT for concealing evidence. Lokendra Tomar, an infrastructure company owner, allegedly took Sonam's bag containing a country-made pistol, her phone, Raja's jewellery, and Rs five lakh cash from the house in Indore's Hirabagh locality, police sources believe. Tomar emerged as a suspect while the police were questioning Silome James, the property dealer from Indore who rented the flat to the murder accused. According to James, Tomar had asked the property dealer to remove Sonam's bag from the flat shortly after she surrendered to the police. However, when he did not, the flat owner took it. Police sources said Tomar also tried to get the CCTV footage of the car showroom near his flat. Tomar is currently missing, and his phone is switched off. The police are carrying out raids to locate him in Indore, sources said. What we know about Sonam's bag According to the Meghalaya Special Investigation Team (SIT), Silome James had rented a flat in Indore's Hirabagh locality to one of three killers - Vishal Singh Chauhan. The victim's wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, is also believed to have stayed in the flat between May 26 and June 8, before she surrendered to the police. During her interrogation, Sonam said she left a black-coloured bag in the flat on June 8 and left for Ghazipur. Sonam's phone, Raja's jewellery, Rs five lakh cash, and a country-made pistol were kept in the bag. However, when the police raided the house, they did not find anything. Preliminary investigation, however, revealed that two days after Sonam surrendered, James and the building's security guard, Balveer, went to the flat and removed the bag and other evidence items. They allegedly set the bag on fire and destroyed it. The security guard was given Rs 5,000 to hide the evidence - following which he helped conceal it and escaped to his home in Ashok Nagar. James also took Sonam's laptop, which was later thrown away by his wife. The two were allegedly caught concealing the evidence in one of the CCTV cameras collected by the Meghalaya SIT. They were subsequently arrested. The Honeymoon Murder Case Raja and Sonam got married on May 11. Nine days later, they left for their honeymoon in Meghalaya on May 20 - with a one-way ticket in hand. The couple roamed around in the Northeast for three days before going "missing". When their family members could not reach them, they reached out to the police. What initially started as a probe to find the couple, turned into a murder investigation when Raja's body was found in a gorge on June 2, ten days after the brutal crime. His preliminary autopsy report revealed that he was attacked twice - once each on the back and front of his head. On the night of June 7, Sonam was found in an unconscious state at a 'dhaba' in Ghazipur. She was taken to the Ghazipur Medical College for treatment, where she surrendered before the police. The remaining three killers were also subsequently arrested. Preliminary investigation revealed that during their honeymoon, Sonam and Raja carried four phones ( of which three belonged to Sonam). After the three hitmen killed her husband, Sonam broke his phone and threw the damaged device, the police said. The other three mobile phones that belonged to Sonam are still missing, and the police are searching for them.

Sonam Raghuvanshi Hid Weapon, Jewellery At Indore Property; Two Arrested For Aiding Her

Last Updated: Two more suspects, a property dealer and a security guard, were arrested for helping Sonam Raghuvanshi conceal evidence in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case. Two more people, a property dealer and a security guard, were arrested on Saturday in connection with the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case. According to the details, the property dealer was arrested for concealing a jewellery box belonging to Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raja's wife and the prime accused in the case. The box was hidden in a flat in Indore after the murder last month, it was known. Commenting on the arrests, East Khasi Hills district SP Vivek Syiem said, 'The Meghalaya Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested one Silome James from Bhonrasa toll-gate in Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh while he was trying to flee to Bhopal around 7.30 pm on Saturday." 'He is a property dealer and lessee of a building at Heera Bagh Colony in Indore, where Sonam had stayed and kept the jewellery and other items she took with her after the incident," he said. Later, the SIT nabbed a security guard, identified as Balla Ahirwar, from his native village in Ashok Nagar district of Madhya Pradesh around 2 am on Sunday. He was posted at the property. The box is believed to have contained key evidence linked to the murder, PTI quoted sources as saying. The arrested property dealer led the SIT to the place where he had disposed of all the items of the box by burning, the officer said. A member of the SIT said that Sonam's boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, owned a firearm, and this was kept at the property along with jewellery and a laptop. At the site where James had burnt the box, there were no signs of the pistol, laptop or any of the jewellery belonging to Raja, he said, adding that a forensic team had also visited the spot and collected all available evidence. The flat was rented out to murder co-accused Vishal Chauhan by James, who runs a property management firm in Indore, they said. On June 13, James told reporters that Chauhan approached him on May 30 and rented the flat for Rs 17,000 per month, signing a formal agreement. However, when the Meghalaya Police later searched the flat, it was found vacant, as per the sources. Sonam stayed in the flat for several days on return from Meghalaya, before eventually surrendering to police in UP on June 8, the sources said. James and Ahirwar were produced before a court in Indore, which remanded them in the transit custody of Meghalaya Police for seven days, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Rajesh Dandotiya said. Indore-based transport businessman Raghuvanshi married Sonam on May 11 in Indore, and the couple left for their honeymoon in Meghalaya on May 20. The couple went missing on May 23, and Raja Raghuvanshi's mutilated body was recovered on June 2 from a deep gorge near a waterfall in the Sohra area of East Khasi Hills district. Raja was hacked to death by three men using two machetes near a secluded parking lot close to the famous Weisawdong falls in Sohra, it was later revealed. Sonam, accused of conspiring with her alleged lover to kill her husband, surrendered on June 8 before the police in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur district, while four other accused have been arrested from different locations in MP and UP. The Meghalaya Police had earlier arrested five persons in connection with the murder — Sonam, her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha and the latter's three friends Vishal Chauhan, Akash Rajput and Anand Kurmi. The five are currently in judicial custody and lodged at a jail in Meghalaya. First Published: June 23, 2025, 10:11 IST
