Egypt, Qatar reaffirm joint mediation efforts amid escalating Gaza crisis
Amid the unprecedented escalation in the Gaza Strip, Qatar and Egypt have reaffirmed their joint mediation efforts between Hamas and Israel, seeking to end the war and address the deepening humanitarian crisis.
In a joint statement issued Wednesday, the two countries emphasized that their mediation efforts are 'ongoing, consistent, and rooted in a unified vision' aimed at halting the unprecedented humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. The statement underscored the goal of achieving a comprehensive ceasefire and warned against attempts to undermine the mediation process through misinformation or political manipulation.
'Attempts to sow division among brothers through misinformation, distortion, or media escalation will not succeed,' the statement read, reaffirming the countries' full coordination with the United States toward securing a lasting agreement that safeguards civilians and ends the bloodshed.
Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari confirmed that mediation efforts continue despite the escalating complexity of the situation. He pushed back against criticism from within Israel, labelling it a product of 'internal political polarization,' and reiterated that Qatar is internationally recognized as an impartial mediator.
Al-Ansari pointed to contradictions in Israeli leadership, noting the divergence between President Isaac Herzog's praise of Qatar's mediation and more hostile rhetoric from the Israeli Foreign Ministry. 'We are fully aware of which parties are obstructing the path to an agreement,' he said, adding that several opportunities to reach a ceasefire have been deliberately thwarted.
Meanwhile, the conflict on the ground intensified. On Wednesday, Hamas accused Israeli forces of committing a 'new barbaric massacre' after an airstrike hit a crowded restaurant in western Gaza City, killing and injuring dozens, including women and children. The group condemned the attack as part of a broader campaign of 'systematic genocide' that includes targeting civilian shelters and food distribution centres.
Calling for urgent international intervention, Hamas accused the global community of a 'suspicious silence' and urged Arab and Islamic nations to escalate support for Palestinians through mass mobilization and diplomatic pressure.
In a related development, 55 international humanitarian and aid organizations—including Oxfam, Save the Children, and the Norwegian Refugee Council—issued a joint statement condemning new Israeli restrictions on NGO registration and operations. They warned the measures jeopardize humanitarian access and violate international law.
Additionally, six European nations—including Spain, Ireland, and Norway—voiced strong opposition to Israel's plans to expand its military control in Gaza, warning that any demographic or territorial changes would breach international law. Spain called for immediate action at the United Nations to halt the war.
According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, 38 Palestinians were killed and 145 injured in the past 24 hours. Since fighting resumed on 18 March, the death toll has reached 2,545, with 6,856 wounded. Since the war began in October 2023, a staggering 52,653 people have been killed and 118,897 injured—marking one of the deadliest chapters in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Separately, Hamas' armed wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, released footage showing what it claimed was a complex ambush against Israeli soldiers and military vehicles near Al-Zahraa Mosque in the Al-Jeneina neighborhood of Gaza. The operation is reportedly part of a broader campaign dubbed 'Gates of Hell.'

Trump's Gulf Arab allies race to avoid all-out war in Iran
CNN — Fearing the repercussions of a total regime collapse in Iran, Gulf Arab states have intensified their outreach to the Trump administration and Tehran over the past week. The United Arab Emirates, a US ally that has long been opposed to an unsupervised Iran nuclear program, has been in contact with officials in Tehran and Washington to avoid further escalation, according to a top official, amid fears that instability in Iran could affect the region. 'We're following the situation very closely… our diplomacy is working hard like many other countries,' Anwar Gargash, adviser to the UAE president, said on Friday. 'Concerns have to be resolved diplomatically… there are many issues in the region (and) if we choose to tackle everything with a hammer, nothing will be left unbroken.' Israel began an unprecedented attack on Iran last week, killing its top military brass as well as several nuclear scientists and destroyed part of its nuclear program. Iran has responded with a barrage of missile strikes on Israeli cities. Gargash, who delivered a letter from US President Donald Trump to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in March calling for nuclear talks, said any military escalation to the conflict will be 'detrimental' for the whole region. 'This is setting us back. The language of conflict is overpowering the new language of de-escalation and economic prosperity for the region,' Gargash said. Across the Gulf, growing anxiety about the conflict is driving efforts to prevent further escalation. Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke with Trump and called for a de-escalation hours after Israel struck Iran on June 13. The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, also spoke to the president and called for the crisis to be resolved 'through diplomatic means.' 'We have been making all the possible communication between all the parties regionally and abroad. These talks between us have been about finding a way out of the rabbit hole when it comes to this escalation,' the Qatari foreign ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari said Tuesday. Last month, Trump was feted with grand welcomes and trillion-dollar deals when he visited three Gulf Arab nations for the first presidential visit of his second term. At the time, Trump praised the 'birth of a modern Middle East' and signaled his intent to sign a deal with Iran to prevent it from building a nuclear bomb. Major exporters of energy, the Gulf states also fear that Iran may shut the Strait of Hormuz on its southern shore, through which a third of seaborne oil passes. Nightmare scenario Gulf Arab states, long critical of Iran's nuclear ambitions and its support for proxy militias across the Middle East, have in recent years softened their stance toward Tehran, pivoting toward diplomacy and rapprochement to avoid conflict. Experts warn that a US attack on Iran could draw it into a quagmire even more challenging than the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – a drawn-out confrontation that could last the duration of Trump's presidency and exact a heavy toll on American lives and resources at Israel's behest. 'Iran is large and could be fractured and divided along ethnic lines, (and it) has a considerable stockpile of missiles, UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles)… that essentially could fall out of central state control,' Hasan Alhasan, senior fellow for Middle East policy at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Bahrain, told CNN. 'I don't think anyone wants to see Iran slide to chaos, I think there is a broader desire and preference to deal with one bad actor rather than multiple bad actors,' he said. Firas Maksad, managing director for the Middle East at Eurasia Group, told CNN that Gulf Arab states are in a comfortable position seeing Iran weakened, but would much rather prefer diplomacy to avoid instability in the region. 'If there is in fact a diplomatic breakthrough… where Iran's nuclear ambitions towards a nuclear weapon at least are capped, Iran is much weakened and stability returns, that's a very positive outcome for (Gulf states),' he said. 'I would have to say, though, that the concern is that (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu drags the region and drags President Trump into further escalation by perhaps taking out Iran's ability to export oil,' he added. 'That might then take us in a much more negative direction in terms of blowback against Gulf (oil) facilities.' Trump's announcement on Thursday of a two-week diplomatic window now offers his Gulf Arab allies breathing space to push for de-escalation, following a week of unprecedented regional clashes that left the Middle East rattled and on edge.

Pakistani PM Holds Telephone Conversation with Iran's President
Ahmed Emam Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif held a telephone conversation with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, this afternoon. The Prime Minister conveyed Pakistan's condemnation of the U.S. attacks, which followed Israel's unprovoked and unjustified aggression over the past eight days. He reaffirmed Pakistan's unwavering solidarity with the brotherly people and Government of Iran, while expressing heartfelt condolences on the loss of precious lives and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured. The Prime Minister expressed concerns that the U.S. strikes had targeted facilities that were under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). These attacks constituted a serious violation of international law and the IAEA Statute. While noting Iran's right to self-defence, as enshrined under Article 51 of the UN Charter, the Prime Minister stressed upon the need to immediately return to dialogue and diplomacy as the only viable path forward. He also called for urgent collective efforts to de-escalate the situation. The Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan's readiness to play a constructive role in this context. President Pezeshkian conveyed his deep appreciation for Pakistan's support to Iran. He thanked the Prime Minister, the Government and people of Pakistan, including the military leadership, for standing in solidarity with the people and Government of Iran. The two leaders emphasized on the need and urgency of forging unity among the Ummah at this critical juncture.
