There is perhaps not a more storied and decorated college baseball program in the country than LSU.
The sixth-ranked Tigers have an opportunity to add to that history over the next few days at Charles Schwab Field as LSU opens up the best-of-three College World Series championship series on June 21 against No. 13 Coastal Carolina.
LSU enters championship week in Omaha coming off a thrilling come-from-behind victory against No. 3 Arkansas in the CWS semifinals on June 18. Trailing by two runs heading into the bottom of the ninth, LSU plated three runs in the inning, all of which came on Arkansas fielding mistakes. Jared Jones was the hero for the Tigers with the walk-off single into center.

How many times has LSU won the College World Series?
LSU has won the College World Series seven times in its rich history.
The Tigers first dogpiled in Omaha in 1991 when they defeated Wichita State 6-3. LSU would then win three national titles in a span of five years from 1993 through 1997, a time period that helped build LSU into an SEC and national powerhouse.
Then-LSU manager Skip Bertman led the Tigers to their fifth championship in 2000, making him one of just three head coaches to win five NCAA baseball titles. The Tigers' sixth national title came under Paul Mainieri in 2009, when LSU defeated Texas two games to one.
When did LSU last win the College World Series?
LSU last won the College World Series in 2023, when it took two of three games against No. 2 Florida.
The Tigers, a No. 5 seed that season, took Game 1 against the Gators by a score of 4-3. Florida bounced back in Game 2 and crushed LSU, 24-4. Wyatt Langford and Jac Caglianone were unstoppable for the Gators, a combined 7-for-11 at the plate with 11 RBIs, seven runs scored and three home runs.
But LSU won the winner-take-all Game 3 against Florida by another lopsided score of 18-4. After falling into a 2-0 deficit after the first inning, LSU plated 10 runs across the second and fourth innings to take a 10-2 lead and never looked back. Brayden Jobert led LSU with three runs — including a home run — and three RBIs. Dylan Crews and Tre' Morgan each scored three runs. LSU recorded 24 total hits compared to Florida's five.
"We got punched in the mouth yesterday," Crews said after winning the national championship. "That's the beauty of baseball. You wake up in the morning and do it all over again. We woke up today and you could see on everybody's faces that we were ready to go. Nobody in the country was going to beat us today."
To make the CWS finals in 2023, LSU went 3-1 in winners' bracket play, with that lone loss coming in the first CWS semifinal vs. Wake Forest. The Tigers, who needed just a win to advance to the finals, bounced back in the "if necessary" CWS semifinal game vs. the top seeded Demon Deacons, 2-0, behind a masterful eight-inning outing from Paul Skenes and a two-run, walk-off home run from Tommy White.

Geralds was incredibly tough last season and even continued in the event after getting a full dreadlock ripped out of his head as offensive linemen tried to hang on any which way they could. Collins Hill standout, who has Ohio State, Ole Miss, LSU and others involved, is whether he's a five-star prospect or not. His height might be an issue that holds him back but Geralds has everything else. Jeremiah Smith. Emeka Egbuka. Amon-Ra St. Brown. Julio Jones. There is a long and impressive list of No. 1 wide receivers in Rivals history and Keys is the top-ranked WR in this class as he's backed that up numerous times this offseason. The Hattiesburg, Miss., five-star standout was actually pretty quiet at the Rivals Five-Star last summer in Jacksonville before then going to Future 50 and dominating. A big-time performance in Indianapolis can lock up his No. 1 receiver ranking. If not, the door remains open because this is a loaded receiver class. Advertisement SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH LSU FANS AT What we love about McFarland is that he never, ever backs down from competition, shows up to everything and gets after it. He has legitimately dominated over and over again. The 2028 receiver from Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy is not only a camp and 7on7 warrior but he also puts up big numbers in games and should be under five-star consideration for his class. There will be some elite defensive backs who could hang with McFarland during the Rivals Five-Star but if he dominates again in this setting, then he could be competing for No. 1 slot receiver in the class. O'Brien was an absolute dominant force during OT7 this offseason where it seemed like he could get an interception any time he wanted it. The new Notre Dame commit has moved up the rankings and could get an even bigger boost later if he performs like he has at the Rivals Five-Star. Advertisement In a 7on7 setting, O'Brien has been phenomenal. Let's see how he performs covering receivers in a one-on-one setting, let's see how he moves his feet, reads and reacts and then goes after the ball. It should be pretty good. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH NOTRE DAME FANS AT Ojo, who took a shock official visit to Utah over the weekend but still has Texas very high on his list, has said multiple times that he's coming to Rivals Five-Star to prove he's the best offensive tackle in the country. That's really heady company considering fellow five-stars Jackson Cantwell and Immanuel Iheanacho are ranked ahead of him at the position but the Mansfield (Texas) Lake Ridge standout has all the toughness and all the competitive juice to come to Indianapolis and prove it. This might be the best collection of defensive linemen that Ojo has ever seen in one setting. But he has the skill to back up his talk. Mark Bowman is the only five-star tight end in the 2026 class right now but it's an insanely loaded group and many of them will be at the Rivals Five-Star. Advertisement Prothro is a little bit of an anomaly because even at 6-foot-6 and 207 pounds, the Bowdon, Ga., standout, who's ranked No. 2 at the position, moves so smoothly and fluidly that it wouldn't be a shock if he played more big receiver than in-line tight end. When Georgia was shooting for Prothro, Bowman and Lincoln Keyes in this class, the coaching staff told him as such. The Bulldogs, Auburn and others remain involved. Two of the top 2028 quarterbacks in the country – Wade and Wonderful 'Champ' Monds IV – will be among the elite quarterback group in Indianapolis and the Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy standout has a chance to solidify himself as the No. 1 quarterback in his class. Advertisement Wade, who's originally from California, is expected to start this season at IMG as a sophomore. He is well ahead of the curve for other 2028 quarterbacks and it wouldn't be a stunner if he reclassifies at some point. Among a loaded quarterback group, even as a rising sophomore, Wade could really impress. Wilder is a major bet on measurables and production. The four-star edge rusher from Gardena (Calif.) Serra would have had some of the best arm length in this year's NFL Draft and that's going into his senior season. The Ohio State commit has length, burst off the line, surprising power for not the biggest defensive end in the country and great counter moves to beat offensive tackles. If he produces at a high level in Columbus, then NFL teams should fall in love with him. Let's see how he does against elite national offensive tackles. Advertisement SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH OHIO STATE FANS AT Williams is already a five-star in the 2027 class and ranked third nationally. Now it's time to back it up against a great group of speedy, dynamic receivers coming to Rivals Five-Star. The Gardena (Calif.) Serra standout has experimented some at receiver this offseason and he's been good there but Williams could be an elite cover corner. He does need to add some weight but his fluidity and cover skills are top-notch. USC looks very strong here but many others will be involved. What's most interesting about Wyatt is that he could play almost anywhere on the field – on both sides of the ball. If he played receiver or tight end, it wouldn't be a shock. If he was a big safety like Derwin James (which is what he wants to do) then he could shine. Tennessee likes him as an outside linebacker possibly coming off the edge, too. Tennessee, Vanderbilt and others are involved with the Bell Buckle (Tenn.) Webb standout and in a setting like the Rivals Five-Star, where Wyatt could move around to different positions, he could have a tremendous day.

Tigers Today: Tigers shake off 3-game losing streak
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Tigers have bounced back after their first real stretch of adversity for the first time in a while. Starting with the second half of Thursday's doubleheader with Pittsburgh and the first two games of the series against the Rays, Detroit lost three in a row for just the third time all season. The Tigers (49-30) have only lost three consecutive games three times as we head toward the All-Star break. Even crazier? One of those streaks was the first series of the season when they faced the reigning champion Dodgers on the road. Better yet? They have yet to drop four in a row. Speaking of bizarre, the team is coming off a bit of a weird stretch and a whirlwind series in Tampa Bay. With Wednesday's rain out, the Tigers and Pirates played a split doubleheader on Thursday — one that featured two rain delays of its own. The final delay came in the ninth inning in a 4-4 tie, which ultimately ended in a flop, an 8-4 loss in extras. So, what should have been an early getaway day to get into Florida, ended up being a late night. Tigers broadcaster Jason Benetti says the team landed in Tampa around 2:30 on Friday morning. Advertisement Sign up for the News 8 daily newsletter Jack Flaherty got roughed up Friday night in a 14-8 loss and Tampa's bats handled Brant Hurter and Sawyer Gipson-Long for an 8-3 loss on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers scored six runs in the ninth inning on Sunday afternoon to put away the Rays and avoid a sweep with a 9-3 win. But things look a little different with a big-picture view. From the start of the doubleheader to the end of Sunday's game, the Tigers went 2-3 and packed in a late-night flight in less than 75 hours. Not too bad, all things considered. The reliever took two losses and gave up 10 total runs in three appearances. Advertisement It started with the 10th inning in the finale against Pittsburgh. After a brief rain delay, the Tigers couldn't generate the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, so A.J. Hinch sent Hurter out to keep the Pirates at bay. But the Buccos came out swinging, touching up Hurter for four runs, three earned, on four hits and a walk. Hurter served as the opener for Saturday afternoon's game in Tampa, and once again he got hit around. The 26-year-old lefty gave up four runs, all unearned, on two hits, two walks and a hit batter. With a 9-1 lead in the ninth on Sunday, Hurter was called on once again. This armchair manager suspects Hinch wanted to give him an opportunity to get his confidence back after two rough outings. It didn't work. He walked two batters and hit another to load the bases before being pulled. Two of those runners came around to score before Brenan Hanifee finished it out. Prior to this week, Hurter had been a solid option for the Tigers' bullpen. Before Thursday, he had a 1.67 ERA with a 1.01 WHIP (walks and hits per inning) in 37.2 innings. (Getty Images) MIZE AVOIDS INJURY The Tigers have already lost Jackson Jobe for the season and are still waiting for Alex Cobb and Reese Olson to get back, so it was a big relief when the team announced that Casey Mize did not suffer a serious injury during Sunday's game. Mize was pulled in the sixth inning with an apparent leg injury, but Hinch clarified afterward that it was just a cramp and the team was being cautious. The former No. 1 pick already missed two weeks last month with a hamstring strain, and spent two months on the injured list last year with a similar injury. Advertisement Sunday was one of Mize's best starts of the season. He gave up six hits but were able to pitch around trouble. He allowed just one run on a solo home run. INJURY UPDATE Speaking of Olson and Cobb, the two starters are getting closer to a return. Hinch told reporters on Friday that Olson will take one more rehab start before being activated from the 15-day injured list. The 25-year-old went down in mid-May after inflammation in the ring finger on his throwing hand. He has completed some rehab starts in the minors, initially avoiding his changeup, which places the most pressure on the injured finger. He pitched 3.2 scoreless innings on Thursday for Triple-A Toledo on 58 pitches. Advertisement We should also see more action this week from Cobb. The veteran got another pain injection in his left hip on June 13 and was shut down for a week. He has been approved for restarting bullpen sessions. He has made a handful of rehab appearances for High-A West Michigan and Triple-A Toledo, where he has been effective, but the timeline has yet to shake out. UP NEXT The Tigers have another day off on Monday before returning to Detroit for a six-game homestand.
