Public sector workers in Dubai to get flexible working hours: What you need to know

Dubai has officially reintroduced its seasonal workplace initiative, 'Our Flexible Summer', offering government employees flexible working hours aimed at boosting productivity and enhancing work-life balance during the scorching summer period.
The Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR) confirmed that the initiative will run from July 1 to September 12, 2025, and will apply across government entities at each department's discretion. This follows a successful pilot conducted in 2024.
'This is all about supporting a better work-life balance for our government teams,' the DGHR said in a public statement, highlighting the initiative's aim to make summer 'a little cooler' for public sector staff.
Two Work Schedule Options Under the Initiative
Under the temporary model, the standard five-day workweek remains in place, but employees can choose from two flexible scheduling options:
Group 1: Work 8 hours per day from Monday to Thursday and take Friday off entirely.
Group 2: Work 7 hours per day from Monday to Thursday, and 4.5 hours on Friday.
The choice of implementation is left to each government department, allowing flexibility across different operations.
The DGHR stated that the initiative 'comes after the successful trial run earlier this year' and is intended to increase employee happiness and overall productivity during the UAE's peak summer months.
Results from the Previous Trial Phase
The program isn't new. In 2024, the Dubai Government rolled out a similar model between August 12 and September 30 across 21 government entities.
According to data analysed from that pilot, the initiative:
Led to enhanced productivity
Created more positive work environments
Achieved a 98% satisfaction rate among participating employees, based on official evaluation systems
The results confirmed that flexible working arrangements could have a measurable impact on both employee wellbeing and departmental performance.
This year's expanded rollout reflects the government's confidence in the model's success.
Longer Weekends and Broader Worker Welfare Measures
Currently, most government employees in Dubai enjoy a two-and-a-half-day weekend, with a half-day on Friday, and full days on Saturday and Sunday. The new schedule will allow some staff to enjoy a full three-day weekend, depending on the group selected.
In parallel, the UAE continues to implement additional summer workforce protections, particularly for outdoor and field-based workers.
As of June 15, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) began enforcing the annual midday break, which bans work under direct sunlight from 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM, daily until September 15.
MoHRE inspectors have already begun site checks, with fines of Dh5,000 per worker for violations, up to a maximum of Dh50,000 in cases involving multiple breaches.
In addition, the ministry has set up over 10,000 air-conditioned rest stations across the country to support delivery service workers, helping them cope with extreme heat during the peak season.

He shared that these were not being developed in isolation, but as part of integrated logistics and industrial corridors, fully connected through road, rail, and multimodal networks. The Chairperson of Visakhapatnam Port Authority, M Angamuthu, emphasised that Andhra Pradesh had the right foundations to emerge as a maritime entrepreneurship hub, with its strategic location, proactive governance, and well-established port network. He noted that most major ports in the state were currently operating at just 50 per cent capacity, indicating significant untapped potential. The Chairman of CII, G Murali Krishna, highlighted that ports were no longer just trade enablers but strategic national assets influencing diplomacy, jobs, and regional growth. He shared that Andhra Pradesh's balanced economy and strong policy incentives had already attracted Rs.9.2 lakh crore in investments.

MSRDC to complete land acquisition for key infra projects by year-end

Pune: The state govt will disburse Rs17,000 crore to acquire land linked to major infrastructure projects being implemented by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) On Thursday, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis held a high-level meeting with senior bureaucrats and MSRDC officials. He directed them to expedite land acquisition across multiple big-ticket projects and ensure no delays occur because of administrative bottlenecks. Nine critical MSRDC-led projects — including expressways and multimodal corridors — were reviewed. The govt aims to complete all land acquisition for listed projects by the end of the year, paving the way for timely execution and seamless infrastructure development across the state. Vice-chairman and managing director of MSRDC Anilkumar Gaikwad told TOI that land acquisition for the Pune Ring Road and the Jalna–Nanded expressway is nearing completion. "For the remaining projects — such as the multimodal Virar–Alibaug expressway, the Shaktipeeth expressway, three major roads in Vidarbha and the Navgaon–Morgaon and Vadhwan–Samruddhi connectors — land measurement is underway. "The CM has made it clear that acquisition delays will escalate project costs and should be avoided," he said. Of the Rs36,000 crore approved — Rs 9,000 crore is allocated to the Pune Ring Road, Rs2,140 crore to Jalna–Nanded expressway and Rs22,000 crore to the Virar–Alibaug multimodal corridor. The CM also stressed the importance of determining the implementation model — whether via Public-Private Partnership or Build-Operate-Transfer — once land acquisition is complete. Land measurement for Shaktipeeth expressway is complete in 86 of the 300 villages involved, with joint measurement expected to finish by Aug. The expressway, dubbed the Golden Triangle, will connect key religious and economic zones across Nagpur, Mumbai and Goa. "It will enhance north-to-east connectivity and function as a pilgrim circuit," said a senior MSRDC official. He instructed the finance department to release Rs12,000 crore for land acquisition and ordered the forest department to begin the process of obtaining necessary clearances — particularly for the ecologically sensitive Morbe to Karanja section of the Virar–Alibaug corridor — without delaying parallel administrative work. The CM said the Vadhwan–Igatpuri expressway plan should be finalised. In Vidarbha, plans for the Bhandara–Gadchiroli, Nagpur–Chandrapur and Nagpur–Gondiya expressways are to be finalised on priority. Other key infrastructure projects discussed included the Navegaon (Mor)–Surjagad mineral corridor, as well as the Wardha–Nanded and Vadsa–Gadchiroli railway projects. The meeting also reviewed land acquisition for proposed airports at Kolhapur, Karad, Akola, Gadchiroli and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Fadnavis said, "Agencies must work on mission mode. Land acquisition should begin immediately and officials must follow the defined timelines strictly."
