Mizoram agri practices linked to tribal life: Min

Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan
highlighted on Thursday that Mizoram's agricultural practices are fundamentally connected to its tribal communities' way of life.
During the inauguration of the College of Horticulture's administrative-academic building in Thenzawl, Serchhip district, Chauhan said the state's primary horticultural produce — including passion fruit, mandarin orange, banana, mango, pineapple, dragon fruit, cabbage, tomato, brinjal, chow-chow, ginger, turmeric, and chili — are ideally suited to the region's environmental conditions.
He expressed concern that despite abundant rainfall, the state currently utilises only 4.5% of its cultivable land, with most cultivation occurring in mountainous regions.
"Additionally, oil palm cultivation is emerging as an innovative agricultural activity in the state. In the year 2021–22, agriculture and allied sectors contributed Rs. 6,13,716 lakh to the state's Gross Domestic Product, reflecting the central role of agriculture in Mizoram's economy," he said.
CM Lalduhoma, speaking at the event, praised the College of Horticulture, Thenzawl's development since 2016 into a centre of excellence. He emphasised that the college, situated in one of Mizoram's most significant locations, provides comprehensive education combining academic excellence with practical application.
He noted that the BSc (Hons) in horticulture programme, following ICAR's 5th Dean Committee recommendations, prepares students for leadership roles in horticulture.

Nine year since FSSAI ban, food still served on newspapers in Tiruchy; health risks, lax enforcement persist

TIRUCHY: Nine years after the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) banned the use of newspapers for directly wrapping or serving food, vendors across Tiruchy continue the practice unabated. From vadas and samosas to chicken pakoras, oily snacks are routinely served on printed sheets — a habit driven by affordability, convenience, and lax enforcement. Despite FSSAI's warning that toxic ink chemicals can leach into hot or greasy food, tea stalls and bakeries across the city persist, with shopkeepers citing cost pressures. English dailies bought from scrap dealers at Rs 25–30 per kg are cut into squares and used for up to 15 days. At a tea stall in Othakadai, stacks of cut newspapers were seen ready for use. 'If we raise prices by even Rs 2, customers would switch shops,' said a shopkeeper, pointing to economic resistance to change. However, a few shops using food-safe options mainly like khaki butter paper sheets and banana leaves have managed to retain customers, suggesting that reluctance to change also stems from inertia, not just cost "These newspapers are the only option here if I need to soak up the oil," said KC Rajalingam, a regular customer at the Othakadai's tea stall. "Even if it's not healthier, I have no choice," he added. Officials estimate over 4,500 snack outlets operate in the Tiruchy district, including more than 2,000 in the city's 65 wards alone.

Govt forms empowered panel to set standards, certification for ropeways

NEW DELHI: THE Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has constituted an empowered committee to develop standards and certification systems for ropeways and allied components. The 'national framework for technical codes, certifications, commissioning and safety audits' of ropeways to be devised by the committee aims to provide a structured approach to managing risks, verifying adherence to standards and reglations, and preventing untoward incidents or failures. With the ropeway sector growing rapidly, officials said it is essential to create an institutional framework to coordinate technical standards and collaboration between state and Union territory governments; focusing primarily on ensuring public safety. The panel – Empowered Committee for Ropeways Technical Evaluation, Certification and Safety (EC-Rope-TECS) – will be headed by Director General (Road Development and Special Secretary) and comprise Chief Engineer, MoRTH, head of the department of the bureau of Indian standards dealing with ropeway systems and allied infrastructure, and technical representatives from states or UTs with significant experience in implementation of ropeway systems, as members.
