Support Palestine and Rebuild Gaza : Foreign Ministry Briefs Lawmakers on Bahrain's UN Security Council Bid and Arab Summit Role
TDT | Manama
Securing full United Nations membership for Palestine, rebuilding Gaza, and advancing Bahrain's bid for a Security Council seat were the key points of discussion at a joint meeting between lawmakers and Foreign Minister, His Excellency Dr. Abdullatif Al Zayani.
The session drew together Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam, Shura Council Chairman Ali Al Saleh, and members from both chambers, with the foreign minister offering a detailed account of Bahrain's activity during its presidency of the 33rd Arab Summit and its role at the 34th Summit in Baghdad.
Dr. Al Zayani said Bahrain had proposed a number of moves during its leadership of the summit in May 2024, including a call for an international gathering to address the Palestinian issue based on a two-state solution, and backing for Palestine's full seat at the UN.
He added that Bahrain had also urged support for the Egyptian-led effort to rebuild Gaza and had presented ideas in areas such as education, health, and digital finance.
Royal Efforts
The Foreign Minister told the meeting that His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa had personally led follow-up efforts, travelling to Moscow, Beijing, London, and Paris to share the summit's outcomes and press for global support.
A separate summit in Cairo, co-chaired with Egypt's President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in March this year, endorsed a detailed recovery plan for Gaza.
In addition, Dr. Al Zayani revealed that Bahrain has formed a national committee, headed by the Foreign Minister himself, to keep track of the Bahrain Summit's outcomes.
Full Report
A full report was handed over to the Arab League and again during the Baghdad meeting.
Bahrain also hosted several regional meetings, including the 54th Arab Information Ministers gathering and the 44th meeting of Social Affairs Ministers.
Throughout the year, Bahraini diplomats have taken part in meetings with UN bodies, Arab-Islamic committees, and international groups focused on Palestine and Gaza.
The country is now campaigning for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2026–2027 term.
Dr. Al Zayani said the campaign rests on three aims: peace, human dignity, and long-term development.
Members of both councils expressed support for the efforts and said they were ready to help Bahrain push its proposals through international and parliamentary channels.

Iran Says US Has Blown Up Diplomacy
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who plans to travel to Moscow to meet President Putin on Monday, has reacted to the major US bombing of his country's nuclear facilities by saying 'all options' are on the table militarily, and that this effectively has blown up any efforts at diplomacy. 'The events this morning are outrageous and will have everlasting consequences. Each and every member of the UN must be alarmed over this extremely dangerous, lawless and criminal behavior,' he said. 'In accordance with the UN Charter and its provisions allowing a legitimate response in self-defense, Iran reserves all options to defend its sovereignty, interest, and people.' On Sunday morning, Trump's Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth sought to present the overnight attacks as 'intentionally limited' in scope, and described that this is not a regime change operation. He told the Iranians to heed Trump's call to return to the negotiating table, and that the US military is ready to unleash more strikes if need President JD Vance too in fresh statements has expressed hope of pursuing a diplomatic solution. 'We do not want to protract this or build this out any more than it's already been built out. We want to end their nuclear program,' Vance told NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday 'We want to talk to the Iranians about a long-term settlement here,' he added. But at least on a public level, Iran's foreign ministry is saying the diplomatic path is over as the US has shut the door with its brazen attack. Iran's official nuclear energy agency has the most interesting characterization of the US action, in the below via state media: The organization denounced the passive stance of the IAEA, which is not only ignoring the violations but, through its silence, enabling such aggressive behavior. 'It is unfortunate that this action—clearly against international law—has taken place with the indifference and, in some cases, complicity of the International Atomic Energy Agency,' the AEOI added. The statement called on the global community to denounce 'lawless jungle behavior' by the US and to stand by Iran in defending its legitimate rights. The statement further called out 'the American enemy' in stating, 'The American enemy, through a statement by its president in social media, has officially claimed responsibility for the attacks on these sites, which are under continuous monitoring by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) based on the safeguards agreement and the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).' And crucially: Behrouz Kamalvandi, a spokesperson for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, says efforts to develop the civilian nuclear sector will go on. 'This is not the first time our facilities are attacked,' Kamalvandi told Iran's YJC news agency. 'Considering our capabilities, the nuclear industry must continue.' The elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has at the same time declared 'now the war has begun' – as the region braces for the coming Iranian response. Trump Has Bombed Iran. What Happens Next Is His US is the only nation on earth that can rival Israel in its ability to play the victim when the ball they've thrown at the wall bounces by Tim Foley. — Caitlin Johnstone (@caitoz) June 22, 2025 Below is the IRGC statement as reprinted in Iraqi Kurdistan English-language media: Shortly after the attack, the IRGC published a brief statement on its official X account, writing: 'Now the war has begun for us.' The message underscores the gravity of the attack on one of Iran's most sensitive nuclear sites and suggests that Tehran now considers itself fully engaged in open warfare. Iran previously warned that it could hit back directly on US bases in the region if it comes under attack. No doubt, the Pentagon and US Central Command (CENTCOM) is bracing are such potential retaliation, which could come in the form of drones and ballistic missiles – as happened in Iraq following the Soleimani assassination during Trump's first term. Recent reports have pointed to an American troop drawdown at a couple of bases in Syria, but not a full withdrawal of the occupation. US troops remain in Iraq, but also at many bases just across the water from Iran in the Arab Gulf kingdoms. Iran's FM says the attacks are 'unforgiveable' and that it made the possibility of diplomacy moot: 'IRRELEVANT to ask Iran to return to diplomacy, because we WERE in the middle of diplomacy'Araghchi says US 'gave green light to Israel, if not INSTRUCTED them to attack nuclear sites'Adds Israel and US 'only understand language of threat and force, this is very unfortunate' — RT (@RT_com) June 22, 2025 To review the details of what happened overnight, the US deployed six B-2 bombers to drop 12 GBU-57 'bunker-buster' bombs on Iran's heavily fortified Fordow nuclear site, marking the first time these massive 30,000-pound bombs were used in combat. The enrichment sites at Natanz and Isfahan were also attacked. The mission lasted about 37 hours with multiple refueling missions. While the White House is now claiming Iran's nuclear facilities were 'completely and totally obliterated,' officials say it's too early to confirm the full extent of the damage. Tehran is signaling only limited damage, and that entrances to the facilities were struck, at this point war propaganda is kicking in, and Iranian leaders will likely only conceal the full extent of the destruction. Damascus Church Bombing Kills 15 Syrian Christians
The oldest Christian population on Earth continues to be under threat of extinction, after the US-Gulf-Israel war of regime change in Syria, and former President Bashar al-Assad's overthrow on December 8 of last year. On Sunday, a suicide bomber entered St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Church and detonated while a service was happening, killing at least fifteen – according to early reports (alongside possibly a second attacker) – and leaving many more wounded. The church is now a bloody mess, and personnel at the scene have struggled to identify body parts. The church is in an ancient Christian neighborhood that lies outside the Damascus old city's Bab Sharqi, and is in an area of many churches, chapels, and Christian cemeteries. Some initial reports said it may have been a car bomb, but regional sources as well as the popular regional account War Monitor indicate that 'A suicide bomber blew himself up with an explosive belt inside the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Elias in the Douileh area of Damascus, Syria.' And Reuters notes that 'It was the first suicide bombing in Damascus since Bashar al-Assad was toppled by an Islamist-led rebel insurgency in December.' Reuters says at least 20 people were killed and dozens more injured, amid conflicting emergency response reports. A Middle East church source, Syriac Press , describes: According to eyewitness reports, a gunman wearing an explosive vest stormed the church and opening fire. He then detonated his explosive vest. The attack prompted immediate intervention by civil defense teams and medical personnel. Victims were evacuated to hospitals in Daramsuq, where an alert was issued to handle the influx of injured. Ambulance teams worked to secure the area while local security forces cordoned off the site, blocking neighborhood entrances as a precaution against potential further attacks. The Church of Mar Elias, a prominent Christian landmark in the region, holds significant spiritual and historical value for the local community. Journalist Hussam Hammoud, reporting from the scene, described in the aftermath that 'Many of the victims are civilians and children, and security forces prevent journalists from entering the site.' Worst nightmare for Syrian Christians begins: Suicide bombing today during Divine Liturgy at Mar Elias church.. just outside of Bab Sharqi near Old Damascus. At least 15 dead & rising. My-father-in-law's funeral/memorial was here many years ago. Been to this beautiful community… — Brad Hoff (@BradRHoff) June 22, 2025 Years ago, during the height of the anti-Assad insurgency, this all-Christian neighborhood of Damascus was on the front line of conflict as it is next to Jobar district, which was at the time occupied by al-Qaeda. That was a period of sporadic artillery fire launched indiscriminately on the oldest Christian parts of the Syrian capital. The Baathist government of Assad was quasi-secular and protected the region's Christians, as well as other religious 'minorities'. Christian leaders have feared that since Jolani and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham's (HTS) takeover, they no longer have protection, and it could become 'open season' on attacking churches. Hundreds of thousands of Syrian Christians with means have left their homeland after some 14 years of brutal war. Back in 2015 when a jihadist coalition, with Western support, took over Idlib province – one of the first acts of the bearded so-called 'liberators' was to execute Christians and kidnap an Orthodox Christian priest. MP's Unity Call Rallies Nation Behind Leadership Amid Regional Tensions
TDT | Manama Bahrain must stand firm in the face of regional turmoil, with national unity serving as the first line of defence, a Member of Parliament has urged. Dr Maryam Al Dhaen, who sits on the Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee, said Bahrainis must uphold solidarity and resist any efforts to sow division, calling it a 'historic responsibility' for every citizen. 'We are aware of the magnitude of the surrounding dangers,' she said. 'We must rise to this historic responsibility by standing united against every attempt to destabilise or undermine our national principles. There is no room for complacency or division, as Bahrain is strong because of its people and their awareness.' Support for leadership Dr Al Dhaen affirmed full backing for the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, saying Bahrain's strength rests in its cohesion around wise governance. She also praised Bahrain's foreign policy stance, describing it as balanced and rooted in peace and stability. Bahrain's 'firm and declared' position on regional developments, she said, is evidence of that commitment. Calling on citizens to turn away from misinformation, Dr Al Dhaen cautioned against the dangers of rumour-mongering during tense times. 'Social media should be platforms for building and solidarity, not tools for destruction or spreading rumours,' she said, urging the public to rely only on official channels for updates.
