Winning Club World Cup would not make up for City's disappointing season, says Guardiola
June 22 (Reuters) - Winning the Club World Cup title again would not make up for the disappointing 2024-25 season that Manchester City have had, manager Pep Guardiola said ahead of Sunday's Group G clash with Emirati side Al-Ain in Atlanta.
Guardiola's City fell short of winning the Premier League for the fifth time in a row, finishing third in the English top-flight. They also failed to reach the Champions League's round of 16, being eliminated by Real Madrid in the knockout phase playoffs.
"I said many times, the season was not good," Guardiola told reporters on Saturday.
"Winning this competition is not going to change that, but my mindset at the moment is not about winning the competition. We can extend our time here, being here longer."
Guardiola, who has won the Club World Cup four times as manager, guided City to their first world title in 2023, before the tournament was revamped as a 32-team competition to be held once every four years.
City, who beat Morocco's Wydad Casablanca 2-0 in their campaign opener, have a chance to qualify for the round of 16 with a win over Al-Ain, who suffered a 5-0 loss to Juventus in their first game.
"Now we're here, I want to do the best. I want to enjoy the moment here because you're here one time every four years... And I want to arrive in the latter stages," Guardiola added.

And it wasn't only in the stands where tensions were spilling over. Coastal Carolina coach Kevin Schnall and first base coach Matt Schilling were ejected in the bottom of the first inning. Walker Mitchell was at bat with two outs and Sebastian Alexander had just stolen base when Schnall went to the top steps of the dugout, gestured at plate umpire Angel Campos with three fingers and began shouting at him. Campos signaled Schnall's ejection, prompting the coach to charge out to argue. Schilling then was thrown out. It was not immediately known what Schnall was disputing. Associate head coach Chad Oxendine took over Schnall's duties. Coastal Carolina needs a victory to stay alive in the best-of-three series, which LSU leads 1-0.

Chelsea set Nicolas Jackson asking price as Premier League club enter race
Chelsea have set a steep asking price for Nicolas Jackson after a Premier League club entered the race to secure his signature. Jackson enjoyed a relatively promising first season at Stamford Bridge following a £32m move from Villarreal in 2023, scoring 17 goals in all competitions. But the Senegal international went backwards last season, only scoring one Premier League goal in the second-half of the campaign. Wastefulness in front of goal has not been his own problem, either, with Jackson seeing red in two of his last five appearances, including in Chelsea's Club World Cup defeat to Flamengo. Jackson started that game from the bench as Enzo Maresca handed new signing Liam Delap his first Chelsea start since his £30m move from Ipswich Town. But Chelsea have seemingly already decided to put their faith in Delap and are therefore open to offers for Jackson. On Saturday, it was reported that Juventus had opened talks with Chelsea to discuss a deal for the 24-year-old. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says an unnamed Premier League club are also showing interest in Jackson, who Chelsea value at between €55-60m. Given Chelsea's steep asking price of around £50m, Juventus are ready to turn to other targets unless the Blues shown a willingness to lower their demands. 'I think Nicolas Jackson has definitely been disrespected. I think he's the focal point and a real presence up there. 'He occupies the centre-halves and takes them back to create space for the likes of Cole Palmer to come into. 'Palmer, in particular, profited off the space that Jackson created him. Enzo [Fernandez] as well. I think Enzo is a better No. 10 than a No.8 and when he gets forward he's a real goal threat. 'But they need someone who is going to lead the line and occupy the centre-halves and create that space for them. 'He's been a huge miss. He's not a prolific goalscorer but he's certainly a threat and they can't replace him. Mets option slumping C Francisco Alvarez to Triple-A
June 22 - Once a highly touted prospect, New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday in the wake of his offensive struggles this season. Alvarez, 23, baseball's No. 1 prospect in 2022 who hit 25 home runs as a rookie in 2023, is hitting just .236 with three homers and 11 RBIs in 35 games this season. In a corresponding move, the Mets recalled Hayden Senger to serve as the backup to starter Luis Torrens. After making a splash as a 21-year-old rookie, Alvarez has been hampered by multiple wrist and hand injuries and regressed last year. In parts of four seasons with the Mets since debuting in 2022, Alvarez is a .223 hitter with 40 homers and 122 RBIs in 263 games.
