Winning Club World Cup would not make up for City's disappointing season, says Guardiola

Reuters13 hours ago

June 22 (Reuters) - Winning the Club World Cup title again would not make up for the disappointing 2024-25 season that Manchester City have had, manager Pep Guardiola said ahead of Sunday's Group G clash with Emirati side Al-Ain in Atlanta.
Guardiola's City fell short of winning the Premier League for the fifth time in a row, finishing third in the English top-flight. They also failed to reach the Champions League's round of 16, being eliminated by Real Madrid in the knockout phase playoffs.
"I said many times, the season was not good," Guardiola told reporters on Saturday.
"Winning this competition is not going to change that, but my mindset at the moment is not about winning the competition. We can extend our time here, being here longer."
Guardiola, who has won the Club World Cup four times as manager, guided City to their first world title in 2023, before the tournament was revamped as a 32-team competition to be held once every four years.
City, who beat Morocco's Wydad Casablanca 2-0 in their campaign opener, have a chance to qualify for the round of 16 with a win over Al-Ain, who suffered a 5-0 loss to Juventus in their first game.
"Now we're here, I want to do the best. I want to enjoy the moment here because you're here one time every four years... And I want to arrive in the latter stages," Guardiola added.

Son begs his mom to stop trying to fight fellow LSU fan in embarrassing College World Series viral clip

One LSU fan took the term 'Tiger mom' to a whole new level during Sunday's College World Series finals. LSU took on Coastal Carolina in Game 2 of the College World Series in Omaha Sunday but some Tigers fans appeared to forget who their rivals were as they turned on each other. In a now viral video, a young boy was left thoroughly embarrassed by his mom when she tried to spark a fight. The woman, wearing a bright yellow dress, was captured shouting at a man in an LSU football jersey. She wildly gestured at him, screamed the odd obscenity in his face, and even attempted the haul herself over the rows of seats separating the two. Thankfully for the other fan, another man, who appeared to be her husband, managed to hold her back. It is unclear what triggered the furious reaction, but the man appeared unfazed by the crazed woman as he just laughed in response to her rant. Hey fighting Tigers — OMAHA LSU Jesus (@LSUJesus) June 22, 2025 Other spectators around them watched on shocked, but it was her son that appeared to be the most stunned. The youngster, who was wearing former Tiger Dylan Crews' jersey, could be heard pleading with her to stop. Despite his desperate begging, the woman only began to calm down when another older woman approached her in an attempt to diffuse the situation. And it wasn't only in the stands where tensions were spilling over. Coastal Carolina coach Kevin Schnall and first base coach Matt Schilling were ejected in the bottom of the first inning. Walker Mitchell was at bat with two outs and Sebastian Alexander had just stolen base when Schnall went to the top steps of the dugout, gestured at plate umpire Angel Campos with three fingers and began shouting at him. Campos signaled Schnall's ejection, prompting the coach to charge out to argue. Schilling then was thrown out. It was not immediately known what Schnall was disputing. Associate head coach Chad Oxendine took over Schnall's duties. Coastal Carolina needs a victory to stay alive in the best-of-three series, which LSU leads 1-0.

Chelsea set Nicolas Jackson asking price as Premier League club enter race

Chelsea have set a steep asking price for Nicolas Jackson after a Premier League club entered the race to secure his signature. Jackson enjoyed a relatively promising first season at Stamford Bridge following a £32m move from Villarreal in 2023, scoring 17 goals in all competitions. But the Senegal international went backwards last season, only scoring one Premier League goal in the second-half of the campaign. Wastefulness in front of goal has not been his own problem, either, with Jackson seeing red in two of his last five appearances, including in Chelsea's Club World Cup defeat to Flamengo. Jackson started that game from the bench as Enzo Maresca handed new signing Liam Delap his first Chelsea start since his £30m move from Ipswich Town. It was recently suggested by ex-Chelsea star John Obi Mikel that Jackson would remain Maresca's first-choice striker next season ahead of Delap, who scored more goals than his new teammate for a team that were relegated from the Premier League. But Chelsea have seemingly already decided to put their faith in Delap and are therefore open to offers for Jackson. On Saturday, it was reported that Juventus had opened talks with Chelsea to discuss a deal for the 24-year-old. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says an unnamed Premier League club are also showing interest in Jackson, who Chelsea value at between €55-60m. Given Chelsea's steep asking price of around £50m, Juventus are ready to turn to other targets unless the Blues shown a willingness to lower their demands. 'I think Nicolas Jackson has definitely been disrespected. I think he's the focal point and a real presence up there. 'He occupies the centre-halves and takes them back to create space for the likes of Cole Palmer to come into. 'Palmer, in particular, profited off the space that Jackson created him. Enzo [Fernandez] as well. I think Enzo is a better No. 10 than a No.8 and when he gets forward he's a real goal threat. 'But they need someone who is going to lead the line and occupy the centre-halves and create that space for them. 'He's been a huge miss. He's not a prolific goalscorer but he's certainly a threat and they can't replace him. 'They've got nobody like him to come in – they've tried it with [Christopher] Nkunku or playing with Pedro Neto as a false nine but it's not worked. 'Sometimes as a manager you have to find a different way. I just think they're a bit to predictable on the ball, playing sideways and backwards, but perhaps there isn't the options forward when the midfield players look up. 'Jackson would normally be stretching the opposition in behind or they could play longer into his chest and have him hold the ball up. They haven't had that in his absence so he's been a huge miss.' Ex-Premier League manager Tim Sherwood speaking to Metro After being sent off in Chelsea's second Club World Cup fixture, Flamengo boss Filipe Luis backed Jackson to develop into one of the best strikers in the world. When asked about Jackson's red card, Filipe Luis said: 'First of all, I love Chelsea. 'I spent one really happy season there, we won the Premier League and the League Cup and I made special friends and played with the best players in the world for a season, and I was really happy there. More Trending 'So I know how the club is special and how the club needs to win titles because of the pressure inside the club, it happens. 'But he [Jackson] is so good, he's young, he has all the potential and quality the club needs. 'For sure, he will surpass this little mistake. I think it was clear, I just saw it in front of me, I haven't seen it on the TV yet, but for me it was a red. 'But it is just a small detail for a player who is a big player, he can be one of the biggest strikers in the world.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Mets option slumping C Francisco Alvarez to Triple-A

June 22 - Once a highly touted prospect, New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday in the wake of his offensive struggles this season. Alvarez, 23, baseball's No. 1 prospect in 2022 who hit 25 home runs as a rookie in 2023, is hitting just .236 with three homers and 11 RBIs in 35 games this season. In a corresponding move, the Mets recalled Hayden Senger to serve as the backup to starter Luis Torrens. After making a splash as a 21-year-old rookie, Alvarez has been hampered by multiple wrist and hand injuries and regressed last year. In parts of four seasons with the Mets since debuting in 2022, Alvarez is a .223 hitter with 40 homers and 122 RBIs in 263 games. The 28-year-old Senger made his major league debut this season with the Mets, appearing in 13 games and hitting .179 in 28 at-bats. --Field Level Media
