Banita Sandhu supports Deepika Padukone's 8-hour shift demand, recalls fighting 18-hour work shifts: ‘I am blacklisted'

Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone's reported exit from Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Spirit has sparked a debate about an eight-hour shift for actors in the industry. While many actors supported the demand, others linked it to individual perspectives. Banita Sandhu, who has worked on both Hollywood and Bollywood projects, recalled speaking out against 16–18-hour shifts in Bollywood. In an interview with Screen, Banita highlighted the importance of strong industry regulations, noting that one of the key advantages in the West is the presence of powerful unions that protect both actors and crew members. She recalled consistently advocating for 12-hour turnovers on sets, stressing that filmmaking is not a war and no one's mental health should be compromised in the process. According to her, the job should never come at the cost of basic human rights.
She further recalled speaking out against 16–18-hour shifts in Bollywood and said, "With Hindi cinema, it is getting better now. But early in my career, when I really didn't understand how industries work, I just assumed this was the way to work. I did 16–18 hours a day shifts, where producers aligned my schedule, I would shoot the whole day and then fly at night. I didn't sleep for 24 hours straight. I stood up for myself and the crew. I told the producers that this is not okay. Maybe, I am blacklisted from that industry now, but I don't care. I just believe in standing up for what's right."

She recalled how, after October, she wasn't fully living in India — flying in for shoots while also working on international projects and completing her college studies in London. She said, "I wasn't as present as I could have been. There's a perception that I went and came back, but for me, I never went away, I was always working, just in a different country. After October released, I graduated and I shot for at least 3 projects in a year – in Hollywood and South. I got work from all different parts of the world, maybe not much from Bollywood. I would have been filthy rich if I moved to India at that time. I remember many producers telling me we wanted you after October in so and so film, but we didn't know where to find you. It works that way in Bollywood, if you're out of sight, then out of mind."
For the unversed, Deepika was supposed to star opposite Prabhas in Spirit. However, according to reports, the actor's demands — including a share in the film's profits, an eight-hour working day, and more — didn't sit well with the filmmaker, leading to her exit from the project. The film now stars Triptii Dimri in the lead role.
Meanwhile, Banita is currently seen in the film Detective Sherdil, starring alongside Diljit Dosanjh, Boman Irani, Diana Penty, Ratna Pathak Shah, and Chunky Panday in key roles. The comedy whodunnit, directed by Ravi Chhabriya, is available to stream on ZEE5.

Sitaare Zameen Par Box Office Day 1 Prediction: Aamir Khan starrer gets off to a slow start, earn Rs…

Superstar Aamir Khan's most anticipated film, Sitaare Zameen Par , has finally hit the theaters. Helmed by R.S. Prasanna, this film is a sequel to the 2007 blockbuster, Taare Zameen Par . As per the early reviews, the film is receiving a positive response from audiences and critics, which can be a game-changer for Aamir Khan. Early estimates predict that Sitaare Zameen Par is expected to open with big numbers. Early Prediction For Sitaare Zameen Par As per India Today, Trade analyst Taran Adarsh has mentioned that the film can show its huge growth on the word of mouth. He said, 'The box office run currently depends on word-of-mouth. Since the promotion for the film is very light, now the film's success depends only on Aamir Khan's face value. For the opening weekend, it could be around Rs 30 crore.' He further added, 'Since it's a sequel to Taare Zameen Par, and the 2007 film did really well in its time, I hope Sitaare Zameen Par works well for Aamir. While the film's numbers won't go beyond Taare Zameen Par, it should at least touch a success limit, unlike his recent movies,' Meanwhile, as per early estimates shown by trade website Sacnilk, by this time, Aamir Khan's starrer has earned Rs 1.68 crore (more to be earned). According to Sacnlink, tickets for morning shows worth 1.15 lakhs have been sold for 9542 shows of the Hindi version of Sitare Zameen Par. While tickets worth Rs 2.73 lakhs have been sold for 163 shows of the Tamil version. The tickets for 342 shows of the Telugu version cost Rs 9.84 lakhs. After all this, the advance booking of the film has earned up to Rs 6.88 crores. More about Sitare Zameen Par Sitaare Zameen Par features Genelia Deshmukh and includes ten newcomers: Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar, along with Dolly Ahluwalia , Brijendra Kala and Gurpal Singh in pivotal roles.

Detective Sherdil movie review: Diljit Dosanjh's endearing performance can't save this flat film

Detective Sherdil movie review: A billionaire is found dead. It is murder most foul. His will reveals a shocker. His fortune is split between his favourite canine and a complete outsider. Cue, shock and outrage. Enter sharp sleuth Sherdil, and the worms come wriggling out. On the suspects' list is Pankaj Bhatti's (Boman Irani) entire family, starting with wife Rajeshwari (Ratna Pathak Shah), son Angad (Sumeet Saigal) and daughter Shanti (Banita Sandhu). The dead man's driver is also under the scanner, but the family's ire is directed against Shanti's boyfriend Poorvak (Arjun Tanwar), a deaf-mute like her, who is the biggest recipient of Bhatti's generosity. There are enough adept actors in this ensemble, led by Dosanjh, for us to expect an engaging whodunit. But the treatment is flat, making the characters even flatter, as they come on to say their lines and disappear into the wings. Why, for example, is this film set in Budapest? At least that's what it seems like, and everyone races around in cars at top speed, screeching to a halt at large mansions and police stations which could be anywhere at all. The fact that Shanti is hearing-and-speech impaired, and so is her boyfriend, had the potential to lift things. As did Chunky Panday's monkish avataar. But very little sticks. It isn't as if our canny jasoos, a cross between Byomkesh and Karamchand as he describes himself pithily, is not trying his best: we get to hear him speak English which makes for a nice change from his usual Hindi/Punjabi, look slant-eyed at lithe colleague Natasha (Diana Penty) whom he has a bit of history with, play the harmonica everytime he gets a chance, and he gets them a lot, and cracking the case. Watch Detective Sherdil movie trailer here: Dosanjh is such an endearing performer that even a sub-par sit com-type script can't really keep him down, even if his voice-ever is never ending. But the others, including sundry foreigners who have been induced to play supporting parts, don't fare as well. Neither does the film. Detective Sherdil movie cast: Diljit Dosanjh, Boman Irani, Ratna Pathak Shah, Diana Penty, Sumeet Vyas, Banita Sandhu, Arjun Tanwar, Chunky Pandey Detective Sherdil movie director: Ravi Chhabriya Detective Sherdil movie rating: 1.5 stars
