South Korea's Lee Jae-myung sworn in as new president
South Korea's new president Lee Jae-myung has taken the oath of office.
He was sworn in at an abbreviated inauguration ceremony on Wednesday morning local time at the National Assembly in the capital, Seoul.
In a speech following his inauguration, he vowed to restore South Korea's flagging economy and build a bridge of reconciliation.
The new president and his liberal Democratic Party government inherit an economy that is expected to grow this year by a only 0.8%, the weakest since 2020.
It will also need to unify a country deeply polarised by impeached former President Yoon Suk Yeol's attempt to impose martial law in December, 2024.
In his speech, Lee stressed that was time to restore democracy after the "martial law crisis."
He also said he would seek dialogue with North Korea to secure peace on the Korean peninsula.
"No matter how costly, peace is better than war," he said.

Bangladesh NSA in Washington to brief US about progress on holding elections
Dhaka : Bangladesh's National Security Adviser (NSA) Khalilur Rahman on Wednesday met with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau at the State Department in Washington, DC, Bangladesh Chief Adviser's Press Wing said in a statement on Thursday. "They discussed the Rohingya issue, ongoing tariff negotiations between Bangladesh and the US, developments in South Asia, and the democratic transition in Bangladesh", the statement said. "Deputy Secretary of State lauded the leadership of Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at a critical juncture for Bangladesh and reiterated continued US support for Bangladesh", it added. "Dr. Rahman separately met Assistant US Trade Representative Brendan Lynch and had fruitful discussions on the agreement between the two countries on reciprocal tariffs", the statement said. Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power in a student-led uprising in August last year. Hasina fled to India, and an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus was formed. On June 14, Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh's interim government, hinted at holding national elections in early February next year. However, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk expressed concern over the ban on political parties in Bangladesh and stressed that the decision "unduly restricts the freedom of association, expression and assembly". He urged the Bangladesh's interim government to hold free and inclusive elections. Bangladesh's interim government earlier banned the activities of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League and its affiliated organisations. Subsequently, in May, the Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) suspended the registration of Sheikh Hasina's Awami League as a political party. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh's interim government, has hinted at holding national elections in early February next year." South Korea approves $14.7 billion second extra budget to boost economy
Seoul: South Korea will implement a second supplementary budget worth 20.2 trillion won ($14.7 billion) aimed at revitalising domestic consumption and bolstering the economy, including the distribution of cash handouts to all citizens. According to South Korea's (Yonhap) News Agency, the Ministry of Economy and Finance said in a statement on Thursday that "the supplementary budget -- the second this year and the first since President Lee Jae Myung took office two weeks ago -- was approved at a Cabinet meeting. It follows a 13.8 trillion-won extra budget passed in May and is subject to parliamentary approval." "The government will support economic revitalization by promoting consumption, encouraging investment and expanding construction spending," the ministry said in a statement. The government will inject 10.3 trillion won to provide "consumption coupons" ranging from 150,000 to 500,000 won per person, depending on income levels, the ministry said. During the January–April period, South Korea's managed fiscal balance, a stricter measure of fiscal health, recorded a deficit of 46.1 trillion won, according to government data. In 2024, the fiscal deficit exceeded 100 trillion won.
