UN Experts Call On Security Council To Protect Women And Girls In Gaza And Restore Peace
GENEVA (21 May 2025) – The UN Security Council must urgently address Israel's unprecedented assault on civilians in Gaza and reaffirm its commitments to the Women, Peace and Security agenda, a group of independent human rights experts* said today.
'Ahead of the Council's open debate on civilian protection under Greece's presidency, we urge meaningful discussion of the grave and gendered impacts of the unfolding genocide on women and girls in the besieged Gaza Strip,' the experts said.
The experts stressed that attacks have shattered every aspect of civilian life, with distinctly gendered consequences, and that Palestinian girls and women of all ages have suffered in staggering numbers, while Israel continues to deny critical humanitarian access. They noted that over 28,000 women and girls have been killed, thousands have been injured and nearly 1 million displaced. Close to 13,000 women are now single heads of households. The entire population is still confronted with a critical risk of famine. Nearly 71,000 children and 17,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women will need urgent treatment for acute malnutrition in the immediate future.
Women continue to mourn profound losses while caring for families with little to no access to water, medicine, adequate food, sanitary products, or sexual and reproductive health care. Women and girls with disabilities face especially acute risks - disproportionately experiencing neglect, heightened exposure to violence, and significant barriers in accessing essential services, the experts noted.
'The destruction of civilian infrastructure and profound suffering inflicted on women and girls demands immediate and sustained action by the Security Council,' the experts said. 'The devastation experienced by women, girls, and entire communities is not incidental – it is the consequence of intentional policies and actions by Israel. The killings of thousands of women and girls may constitute the deliberate infliction of conditions of life calculated to bring about the physical destruction, in whole or in part, of the Palestinian people.'
The experts noted that while Palestinian women and girls in Gaza are victims of this indiscriminate and disproportionate military assault, women, as journalists, medical workers, teachers, lawyers, and aid workers, continue to care, document, and resist despite unbearable losses.
'Girls and other children report walking long distances for remote learning, even as they fear bombings along the way. They cling to uniforms and books, still hoping to return to classrooms—even when those spaces are no longer safe,' the experts said.
Reiterating their repeated calls for a permanent ceasefire and the need for protection and accountability measures, the experts urged the Council to respond to the specific gendered impacts of the crisis. Women, Peace and Security commitments, they noted, must not be sidelined from core peace and security discussions.
'In Gaza, the rules of engagement and fundamental protections owed to civilians have been intentionally, persistently and flagrantly violated,' the experts warned. 'If the Security Council fails to confront this profound breakdown in compliance and accountability, and what it means for humanity and multilateralism, the very foundations of international law risk becoming meaningless.'

Mahmoud Khalil vows to continue protesting Israel, war in Gaza after release from detention
A Palestinian activist who was detained for more than three months pushed his infant son's stroller with one hand and cheered as he was welcomed home today by supporters including US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Mahmoud Khalil greeted friends and spoke briefly to reporters at New Jersey's Newark International Airport a day after leaving a federal immigration facility in Louisiana. A former Columbia University graduate student and symbol of President Donald Trump's clampdown on campus protests, he vowed to continue protesting Israel and the war in Gaza. 'The US government is funding this genocide, and Columbia University is investing in this genocide,' he said. 'This is why I will continue to protest with every one of you. Not only if they threaten me with detention. Even if they would kill me, I would still speak up for Palestine.' Joining Khalil at the airport, Ocasio-Cortez said his detention violated the First Amendment and was 'an affront to every American'. 'He has been accused, baselessly, of horrific allegations simply because the Trump administration and our overall establishment disagrees with his political speech,' she said. Khalil was not accused of breaking any laws during the protests at Columbia. UN Chief ‘Gravely Alarmed' By US Bombing Of Iranian Nuclear Sites
"I am gravely alarmed by the use of force by the United States against Iran today,' said the UN chief, reiterating that there is no military solution. ' This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security.' President Donald Trump delivered a televised address to the nation from the White House at 10pm local time and said that Iran's nuclear facilities at Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan had been 'totally obliterated' describing the long-range bombing raid as a 'spectacular military success.' President Trump called on Iran's leadership to now 'make peace' and return to negotiations over its nuclear programme or suffer a far greater wave of attacks. Iranian authorities have yet to confirm the extent of the damage to the three sites in central Iran. Earlier in the day, Iran's foreign minister reportedly warned the US against any involvement in the Iran-Israel conflict which erupted on 13 June. Deadly strikes At least 430 Iranians are believed to have been killed during waves of strikes since then with around 3,500 injured, according to figures from the Iranian health ministry. In Israel, 24 civilians have died in the retaliatory attacks according to local authorities with more than 400 missiles reportedly fired towards the country. B-2 bombers were involved in the US strikes, President Trump confirmed, dropping so-called 'bunker buster' bombs on the uranium enrichment site at Fordow which is buried deep inside a mountain south of the capital Tehran. 'Avoid a spiral of chaos' In his statement, the Secretary-General reiterated his concerns voiced in the Security Council during Friday's emergency meeting on the crisis that the conflict 'could rapidly get out of control – with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world.' He called on all Member States to de-escalate the situation which threatens the stability of the Middle East and beyond, calling for everyone to uphold their obligations under the UN Charter and international law. ' At this perilous hour, it is critical to avoid a spiral of chaos,' he added calling for an immediate return to negotiations between the warring parties. ' There is no military solution. The only path forward is diplomacy. The only hope is peace.'

Sumud: The Unyielding Heart Of The Palestinian Cause In Gaza
The profound and unrelenting struggles endured by Palestinians should, by any rational expectation, have irrevocably concluded the Palestinian cause. Yet, the struggle for freedom in Palestine is at its zenith. How is one to explain this? Attempts aimed at the erasure of Palestine, the Palestinian people, and their cause go back well over a century. This encompasses the historical and ongoing impacts of the Balfour Declaration and the subsequent Mandate period, which ushered in an era of extreme violence, systemic suppression, and the imposition of harsh emergency regulations. The devastating Nakba - the catastrophic destruction of the Palestinian homeland - was followed by the enactment of new emergency laws and the widespread dispersal of several Palestinian generations into the Shattat (diaspora). A relentless cycle of constant war, new occupations, and persistent ethnic cleansing has been further compounded by a pervasive lack of international action and sustained Arab solidarity, exacerbated by the presence of corrupt Palestinian elites. This litany of suffering extends to countless Israeli massacres, escalating violence, the relentless expansion of settlements, widespread destruction, and the recurring demolition of homes. The protracted Gaza siege, marked by war after war, has now culminated in the ongoing genocide. Yet, despite this comprehensive and overwhelming accumulation of adversities, the Palestinian cause not only endures but persists with an unwavering spirit. This remarkable and enduring resilience is most profoundly understood through the concept of sumud. The Indomitable Spirit of Sumud Sumud transcends mere steadfastness; it represents a profound and deeply ingrained cultural phenomenon rooted in defiance, historical consciousness, unwavering faith, spirituality, the strength of family bonds, and the cohesion of community. The language of sumud is remarkably pervasive and rich, manifesting eloquently in poetry, intricate storytelling, Quranic verses, and the compelling terminology of revolution. Words such as sumud itself, Muqawama (resistance), Hurriyya (freedom), Thawra (revolution), Hatta Akher Nuqtat Dum (to the last drop of blood), and even the very word Falasteen (Palestine) are imbued with profound and multifaceted significance. For countless children growing up in Gaza, like myself, the simple, yet powerful, act of writing the word Falasteen on sand, in every text book, or on one's own hand serves as a foundational and deeply personal experience. Therefore, any truly genuine comprehension of Palestine must be meticulously shaped by the authentic language and the lived experiences of Palestinians themselves, with particular emphasis on those residing in Gaza. This imperative necessitates a deliberate shift in focus, moving away from historical documents like the Balfour Declaration or the Nation-State Law. Instead, understanding must authentically emerge from the narratives of pivotal figures such as Izz al-Din al-Qassam, Abdul Qader al-Husseini, Akram Zeiter, and Ghassan Kanafani, extending all the way to the fighting Palestinians in Gaza, their innocent children, their courageous journalists, their dedicated doctors, and their ordinary people. Gaza: The Unyielding Heart of the Palestinian Story One might be inclined to perceive this perspective as sentimental. However, it stands as a clear articulation of a long-held conviction that Gaza occupies the indisputable core of the Palestinian story, its historical trajectory, and its future destiny. This is not an emotional plea but a profound recognition of a harsh and unyielding living reality: Gaza has borne the brunt of the most severe manifestations of Israeli occupation, apartheid, siege, war, violence, ethnic cleansing, and genocide. Crucially, it is also the place where resistance has never ceased, not for a single moment. This fact alone is sufficient to establish Gaza as the most critical and undeniable component in the entire intricate history of the so-called conflict. The Israeli genocide unfolding in Gaza is not merely an act of collective punishment. Rather, it originates from a deeply distorted and chilling Israeli perception of reality: that the Palestinian people themselves, and not a specific ideology, a particular group of individuals, or a defined organization, constitute the very heart and soul of the Palestinian cause. Consequently, the perceived sole method for thoroughly decimating the resistance is through the mass killing of the people and the subsequent ethnic cleansing of the survivors. If Israel, in its twisted and profoundly criminal way, has managed to grasp this horrifying understanding, then it becomes equally imperative that we, too, fully comprehend this fundamental concept. Forging a New Understanding of Palestine Therefore, a new and transformative understanding of Palestine is not just desirable but absolutely imperative. This understanding must unequivocally center Palestinian voices that genuinely reflect the sentiments, wishes, feelings, aspirations, and the authentic popular politics of ordinary people. It is crucial that not just any Palestinian voice will suffice, nor will any narrative do. This deliberate and focused approach will also help to liberate the word sumud, and all adjacent terminology, from being dismissed as merely fleeting sentimental language, thereby elevating it to the very heart of our collective discourse. Palestinians, like all native populations engaged in a just struggle for freedom, should be unequivocally entrusted with the custodianship of their own discourse. They are not a liability to that discourse; they are not marginal actors within it; they are, in fact, the undeniable main characters. Within an astonishing 600 days, Palestinians in Gaza, largely cut off, isolated, and targeted for extermination, have managed to expose Zionism more comprehensively and effectively than all the cumulative work undertaken over the course of an entire century. This monumental achievement, too, is a direct byproduct of their profound sumud. It is now time to critically revisit our language of solidarity with Palestine, consciously liberating it from our own ideological, political, and often personal priorities, and decisively reshaping it based solely on the authentic priorities of the Palestinians themselves.
