Four crew members injured as Robert Shwartzman in wild Indy 500 crash

The Indianapolis 500 had its fair share of dramatics, but none were quite as shocking as Robert Shwartzman's scary crash.
The rookie Russian-Israeli driver came into the race with high hopes after his qualifying time earned him the pole position last week.

But while pulling into his stall 87 laps in, Shwartzman lost control of his car and went sliding into four of his pit crew members.
'Honestly, it felt really strange — my brakes — already when I was going slow coming in the pit lane. I locked both front tires, which usually is not the case,' Shwartzman later said. 'I wasn't sure if it was the brakes or because the tires were cold … I tried to be very slow. But as soon as I touched my brakes, my whole front just locks and I just went right into the guys.'
Shwartzman's red, green and white car became fully out of his control.
'It was really scary,' Shwartzman said. 'At the moment I braked, I was just a passenger.'
The wreck ended Shwartzman's chances of finishing the Indy 500.
One of the crew members who was struck by Shwartzman's car had to be taken away in a stretcher.

While the crew member's injuries are unclear at this time, Shwartzman seemed relieved at the outcome of what could have been a tragic accident.
'Luckily nobody got really, hardly injured, I think there is only one guy who had a bit of an injury,' the driver said. 'I'm happy that everybody is fine.'
Shwartzman had made headlines with his performance ahead of the Indy 500, as the Prema Racing driver became the first rookie to take the pole position since 1983.
Shwartzman wasn't alone in dramatic bow-outs, as fellow drivers Alexander Rossi and Rinus Veekay also had car problems that forced them out of the race.

Scott McLaughlin, who many had high hopes for in the race, also fizzled out as he crashed in the pace lap before the green flag had even waved.
'It's just really sad,' Shwartzman said. 'We did such good work in qualifying. But it's the Indy 500, anything can happen. A lot of strong drivers are out of the race or behind. This is what happens, this is Indy.'
Spaniard Alex Palou took home the checkered flag for his first Indianapolis 500.

With that comes a larger purse, and additional FedEx Cup and Ryder Cup points. After the third round of Travelers Championship, Bradley is in great position to make up some of the ground needed. He is tied for second, three shots back of Tommy Fleetwood. Following his round, Bradley expressed how Sunday is going to be special for more than one reason. It marks exactly one year since Bradley got the call to lead Team USA as captain. "Tomorrow's the year anniversary of getting the call for the Ryder Cup," he said. "Pretty crazy that we're a year out, but special day tomorrow—could be even better." Bradley knows he's in rare territory. Prior to Palmer's captaincy more than a half-century ago, playing captains were commonplace. "No one has ever experienced what I'm going through right now," he admitted. "Arnold Palmer did in 1962 (1963*), I think it was, but most captains are done playing or on the Champions Tour. Adames scores twice in Reign's 4-1 win over struggling Royals

Associated Press Emeri Adames scored two goals in the second half and the Seattle Reign beat the Utah Royals 4-1 in the National Women's Soccer League on Saturday. It was the first multi-goal game of Adames' career, and at 19 years and 79 days old, she became the second-youngest player to ever score two goals in an NWSL match. Elsewhere in the NWSL on Saturday, Gotham FC beat Bay FC 2-1 at home, the North Carolina Courage won 2-1 at home against the Houston Dash, and the Portland Thorns edged the Chicago Stars 1-0 to stay undefeated at Providence Park. At America First Field in Utah, the Reign (6-4-3) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Ji So-Yun scored from 14 yards out after a headed pass from Maddie Dahlien in the sixth minute. Ji then returned the favor and played Dahlien through on goal for the Reign's second goal in the 16th. Bianca St-Georges scored for the Royals in the 31st as the Canadian forward tapped in from close range after Ally Sentnor's strike rebounded off the post. Penelope Hocking put Bay up 1-0 in the 11th minute. Hocking latched onto a looping pass from Hannah Bebar and poked the ball past Ann-Katrin Berger in the Gotham goal. Gonzalez got Gotham's equalizer in the 29th when she pounced on a loose pass in the box by Alyssa Malonson. Geyse netted the winning goal for Gotham in the 55th. Nealy Martin found the Brazilian with a bending 40-yard long pass out of the defense. It was a second straight loss for Bay (4-6-3). The San Jose-based team has lost all three of its meetings with Gotham since joining the NWSL in 2024. Befort completes comeback for Courage Hannah Betfort scored the winning goal in North Carolina's comeback victory. Avery Patterson put Houston ahead 1-0 in the opening minute of the match. The deflected strike from inside the box came after just 52 seconds and was the fastest goal in Dash history. Acting head coach Nathan Thackeray made a triple substitution in the 66th minute, putting Jaedyn Shaw, Ashley Sanchez and Betfort into the game. Dash midfielder Sarah Puntigam was sent off for a second yellow card for a foul on Shaw in the 70th. Shaw scored the equalizer with a simple finish from the center of the box in the 71st. The goal was Shaw's first for the Courage since joining this past offseason. From scandal to strategy: Kyle Moyer's new role at Arrow McLaren Racing

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Kyle Moyer, one of the three Team Penske executives fired during an Indianapolis 500 scandal, has been hired by Arrow McLaren Racing and will be with the IndyCar team this coming week for a test session at Iowa Speedway. Moyer was hand-selected to join McLaren by team principal Tony Kanaan. The two won the 2004 IndyCar championship together at Andretti Global. Moyer was Kanaan's team manager at the time. At McLaren, Moyer will be the director of competition and assist Scott Harner, who is the director of race operations. He will also replace Kanaan as strategist for Nolan Siegel, freeing Kanaan to work on race day with all three McLaren drivers. Moyer's official start date is June 30. Kanaan said almost the entire industry tried to hire Moyer after his May firing at Penske, but the previous relationship between Moyer and Kanaan gave McLaren the edge. 'Kyle is one of the best strategists in the paddock, so talking about his qualities, not just about him as a human being, he knows a lot about racing,' Kanaan told The Associated Press. 'Kyle probably is one of the top guys of knowledge of IndyCar — he's been around it his entire life. 'And Kyle is a people person, he's that kind of guy that captivates people and people want to work for Kyle,' Kanaan continued. 'At the same time, he is very direct and he will call you out and he makes it so every person I've ever seen working for Kyle wanted to work for Kyle. That's something that I experienced in my career and that is probably the biggest thing. The respect that I have for the guy is unbelievable.' Moyer's popularity was evident when Penske driver Scott McLaughlin lashed out after the trio of firings ahead of the Indy 500 . Moyer was let go along with team president Tim Cindric, a 25-year Penske employee, and managing director Ron Ruzewski. Moyer was Penske's general manager of the IndyCar program and the strategist for McLaughlin's car. The firings followed the discovery that the cars of Josef Newgarden and Will Power had illegally modified rear attenuators; Cindric said seams on the safety part had been sealed for aesthetic purposes, but the rulebook clearly stated no alterations could be made to the part. It was the second major technical violation for Penske cars in just over a year and team owner Roger Penske was left with no choice but to fire his top three executives. Penske owns the three-car race team, the IndyCar Series, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500. 'Ultimately, those three guys are friends of mine and have done a tremendous amount in my career to get me to this point,' McLaughlin said in May after the firings. 'I guess you could say there's a sadness from my perspective. At the end of the day I drive for Roger Penske. I respect the decision. I understand the decision. We move forward.' Kanaan said he was shocked that Moyer did not have a non-compete clause and was available to McLaren immediately. He believes Moyer will be a help to Siegel, the 20-year-old in his first full season of IndyCar. Siegel heads into Sunday's race at Road America in Wisconsin ranked 21st in the standings.
