His unbeaten 87 in Qualifier 2 against Mumbai Indians is now among the standout individual knocks of IPL 2025.In white-ball finals, Iyer has amassed 413 runs across 10 games with an average of 51.62. His highest score came in the 2018-19 Deodhar Trophy final, when he made 148 for India B. He played supporting roles in India's 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2017-18 Deodhar Trophy triumphs.In red-ball cricket, Iyer's impact has been no different. His 117 in the 2015-16 Ranji final helped Mumbai clinch the title. In the 2023-24 final, he scored a vital 95 in the second innings. Now with Punjab Kings, a franchise often labelled as underachievers, he has guided them to a final after a decade-long wait.His run to this final has not been without setbacks. After being excluded from BCCI's central contracts in 2023-24, Iyer returned with performances in domestic cricket, including wins in the Ranji Trophy, SMAT, and Irani Cup for Mumbai. Indian cricket has been divided into heroes over the last five decades. From Sunil Gavaskar, the baton passed to Sachin Tendulkar, then Virat Kohli, and, if the hype is to be believed, now Gill. India's newly crowned Test captain, Gill, started off the tour of England on a blazing note, scoring a defiant half-century when India had lost two wickets in two overs before lunch. An elated Shastri, in the commentary box, seemed over the moon watching one of his discoveries on the fast track to success. Gill was the Player of the tournament as India won the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand seven years ago. The former India head coach recalled being blown away watching Gill and urged the BCCI not to waste time in giving him a chance with the senior team. That is when Gill made a lot of heads turn. He just seemed to have time, more than anyone else, as he bludgeoned through the likes of Pakistan and Australia. And he's not the kind who changes his approach because it comes naturally to him. There's no doubting his talent. When he came on the scene, everyone knew that here's a player who's going to be around for a decade. There's no doubt about that. I remember seeing him for the first time when I was the coach and he was batting in the nets. He came out to bat and I went to the other coaches and said 'Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Who is this bloke? Get him in." Gill's India debut About a year later, Gill made his India debut during an ODI series in New Zealand, just a couple of months before the 2019 World Cup. Gill then made his Test debut in the Boxing Day Test match against Australia at the MCG and scored an unbeaten 48 as India completed a famous win after their infamous 36 all out in Adelaide. "He had that regal element about him. Just the way he played, and the shots he possessed. Especially against the quicks and the bouncing ball. He started off well during the Under-19 World Cup when Rahul [Dravid] was the coach. And just came through the ranks nicely," added Shastri. It's a challenge in itself when someone comes through, and everyone says this is the future of the country. More so in India, where expectations go through the roof. For all the pieces of the puzzle, Gill seems to have come through nicely. Having made it in the ODIs, he's now grinding it out in Test set-up.

Iyer, who recently led the Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the IPL 2025 final and then captained the SoBo Mumbai Falcons in the T20 Mumbai League, found himself on the losing side in two consecutive high-stakes matches. Despite a stellar run with PBKS, who topped the IPL league table with nine wins and 19 points, Iyer's side fell agonisingly short in the title clash, losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru by just six runs. He returned to domestic action almost immediately, turning out for the SoBo Mumbai Falcons in the T20 Mumbai League. The Falcons, guided by Iyer's experienced leadership, reached the final but were defeated by Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals by five wickets — adding another near-miss to Iyer's summer. BCCI Blasted For Favouritism As Domestic Star Misses Out On Debut In 1st Test
The first installment of Sai Sudharsan 's Test debut lasted just four balls as he was dismissed by England captain Ben Stokes on the stroke of Lunch in the first Test in Leeds on Friday. Sudharsan nicked a delivery which was going down the leg, and England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith did the rest, leaping wonderfully to his right and grabbed the ball with both hands. It was not the ideal start for Sudharsan and his wicket also allowed England to peg India back after a great start to the opening day of a long tour. While it is too early to judge Sudharsan after just one failure, fans were not happy with his inclusion in the team in the very first place. Sudharsan's debut came at the expense of Bengal captain Abhimanyu Easwaran, who was once again overlooked despite piling runs in Domestic cricket. Easwaran received his maiden call up in 2022 but is yet to make his India debut. Fans, however, slammed the BCCI for giving prefence to IPL talents. Rahul (42) and Jaiswal (42 not out) made the England attack look pedestrian until the former and debutant B Sai Sudharsan (0) got out in the final moments of the first session. Stokes' decision to bowl first might have stemmed from the transformed nature of Headingley track which has become a batter's ally in the last decade, and that character was visible in the first session of the match itself. There was a hint of movement and swing for the pacers, but the Indian openers were well up to the task on a largely sunny morning. An England attack that did not have either James Anderson or Stuart Broad in its roster did not seem to have the ammunition to trouble the Indian batters on a rather flaccid pitch. The unit consisting of Stokes himself, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue and Chris Woakes either bowled too full for Rahul and Jaiswal to bring out their drives, or were on pads for the batters to milk them for some easy singles.
