New Stellantis CEO Filosa makes small changes to management, shares fall

Stellantis' new CEO Antonio Filosa will retain his previous role as head of the key North American market as he broadly confirmed on Monday the French-Italian carmaker's senior management team on his first day in the job.
Trading in Stellantis' shares was briefly suspended after they fell more than 5% at the opening. They were down 1.8% by 9.10am GMT, among the worst performers in Italy's blue-chip index.
Analysts at Jefferies said Filosa's decision to keep direct responsibility for the North American business, however logical, was also 'suggesting that revamping Stellantis may not be a full-time job'.
Stellantis shares have fallen 10% since Filosa's appointment at the end of May, with investors disappointed that an insider was picked after a six-month search to replace Carlos Tavares to revive the carmaker's profits, the US business and share price.
The global car sector is also struggling with aggressive competition from China, especially in electric vehicles, the impact of US President Donald Trump's import tariffs, as well as regulatory uncertainties.
'In this context, these internal choices for the CEO position and then for top management do not offer a catalyst for short-term investors to buy,' said Massimo Baggiani, founder at Niche Asset Management in London, which sold Stellantis shares last year.
The new executive team has 16 direct reports to Filosa, compared with up to 33 under Tavares, who stepped down in December. All promoted managers were internal.
A source familiar with the matter said Filosa's decision to retain the North American business leadership stemmed from his commitment to continue the job he started about nine months ago to revamp the region, which has been at the core of Stellantis' recent problems. He also wanted to continue to manage the effects of US tariffs, the source added.
Filosa, who turns 52 on Thursday, will for now be based mainly in Detroit.
In February, under the steer of chair John Elkann, the world's fourth-largest carmaker by sales launched a wide management shake-up, which started to cut ties with the Tavares era.
CFO Doug Ostermann and technology and engineering chief Ned Curic, two key figures in the group's organisation, were confirmed in their roles, with Ostermann also taking charge of mergers and acquisitions and joint ventures, the company said on Monday.
Jean-Philippe Imparato will continue to lead Stellantis' European business.
Maxime Picat, the group's chief purchasing and supplier quality officer, who also applied for the CEO job and is now seen as a candidate to succeed Luca De Meo as CEO of Renault, has left Stellantis, the company said.
His functions will be taken by Scott Thiele in a dedicated and newly-created role of head of supply chain and Monica Genovese, who was appointed head of purchasing.

Closing the waterway would be "extremely dangerous", Kaja Kallas, the European Union's top diplomat, said on Monday. AFP looks at the two scenarios and their possible implications. - Strait of Hormuz - AFP | Jonathan WALTER, Valentina BRESCHI The narrow, U-shaped seaway snaking between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula is the gateway for Gulf energy shipments to global markets, carrying one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas exports. Closing the 50-kilometre (30-mile) wide channel could spike oil to $120 a barrel, according to Deutsche Bank research, raising prices of transport, food and utilities around the world. "It's in the best interest of all Middle Eastern countries to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and prevent any supply disruption," Rystad Energy senior analyst Lu Ming Pang wrote last week. Currently, traders do not appear too concerned. Brent crude was trading at $76 on Monday, marginally changed from Friday's close. "Looking at the oil price this morning, it is clear that the oil market doesn't assign a very high probability of (a closure) happening," said Bjarne Schieldrop, chief commodities analyst at SEB bank. The big question is whether Iran is prepared to detonate this economic hand-grenade. Despite threats in the past, including in 2011 as oil sanctions loomed, it has not pulled the pin. Kuwait, in a legacy of the 1990 Gulf war, houses about 13,500 US forces, while the biggest US base in the region is Al Udeid in Qatar. The US Fifth Fleet, covering the Gulf, Red Sea and parts of the Indian Ocean, is based in Bahrain, and about 3,500 US personnel are stationed at Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates. In Iraq, US troops are deployed in various installations, including the Al-Asad and Arbil air bases, as part of an anti-jihadist coalition. Iran-backed Iraqi armed factions have threatened Washington's interests should it join Israel's campaign, having targeted them in previous years. Increased US involvement in the Iran-Israel war risks attacks "on US interests, US bases and such across the region", said Renad Mansour, senior research fellow at Chatham House. "The US attack on Iran has now meant that this war is between Israel, the United States and Iran, which means that across the region, Iran may seek to target the US," he added. However, this option is also fraught for Iran as it risks isolating itself from the powerful Gulf monarchies that enjoy good relations with Washington. "Tehran is unlikely to strike Gulf Arab states," said Andreas Krieg, a senior lecturer at King's College London. "Even as it sees the UAE and Saudi Arabia as quiet enablers of the US-Israeli axis, Iran understands that any attack on their soil would likely unify them against it and open the door for greater American military presence. The US carried out strikes against Iranian nuclear sites overnight on Saturday to Sunday, after over a week of deadly missile exchanges between Israel and Iran. Among the group of major airlines that have adjusted their flight schedule was Emirates. They have temporarily suspended flights to Iran and Iraq, which will affect passengers with connections to those countries via Dubai. In a statement released yesterday, the airline said: "Due to the regional situation, Emirates has temporarily suspended all flights to Iran (Tehran) and Iraq (Baghdad and Basra), until and including Monday 30 June 2025. "We are operating as scheduled to all other destinations. Germany's Lufthansa Group, whose other airlines include Swiss, Austrian, and ITA, has suspended flights to the Middle East until June 30. The Amman and Erbil, Iraq, routes were also suspended until July 11. The group will not fly to Tel Aviv and Tehran until July 31, and is also avoiding the airspace of countries involved in the conflict. Greece's Aegean Airlines has stopped Tel Aviv flights until July 12. Its Amman, Beirut, and Erbil routes are closed until June 28. Turkish airline Pegasus has scrapped flights to Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon until June 30, and Iran until July 30. No Turkish Airlines flights to Baghdad, Damascus and Tehran are available before July 1. United Airlines has warned passengers that flights to and from Dubai scheduled between June 18 and July 3 may be affected and was offering no-fee ticket changes under certain conditions due to the Middle East unrest. The US airline has implemented the same flexibility for Tel Aviv flights between June 13 and August 1, allowing customers to rebook for other major European cities. Air Canada has temporarily suspended its daily non-stop service from Toronto to Dubai starting June 18 and warned that the suspension could be extended. The global art market is not immune to current economic and geopolitical tensions, and is counting on a new generation of collectors to revitalise the momentum. Some big transactions were concluded last week during Art Basel, the world's top contemporary art fair, notably by London's Annely Juda Fine Art gallery, which sold a David Hockney painting for between $13 million and $17 million, without disclosing the exact price. The David Zwirner gallery sold a sculpture by Ruth Asawa for $9.5 million and a Gerhard Richter painting for $6.8 million. However, prices did not reach the heights achieved in 2022, when the art market was in full swing. Back then, a sculpture by French-American artist Louise Bourgeois was purchased for $40 million. "The market is certainly softer," Art Basel's chief executive Noah Horowitz told AFP, though major sales still happen at such fairs "despite, somehow, all that's going on in the world". Switzerland's biggest bank UBS and the research and consulting firm Arts Economics prepared a report for the fair. According to their estimates, the art market slowed in 2023, then fell by 12 percent globally in 2024, to $57.5 billion, with the decline particularly affecting works valued at more than $10 million. In the art sector, behaviour is "more conservative" among both buyers and sellers, who prefer to wait before putting works on the market in the current climate, he continues. "The number of transactions is increasing," but in "lower price segments," he noted.
