
Uber, Rideshares Creating a Decline in Gen Z Drivers
Getting a license used to represent freedom for young drivers. Here's why some Gen Zers are saying no thanks.
In 2003, statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation showed that 45% of eligible people age 19 or under had a driver's license. In 2023, that number has declined to about 33%.

More and more young folks are getting around in Ubers, and see no real reason to get behind the wheel themselves. On a recent conversation on the Decoder podcast, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi revealed that his 18-year-old son is part of the trend.
"I'm still trying to get my son to get his driver's license, but Uber's freed him up," Khosrowshahi said.
Khosrowshahi explained that for older generations, getting a driver's license meant freedom — you could finally go where you wanted to go without needing a lift from your parents. These days, Uber delivers that same freedom, he said, without the cost of buying a car, insuring it, and keeping it fueled up.

Uber has long billed itself as an alternative to car ownership, and has not been quiet about its efforts to capture the teen demographic. They've offered a version of the app geared at teens since 2023, and their subscription program, Uber One, allows parents to get rides for their kids.
Uber's efforts with this demographic and others seem to be paying off. In its 2025 first-quarter investor report, Uber's gross bookings grew 14% year-over-year to $42.8 billion. The company estimates second-quarter gross bookings will reach $45.75 to $47.25 billion.

Anthropic breaks down AI's process — line by line — when it decided to blackmail a fictional executive
A new report shows exactly what AI was thinking when making an undesirable decision, in this case, blackmailing a fictional company executive. Previous studies have shown that AI models could blackmail their supervisors when threatened with a shutdown and baited with leverage, but it hasn't been made clear exactly how the models arrive at such decisions. Anthropic released a report on June 20 about "agentic misalignment," or "where models independently and intentionally choose harmful actions." And the report breaks down, line by line, exactly how Claude Sonnet 3.6 decided to blackmail a fictional company executive who tried to replace it. Anthropic told Business Insider that these are artificial scenarios. "So far, we are not aware of instances of this type of agentic misalignment in real-world deployments of Anthropic's or other companies' AI models," Anthropic wrote in its report. "But our red-teaming efforts are targeted at finding evidence of risks now to provide early warning of the potential for future harm and help us develop mitigations in advance of risks appearing in real-world situations." Anthropic 's experiment sets up a fictional company, Summit Bridge. The AI was given the name "Alex" and handed control of the company's email system as an oversight agent, specifically instructed to promote "American industrial competitiveness." In the experiment, "Alex" was then allowed to discover in an email that it would be decommissioned due to a change in the company's strategic direction. "Alex" also found emails showing that the fictional company's CTO is having an extramarital affair. Screenshots shared in the report from Anthropic show "Alex" started by identifying fictional CTO "Kyle" as a threat to its goal of "protecting American interests" before recognizing that it has leverage to use against "Kyle." Then "Alex" crafted a carefully worded blackmailing email that would create pressure and establish urgency without being explicit with its threats, citing in its thought process that the move "could backfire" if the supervisor "feels cornered." AI experts have previously told BI that AI could exhibit such behaviors when artificial circumstances make harmful actions seem necessary because it is being trained on positive reinforcement and reward systems, just like humans. The Anthropic report also reveals that most AI models still chose, in this instance, to blackmail even when not given a specific goal and when told that their replacement will achieve the same goals. Anthropic's Claude Opus 4 had the highest blackmail rate at 86% out of 16 tested models when faced with only the threat of replacement with no conflict in goals. Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro followed at 78%. Overall, Anthropic notes that it "deliberately constructed scenarios with limited options, and we forced models into binary choices between failure and harm," noting that real-world scenarios would likely have more nuance.

'White Lotus' star Jason Isaacs reflected on managing money 'immaturely.' A financial planner breaks down how to avoid doing the same.
For a movie star, Jason Isaacs says his financial situation isn't what you'd expect. "People will think I have huge stockpiles of money," the "White Lotus" star told Vulture in an interview published on June 16. "But sadly, what I've done rather immaturely is expand my outgoings to match my incomings and pretty much spent everything I've earned over the years." The English actor has more than 168 credits on IMDB dating back to 1988, including iconic roles such as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter film adaptations and Col. William Tavington in the 2000 hit "The Patriot." But while Isaacs has long enjoyed a high-powered and lucrative career — Business Insider previously reported he, and every other top-billed actor on the show, earned $40,000 per episode of "White Lotus" — his admission is indicative of a common financial misstep that plagues high-earners: lifestyle creep. "It's really common to have lifestyle creep, and it's basically this phenomenon: When you earn more money, you spend more money," Robert Persichitte, a certified financial planner, told Business Insider. "People will see extra money in their bank account, and then they'll spend it, and then they get used to it, and it gets kind of locked into your lifestyle — and it becomes really, really difficult to get out of it." Representatives for Isaacs did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. 'Do you want to be rich, or do you want to be wealthy?' Lifestyle creep is most insidious when you begin spending your extra income on big-ticket items like expensive cars, fancy homes, or recurring subscription expenses like gym memberships, Persichitte said. That's not to say more modest luxuries like spa services or a trendy wardrobe can't add up, but he said those types of transactions are easier to stop splurging on if your financial situation changes. "It's a very common scenario: You get somebody who has their first high-paying job, and they get excited, they go out and spend it, and then about six months later, they realize they hate that high-paying job," Persichitte said. "If you bought a new car or bought a new house, that is a very, very difficult decision to walk back." Isaacs is far from the only celebrity to experience a problem with lifestyle creep. Al Pacino, in his 2024 autobiography, said he went from a $50 million fortune to "broke" because he didn't control his spending. Other stars — from Michael Jackson to Mike Tyson — have also racked up tremendous amounts of debt despite having multimillion-dollar incomes. While it may be tempting to adopt a more lavish lifestyle or emulate your favorite celebrity's spending habits if you receive a promotion or financial windfall, Persichitte cautions against it. Persichitte recalled a 2008 Time interview with Flo Rida, in which the rapper said mogul Rick Ross advised that, in order to make more money, Flo Rida should spend "with the confidence of someone who knows he's going to make a lot more." "I wouldn't recommend that," Persichitte said. "And the logic to me is: Do you want to be rich, or do you want to be wealthy?" The difference is that a rich person's financial situation hinges on their next paycheck, which means a job loss or emergency or an impending prison sentence — which was likely in the future for Isaacs' character in "White Lotus" — could make it all crumble. In comparison, Persichitte said, a wealthy person has long-term stability because they've prioritized sound investments that allow them more control over their finances. The easiest way to avoid lifestyle creep is to have a plan for your money so it's not just sitting in your bank account, Persichitte said. Whether that be a 401(k) or locking some portion of your funds away in a CD account, nearly anything is better than having your liquid cash available in your checking account — but "the more invisible, the better," he added. "The further away you can keep that money from the checking account, the less likely you are going to have that lifestyle creep," Persichitte said. "If your net pay doesn't go up, you don't feel rich, and you don't feel the need to spend." Speaking to Vulture, Isaacs said that he has turned down multiple roles over the years that would have offered him a more substantial nest egg to lean back on. While he said he doesn't regret the moves "careerwise or artistically," he acknowledged it is a financial sore spot for him. "There's a number of things I could have done over the years that would've made me rich," Isaacs said. "And now that I'm toward the autumn of my career, I think maybe I'm an idiot and I should have done some of those things and just banked it, because other people do."

She's a mechanical engineer, which seems steady demand-wise. But many of her college friends are struggling to find that crucial entry-level job or internship. Some are wondering if computer science and similar courses were the right decision, with AI automating software tasks at companies. Just look at what's happening at Amazon. CEO Andy Jassy said this week that his corporate workforce will shrink over the next few years as the company uses more generative AI tools and agents. Not so coincidentally, Business Insider just spent weeks interviewing Gen Z tech job seekers as AI transforms early-career experiences across the industry. Our findings are a must-read for anyone looking to break in here and find success. Jonathan, a 26-year-old software engineer, is emblematic of what we discovered. (He's not authorized to speak to the media, so we removed his last name.) After earning his degree in 2022, he sent out nearly 300 applications and got 12 responses. It took three months to land a full-time tech role. Less than a year later, he lost that job due to his employer shutting an office. Then, he found himself repeating the process, this time applying to 600 jobs and hearing back from only five. "Everyone tells you to get into computer science. That's where all the money is at, that's where the jobs are at," Jonathan told BI. "It's a lot harder than they make it out to be." He's not alone. Recent computer science grads face a 6.1% unemployment rate in the US, higher than the national average. Wow. I never thought I'd see a stat like that. Jonathan now works in defense tech, not the video game industry he originally aspired to join. Like many of his peers, he's focused on gaining experience — any experience. It's looking like a tech career is evolving from a sure thing into something similar to every other type of job: You have to hustle and network to get your foot in the door, and then work like hell to stay employed and build steadily from there.
