Peddler's under-construction house razed in Kapurthala: Police
The district police, in coordination with the civil administration, razed an 'illegal' construction being carried out by a drug peddler on government land in Toti village in Sultanpur Lodhi sub-division of Kapurthala district on Wednesday, officials said.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Gaurav Toora said the drug trafficker, identified as Surjit Singh, had illegally acquired 10 marlas of panchayat land and constructed a house using the drug money.
He said the demolition was carried out on the orders of block development and panchayat officer (BDPO) Gurmeet Singh, with civil and police authorities using bulldozers to raze the illegal construction.
'Surjit Singh has faced seven cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act since 2013 across various police stations. His wife Kulwant Kaur is facing four and son Rahul seven NDPS cases. He is absconding. Surjit is in jail,' Toora said.
He added that the district administration has escalated its crackdown by seizing properties worth ₹3.5 crore linked to drug trafficking with an additional ₹1.5 crore in properties under process for seizure.
'The court proceedings are actively underway to auction these assets, ensuring stringent action against illicit gains from the drug trade,' he said.
BDPO Gurmeet Singh confirmed that Surjit Singh had encroached on panchayat land, and despite issuing notices for vacation, no valid response was received, leading to the demolition following due legal process.

‘Not fit for aircraft, go stitch slippers': IndiGo staffer alleges casteist abuse in office
Gurgaon: An FIR was registered against three officials of IndiGo Airlines after a colleague accused them of subjecting him to caste-based harassment and humiliation at the company's corporate office in the city. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The case — under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and BNS — was initially filed as a zero FIR in Bengaluru, but was transferred to DLF-1 police station in Gurgaon. IndiGo Airlines did not respond to requests for comment on the FIR. The complainant, a 35-year-old trainee pilot from Bengaluru, accused his seniors Tapas Dey, Manish Sahani, and Captain Rahul Patil of verbal abuse and discriminatory behaviour during a meeting on April 28 at Emaar Capital Tower 2 — where the airline is headquartered. The victim alleged that the harassment began immediately after he arrived in office when Dey demanded he leave his phone and bag outside in a "demeaning manner". "His instruction set the tone for the abuse that followed," he said in his complaint. The trainee pilot claimed that the three officials made casteist remarks during the 30-minute meeting from 3.30pm, which included statements like "you are not fit to fly an aircraft, go back and stitch slippers" and "you don't even have the worth to be a watchman here". He alleged that the harassment continued for days and was designed to pressure him into resigning. "The statements they made were not only humiliating but clearly aimed at degrading my identity and status as a Scheduled Caste person," the complaint read. The harassment allegedly extended beyond verbal abuse. It included "professional victimisation" through unjustified salary deductions, forced retraining sessions, revocation of travel privileges, and unwarranted warning letters. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Despite escalating the matter to higher officials and the company's ethics committee, the complainant claimed no action was taken, compelling him to approach the SC/ST cell for legal intervention. The FIR at DLF-1 police station was lodged under sections 3(1)(r) and 3(1)(s) of the SC/ST Act, which deal with intentional insults or intimidation meant to humiliate a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe member in public view. The case also included sections 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and 3(5) (common intention) of BNS. "We have begun collecting evidence and will soon record the statements of all parties involved," assistant sub-inspector Dalwinder Singh said.

Agent who sent Pb youth to US via ‘dunki route' denied bail
Chandigarh: The special court of additional district and sessions judge, Neetika Verma, in Mohali has rejected the regular bail application of a Delhi-based travel agent accused of sending a youth to the US via the illegal 'dunki route'. The case has put human trafficking networks operating under the guise of overseas job placements in the spotlight once again. The bail plea of Gagandeep Singh (36), a resident of Delhi's Tilak Nagar, was dismissed by the special court, with the NIA strongly opposing the bail on grounds of the severity and implications of the alleged crime. Gagandeep Singh is accused of illegally facilitating the travel of Gursewak Singh, a resident of Goindwal Sahib in Tarn Taran district, to the US through the perilous dunki route — via Spain, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico — after allegedly charging Rs 45 lakh under the pretext of providing a valid visa. According to the FIR registered on Feb 18, under Section 13 of the Punjab Travel Professionals (Regulation) Act, 2014, and Section 318 of the BNS, 2023, Gursewak was eventually captured by US border patrol authorities before he could cross into US territory and was detained for 19 days. He was deported and returned to India on Feb 15. In its order, the court observed: "The offence allegedly committed by the accused is grave in nature, where an unsuspecting aspirant was cheated, his life endangered, and his family coerced to pay a hefty sum for his safety. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The conduct of the accused points to a larger human trafficking racket." The court cited the possibility of the accused intimidating witnesses or absconding if granted bail and added that the chequered antecedents of the accused did not favour his release. The accused had moved a bail application under Section 483 of the BNSS, 2023, asserting his innocence and claiming that the matter had been "amicably settled" with the complainant. His counsel argued that a sum of Rs 19 lakh was agreed upon as compensation, with Rs 5 lakh already paid via a demand draft dated April 23, 2025, and the remaining to be paid by August 2025. However, the court refused to accept the settlement as a mitigating factor in light of the seriousness of the offence and its broader societal impact. Gagandeep Singh remains in judicial custody as investigations into the larger network of agents involved in the illegal immigration racket continue.
