Baby Boks coach Foote says his men learnt plenty from Rugby Championship ahead of World Cup

The Junior Springboks fell short in their bid to capture the Under-20 Rugby Championship but coach Kevin Foote said the players can take positives from their courageous effort against the young New Zealand on Saturday.
New Zealand held on to beat the Junior Springboks 48-45 in front of close to 15 000 spectators at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium to retain the title in dramatic fashion. South Africa had led 26-24 at the break.
Foote said his players should be proud of their effort after being outscored by eight tries to seven.
'There are a lot of positives to take from that performance; we are on a massive journey together and I only met Riley Norton and the guys in November. We are working hard on our game model and principles which everyone understands now,' said Foote.
'From a character and leadership perspective, we are in a good place. The lessons we learnt will be of huge benefit as we approach the World Under-20 Championship next month in Italy.'
The South Africans played their part in a breathtaking attacking game against the Kiwis, which delivered more than 90 points and went down to the wire, with New Zealand under huge pressure and playing with 13 men at the end.

'I think Melusi (Mthethwa, the team's backline coach) has done a great job in terms of our attack and I feel that the players have clarity on how we want to play,' said Foote.
'We played some exciting rugby during the tournament and just to hear the crowd get behind us when we started to light it up was exceptional.
'We know we are not the finished product, and we have a lot of work to do, but think our attack has come a long way and the guys are loving what they do with the ball.'
Foote said the Junior Bok coaching staff will send some players back to their provincial unions to play in the SA Rugby Under-21 Cup competition: 'We will take it case by case, but some must get game time.
'It's a strong competition and the players are well-coached. We are keen for them to keep going. There will be some whose load will be managed, we will do our medicals and take it case by case.'

SA Under-20 captain Riley Norton, who again had a solid game at lock, was also full of praise for the players' efforts, on and off the field.
'To have played these high-pressure games against quality opposition before the World Champs is going to be vital for us,' said Norton.
'The lessons we learnt, the connections and relationships we have built, not only on the field but off it, and the trust we have created, are extremely important.
Norton also praised the Eastern Cape crowd for their support during the thrilling encounter: 'It was a massive honour for us to play in front of such a passionate crowd.
"They came out in numbers on a Sunday afternoon, and we are privileged to represent them and play for the country. We want to say thank you to the people of Gqeberha for the support and hospitality throughout our three-week long stay here.'

Springboks to stick to their guns against unpredictable Barbarians
It might not be an official Test match, but the Springboks aren't planning on holding anything back when they meet the Barbarians in a historic match in Cape Town on Saturday, 28 June. The world champions will host the famous invitational side on South African soil for the first time on Saturday. Preparing to go up against a team like the Barbarians can be tricky given their unpredictable nature. But the Springboks are gearing up to stick to their own game. 'We see it as a Test match and we will play the game that way,' Bok assistant coach Tony Brown said during a press conference on Monday. 'The Barbarians are a famous side worldwide. Everyone knows how they play. Everyone knows what they try to do and the style they try to uphold as a Barbarians team. We're aware of what's coming – it is unpredictable rugby. 'You can't really prepare for it. But, if your awareness is high around what they're trying to do, then we can prepare as well as we can.' Brown has been instrumental in the Boks' continued growth since joining the back-to-back World Cup winners ahead of the 2024 season. With him on board, the South Africans' traditional set-piece strength and physicality have been perfectly complimented by their attacking evolution. During the 2024 season, the Springboks enjoyed increased numbers in various attacking categories, including tries and points scored, meters gained, and carries-and passes made. With this in mind, responding to Robbie Deans' Barbarians – and serving challenges of their own – shouldn't be too difficult for the Boks. 'It's definitely a different challenge to what we normally would have,' Brown added. 'They've always knocked over plenty of great sides over the years. 'The challenge is massive. That is exactly what we want for what we can call our first Test of the year.' History (slightly) favours BaaBaas The match will be the precursor to a packed international season for the Boks. It will be the ninth meeting between the sides. South Africa have faced the Barbarians on eight occasions, claiming three victories to the Barbarians' four. Their last meeting nine years ago ended in a draw. 'It won't be Barbarians versus Barbarians; it will be Springboks versus Barbarians,' Brown explained. 'Everything we do will be about how we play the game, how we play Test match rugby, and how we are going to win the game. 'The first thing is we see it as a Test match, and we're going to play the game that way. 'So, the guys who have been given the opportunity to play against the BaaBaas need to perform as best they can. 'We need to get our coaching right, we need to get our plans right. Will Springboks don unpopular Pick n Pay kit for 2025 test series?
The Springboks test series is just days away from kicking off. But will the thrice-winning World Champions be wearing new jerseys, courtesy of sponsors Pick n Pay? In recent weeks, the yellow and green training kits have been a hard pass for many rugby fans. Like the aqua-jade 'Checkers Sixty60' alternative kit, which was introduced during the 2023 World Cup, supporters have voiced their disapproval of the design. In March, the Blitzboks debuted their new look, which featured the retailer's large logo on the back. On social media, many South Africans, including rugby experts, have given the Springboks 'Pick n Pay kit' a thumbs down. The national rugby team were seen wearing the yellow and green jerseys as part of their training kits following two alignment camps in Cape Town this year. Speaking to The South African, SA Rugby's Commercial General Manager Andy Colquhoun confirmed that Springboks replica jerseys and training kits would go on sale this week, ahead of the test series season. The jerseys would not feature the Pick n Pay logo, as was anticipated, as the signing of the new sponsor was too late to incorporate into production. Images of new jerseys – different from last year's – would be released on Tuesday, 24 June, and would go on sale the next day. Replica jerseys featuring Pick n Pay's logo will be released to the public in 2026. Earlier this year, SA Rugby announced that Pick n Pay had signed a four-year contract as a Tier 1 sponsor. The sponsor's logo is featured on all Springboks match-day jerseys and on the front of all training apparel. The retailer replaces MTN, which previously sponsored the Boks from 2017 up until last year. The brand's name will feature on the back of the jersey in gold above the position number and player name. According to reports, the significant move will cost the supermarket group around R70 million per year. In March, the Blitzboks sported the new kit for their game against Uruguay. The Springboks will play a friendly against the Barbarians at Cape Town's DHL Stadium on Saturday, 28 June.
