Monahan to step down as PGA Tour commissioner
PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan will step down when his contract ends next year, the tour announced in a statement on Tuesday. Monahan, who replaced predecessor Tim Finchem in 2017, will gradually hand over his day-to-day responsibilities to newly appointed chief executive Brian Rolapp. Rolapp joins the tour after two decades with the National Football League, where he recently served as chief media and business officer. 'A year ago, I informed our boards that upon completing a decade as Commissioner, I would step down from my role at the end of 2026,' Monahan said. 'Since then, we've worked together to identify a leader who can build on our momentum and develop a process that ensures a smooth transition. 'We've found exactly the right leader in Brian Rolapp, and I'm excited to support him as he transitions from the NFL into his new role leading the PGA Tour.' Monahan will depart his role after a turbulent final few years of his tenure, which saw golf erupt into a virtual civil war with the rise of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit. A staunch critic of LIV, Monahan infuriated many players after it emerged the PGA Tour had secretly brokered an agreement with LIV to form a partnership with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), which bankrolls LIV. Negotiations aimed at a final agreement between the PGA Tour and LIV are ongoing. Speaking at a press conference ahead of this week's Travelers Championship, incoming chief executive Rolapp said he hoped to unify the sport. 'I think the fans have been pretty clear,' Rolapp said. 'They want to see the best golfers competing against each other. I agree with that. 'When it comes to the situation with LIV, I think that's a complex situation that's probably something I should learn more about before I speak. 'But I will say my focus is on growing the Tour, making it better, and really moving on from the position of strength that it has.'

Golf-Former NFL executive Rolapp appointed PGA Tour CEO

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo (Reuters) -The PGA Tour announced Brian Rolapp as its new CEO on Tuesday with the former NFL executive set to take on the role later this year as Commissioner Jay Monahan transitions his day-to-day responsibilities. A committee consisting of officials such as Monahan, as well as golfers Tiger Woods and Adam Scott, unanimously recommended Rolapp for the role. "A year ago, I informed our Boards that upon completing a decade as Commissioner, I would step down from my role at the end of 2026," Monahan said in a statement. "Since then, we've worked together to identify a leader who can build on our momentum and develop a process that ensures a smooth transition. We've found exactly the right leader in Brian Rolapp." He will serve as CEO of the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Enterprises, the golf circuit's for-profit entity. Rolapp, who joined the NFL in 2003, became the COO of NFL Media and then CEO of NFL Network. He was also the NFL's Chief Media and Business Officer, overseeing the league's commercial businesses, including broadcast and digital rights, and launched its digital platform NFL+. "I come from the National Football League, so I'll be the first to admit - I've got a lot to learn about golf. But I love the game, I play the game, and I am a PGA Tour fan myself," Rolapp said in an open letter. "To that end, I cannot wait to meet every one of our players, get in front of as many fans as possible, and better understand the needs of our partners." In February, the PGA Tour said it was closer to reaching a deal with the Saudi backers of LIV Golf, launched in 2022, which would help end the years-long divide in professional golf. Soccer-Pochettino glad to get a reaction after US end losing streak in style
FILE PHOTO: Jun 14, 2025; San Jose, California, USA; United States of America head coach Mauricio Pochettino (center) and midfielder Diego Luna answer questions from the media the date before their game against Trinidad and Tobago at PayPal Park. Mandatory Credit: D. Ross Cameron-Imagn Images/File Photo (Reuters) -United States manager Mauricio Pochettino said Sunday's 5-0 thrashing of Trinidad and Tobago in their Gold Cup opener would do his squad the world of good after they came in for some stinging criticism during a four-match losing run. The U.S., who will co-host next year's World Cup with Canada and Mexico, had come under pressure after a humiliating 4-0 defeat by Switzerland in a friendly last week but found form in California to go top of Group D. The U.S. were without some of their top players, including Christian Pulisic, Antonee Robinson, Weston McKennie and Yunus Musah, who have decided to skip the tournament, with the high-profile absences prompting criticism from former U.S. stalwarts Landon Donovan and Alexi Lalas. Pochettino said it was important to start the Gold Cup with a "good feeling". "Today's game was also a difficult one, especially because of the negative things that happened in recent weeks," he was quoted as saying by ESPN. "Some results that haven't gone well always generate a bit of noise. It's important for the players to have that confidence." With the World Cup on the horizon, former Tottenham Hotspur boss Pochettino said the Gold Cup would be a chance for players to stake their claim for a place in the squad next year. "We want to win, but at the same time it's to help the players to perform and to knock (on) the door and say, we can perform for the national team and we can be involved in the next World Cup," he added. "That is what I expect. Win, and the player really believes that they are having the opportunity...(to) fight for a place in the World Cup." The U.S. top Group D ahead of Saudi Arabia, Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago. They next face the Saudis, who beat Haiti 1-0 in their opener, in Texas on Thursday. The Gold Cup runs until July 6.
