Eastern Cape councillor arrested for role in businessman kidnapping
The councillor's accomplice, who allegedly carried out the kidnapping, remains in custody.
An East London councillor has on Friday been released on R2 000 bail after she was arrested in connection with the kidnapping of a businessman in Dimbiza, Eastern Cape.
The 27-year-old woman was arrested and charged for aiding the escape of a man who abducted the 42-year-old hardware store owner on 10 June.
Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation's (Hawks) regional spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Avele Fumba said the 34-year-old man allegedly forcefully shoved the business owner into a car belonging to the owner before speeding off.
Kidnapper intercepted
The East London-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation kidnapping task team was alerted of the incident and attended to the matter, which the Hawks say was a shameless kidnapping act.
'The kidnapping task team of the Hawks, in collaboration with the East London Flying Squad and the Dog Unit (K9), acted swiftly to vital information received from alert community members; the team then followed the vehicle of interest,' Fumba said.

'In a well-coordinated tactical action, the team intercepted the vehicle and arrested the male suspect on the spot,' he added.
Councillor linked to kidnapping
Fumba said further investigations pointed to the involvement of the local councillor, who allegedly tried to help the suspect.
'Both accused appeared before the Dimbaza Magistrate's Court on 12 June 2025.'
While the councillor was granted bail, the male suspect remains in custody and is expected to appear in court on 19 June for a formal bail application.
Officers commended
The provincial head of the Hawks, Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya, commended the collaborative effort and decisive action of the law enforcement officers.
'The arrest demonstrates the power of coordinated policing and critical role communities play in tackling serious crime,' Ngwenya said.

An off-duty security officer fatally shot a suspected robber who confronted him with a toy firearm in Ogunjini, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday, 20 June. Aserie Ndlovu murder case postponed as fifth suspect joins
The murder case was postponed after the newly-arrested fifth suspect opted to appoint a private lawyer. The case was postponed to allow the fifth suspect, Thabang Isaac Hlophe, to secure legal representation after joining the other four. Father Samuel Mogowe, Lucky Sikhosana, David Madisha, and Sello Skhalo Uoane previously abandoned their bail applications. Court appearance for formal joinder The five accused, who appeared in the KwaMhlanga Magistrate's Court in Mpumalanga on Friday, are facing two counts of kidnapping and murder each. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said Friday's court appearance was for the formal joinder of Hlophe to the matter and a possible bail application on his behalf. 'However, the application did not proceed as Hlophe opted to appoint a private attorney to represent him,' Nyuswa said. All suspects have been remanded in custody. 'The [NPA] condemns acts of violent crime and remains resolute in pursuing justice for victims,' Nyuswa said. How a man impersonated an eThekwini employee in a R78,000-a-day fuel theft scheme
A man impersonating an eThekwini Municipality employee was caught fraudulently filling diesel. Image: Supplied A man posing as an eThekwini Municipality employee has been arrested in connection with a large-scale diesel theft operation that is believed to have cost Durban hundreds of thousands of rands. The arrest followed a tip-off about suspicious fuel activity involving Municipal vehicles, which prompted an internal investigation. According to the eThekwini Municipality, forensic investigators from the City Integrity and Investigations Directorate uncovered the scam after receiving reports from the City Fleet Directorate about Municipal vehicles filling diesel more than 10 times a day at petrol stations used by the City's official fleet. The suspect was found using a fuel master card assigned to a Water and Sanitation vehicle that had long been out of service and marked for disposal. Investigators discovered that privately owned vehicles were fraudulently using the card to siphon diesel. In a bid to avoid detection, the suspect duplicated number plates and branded the doors of his vehicles to resemble authentic Municipal fleet cars. These vehicles were used to stockpile diesel, which was later resold. 'The culprit had four vehicles fitted with a 750-litre fuel tank at the base of each single cab van. The diesel was stored in these tanks and resold. Each vehicle generated about R78 000 a day,' said Jimmy Ngcobo, Director of the City Integrity and Investigations Directorate. He claimed to be employed by a private individual and received R2,000 per day for his role. His daily routine included visiting over 15 petrol stations across Durban to fill up the tanks. He was caught red-handed with assistance from Metro Police and Reaction Unit South Africa. The man has since appeared in court on charges of fraud and corruption.
