Two detained under Goondas Act for manufacturing spurious liquor
Two persons who were arrested by the Central Intelligence Unit (CIU) on charges of manufacturing spurious liquor were detained under the provisions of the Goondas Act.
The duo has been identified as K. Rajasekar, 45, of Marakkanam and S. Pandian, 46, of Ramapuram in Chennai.
The CIU police busted a fake liquor manufacturing unit at Poothurai near Puducherry on May 9 and arrested the duo. They ran a fake bottling unit on the premises and sold spurious liquor by affixing fake labels.
Acting on the recommendations of Villupuram Superintendent of Police P. Saravanan, Collector Shiek Abdul Rahman invoked the provisions of the Goondas Act against them. The orders were served on them in the Cuddalore Central Prison.

56 people detained under Goondas Act for PDS rice smuggling in Tamil Nadu, says IG
Inspector General of Police (IG) for Civil Supplies CID (CS-CID), Rubesh Kumar Meena, said that in the past five months, 56 people, who were arrested for Public Distribution System (PDS) rice smuggling, were detained under the provisions of the Goondas Act in the State. The IG inspected the CS-CID office at Keerambur in Namakkal district on Saturday. Later, Mr. Rubesh told reporters that to prevent crimes related to civil supplies, inspections were being carried out in four zones in the State. Already, inspections had been carried out in Tiruchi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, and Karur districts. In the past five months, 878 metric tonnes of PDS rice worth ₹1.06 crore were seized from smugglers. A total of 5,120 cases were registered and 4,608 people were arrested. From the offenders, 1,099 vehicles, including 434 four-wheelers, were seized. As PDS rice was smuggled across inter-State borders, monitoring increased in the border districts near Kerala and Karnataka. Stern action would be taken if PDS rice was used for feeding chickens in poultry farms, the IG warned.

Sacked BJP functionary detained under Goondas Act
The Avadi City Police have detained under Goondas Act a former BJP functionary and history sheeter for allegedly continuing to indulge in extortion and other criminal acts. Police said K.R. Venkatesan alias 'Milagaipodi' Venkatesan, 58, from Padiyanallur was a functionary of the BJP OBC Morcha and was removed from the party post. He was arrested in 2015 by the Andhra Pradesh police on charges of smuggling red sandalwood to foreign countries. Venkatesan has 49 criminal cases pending against him in Andhra Pradesh, and a history sheet on his name at the Avadi City Police Commissionerate as he was involved in at least five criminal cases in the police limits. The police said that recently, Deepan Chakravarthi, 41 of Kumadham Nagar, Mugalivakkam approached Venkatesan for help to get back ₹87 lakh from a consumer goods dealer, Ganapathillal, and received ₹1 lakh as advance. Subsequently, Venkatesan joined the opposite side and extorted ₹12 lakh. Deepan Chakravarthi lodged a complaint with the police, based on which Redhills Police arrested Venkatesan, Ganapathilal and Gokul Vasan on June 13. As Venkatesan faced criminal cases for offences such as extortion, Avadi City Police Commissioner K. Shankar issued orders for his detention under the Goondas Act.

Four accused in Sivagiri double murder case remanded to prison after six-day police custody
The six-day police custody of four accused in the brutal murder of an elderly couple in Sivagiri on April 28, 2025, ended on Thursday. Following this, they were produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody. The bodies of Ramasamy (72) and Bakkiyam (63), residents of Megaraiyan Thottam in Uchimedu near Sivagiri, were found in their home on May 1 — three days after the murder. Investigations revealed that the accused — Aachiappan, Madeswaran, and Ramesh — had stolen 10.75 sovereigns of gold jewellery from the couple, handed it over to a goldsmith, Gyanasekaran, to be melted, and later retrieved it in a different form. All four were arrested on May 19. The police obtained custody of the accused on June 13 for interrogation. After the six-day period concluded, they were presented before the court on Thursday evening. District Munsif-cum-Judicial Magistrate G. Pandiarajan scheduled the next hearing for June 27 and ordered that the accused be remanded to prison. Of the four, Aachiappan, Madeswaran, and Ramesh — who were detained under the Goondas Act on June 18 — were sent to Coimbatore Central Prison, while Gyanasekaran was lodged in the district prison at Gobichettipalayam. Details of the interrogation and their alleged involvement in other murder cases are yet to be revealed.
