Hong Kong needs more annual events: lawmaker
Lawmaker Dominic Lee said the government should assist organisers in bringing annual events to Hong Kong. Photo courtesy of Dominic Lee's Facebook.
In order to build a bigger economic driver and make better use of Kai Tak Stadium, Hong Kong should aim to have more annual events, according to New People's Party lawmaker Dominic Lee.
Lee, who sits on a government tourism committee, told RTHK's Backchat programme that concerts from groups like K-pop sensation Blackpink next year are great, but annual events like the Rugby Sevens have more of an economic impact.
"One of the suggestions I recommended to the government is that we've got to have annual events...it's good because people [then] have expectations, they will actually set aside their schedule to come to Hong Kong," Lee said.
Lee said the government needs to be more proactive in organising events, rather than leaving it up to the market.
"The government has to be a little more supportive and actually assist organisers to actually secure these annual events to be held in Hong Kong because it's good for Hong Kong's economy."
Lee's remarks follow a football match at Kai Tak Stadium on Tuesday, which saw Hong Kong, China clinch a 1-0 victory over India in front of a sold out crowd, in their first home game at the new venue.
Affordable tickets for the match played a big part in its success, according to Lee.
"Kai Tak Stadium is not a stadium for only the wealthy people, it's a stadium for the Hong Kong people, irrespective of demographic, age or walk of life," he said.
Lee also said the new stadium, with its large capacity, frees up other venues for lesser known artists.
"In the past, really popular singers will do their concerts at Hong Kong Stadium and they'll take up like 20 days, because they can sell out 20 days. So now they're moving to a bigger stadium and it really frees up a lot of other venues as well."

CS says US trying to destroy peace and order in HK

CS says US trying to destroy peace and order in HK Chief Secretary Eric Chan says the city's national security laws help prevent foreign politicians from stirring up trouble. Photo: RTHK Chief Secretary Eric Chan has warned against western efforts to damage peace and order in Hong Kong in the hope of undermining China's development. Speaking on RTHK's NSL Chronicles III programme, Chan said the SAR's two pieces of security legislation had prevented foreign politicians from stirring up trouble here. "There are still countries in the West, especially the United States, that are watching Hong Kong with a covetous eye. They hope to use different ways to destroy Hong Kong's peace and order, to ultimately undermine the nation's development," Chan said. He described the Hong Kong National Security Law and the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance as "medicine" to treat "illnesses", while underscoring the importance of "boosting Hong Kong's immunity" through patriotic education when it comes to national security.

Fluminense knock Ulsan HD out of Club World Cup

Fluminense knock Ulsan HD out of Club World Cup Fluminense's Brazilian midfielder Nonato celebrates after scoring the equalising goal. Photo: AFP Juan Freytes put Fluminense in front in the 83rd minute and Keno's second-half stoppage time header sealed a 4-2 victory over UIsan HD in an engrossing Group F contest in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Saturday (June 21) evening. Freytes' winner, his first goal for the Brazilian club, came 17 minutes after teammate Nonato leveled during a contest where the lead twice changed hands. John Arias also scored from an early free kick as Fluminense moved even on points and goal difference with Dortmund at the Fifa Club World Cup, ahead of their group finale against Malmelodi Sundowns on Wednesday. Jinhyun Lee and Um Won-Sang scored for Ulsan, which was eliminated with the result. Freytes put Fluminense in front for good after the South Koreans failed to clear a corner, dispatching a composed finish inside the right post after receiving German Cano's tidy pass. Nine minutes later, Keno's header of Arias' cross against a clearly fatigued Ulsan defence sealed the victory. Ulsan struck twice inside the final 10 minutes of the first half to turn an early deficit into a halftime lead before Fluminense levelled at 2-all through Nonato in the 66th minute. After a flowing move from the Brazilians, Keno's cross from the left was only partially cleared, and Nonato delivered a composed finish inside the right post from about 15 yards out. Late in the first half, Lee leveled for Ulsan in the 37th minute on an exceptional counter attack. Darijan Bojanic's initial pass from just beyond his own box sprung Won-Sang down the right. Won Sang's low cross rolled all the way across the box and beyond goalkeeper Fabio's dive before Lee met it on the opposite flank. From a tight angle, Lee delivered an excellent first-touch finish into an open goal. It was the same duo connecting in reverse in first-half stoppage time, when after a poor Fluminense partial clearance, Won Sang met Lee's cross with a powerful diving header beyond Fabio's dive into the bottom left corner. For the opening half-hour it was Fluminense who looked far more likely to score. The lead eventually came through Arias in the 27th minute on his ferociously struck right-footed free kick from 25 yards that beat goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-Woo to the top right corner. (Reuters)

National Security law brought HK into new era: Zhou Ji

National Security law brought HK into new era: Zhou Ji Zhou Ji says national security underpins Hong Kong's ability to pursue high-quality development and secure stability and prosperity for the territory. Photo: RTHK The new head of Beijing's liaison office in Hong Kong on Saturday said the SAR has entered a "new era" following the enactment of the national security law, as he told the city to foster long-term stability through high-quality development. In his first major public speech since being taking up his new position last month, liaison office director Zhou Ji underscored the need to defend the foundation of the rule of law by fully implementing national security legislation in the city. "We must make sure there's a high-level of security to safeguard high-quality development," Zhou said. "Without a high level of political, economic and social security, there's no way we can take forward high-quality development," he stressed. The official said Hong Kong's future will depend on its ability to move with the times to bring about high-quality development. "Following the in-depth implementation of the national security law, Hong Kong has entered a new stage of development. It is currently striving to seek economic growth, pursue development, undergo reforms, advance infrastructure and improve people's livelihoods," Zhou said. "In the new stage of One Country, Two Systems, we must take the initiative to assess, adapt and seek change, and promote Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability through high-quality development."
