At a festival, are you Elinor or Marianne?
Your articles presented two entertaining but very different approaches to kitting yourself out for a music festival ('A godsend at 5am', 12 June; Field the love, 13 June). One was all boots and head torches, the other pretty dresses and earrings. How appropriate, in this Jane Austen anniversary year, to see the contrasting demands of Sense and Sensibility so clearly set out.Mary RooksLeicester
Adrian Chiles' piece (Who could deny a hot, tired delivery driver the fruit from their cherry tree?, 12 June) reminded me of a tree we had at the front edge of our garden by the pavement. When its luscious red fruits were ripe, we'd often see someone pluck a handful, only to spit them out a moment later. They were crab apples.Gillian MacintoshBurley-in-Wharfedale
I'm still trying to get my head round 'a nuclear-capable canon' (Trump's military parade taps an ancient tradition of power: from Mesopotamia to Maga, 14 June). Presumably, such a cleric would, in addition to administering cathedral affairs, be able to bring forward the date of Armageddon.Les HearnLondon
'If finding 18 words in Word Wheel … is 'genius' level, what does the 46 words I found make me?' (Letters, 13 June). A big showoff!Margaret CoupeLongnor
When did we start having to listen up as opposed to listen (Letters, 13 June)? And don't get me started on skyrocketing! Surely rocketing would suffice?!Sue BeaumontBedford

Sam Smith puts on a quirky display in purple shorts and loafers as they enjoy a solo summer stroll through the streets of New York
Sam Smith put on a quirky display in purple shorts and loafers as they enjoyed a solo summer stroll through the streets of New York on Friday. The singer, 32, showcased their unique sense of style as they stepped out in sport shorts and a black vest top. They paired their relaxed look with black leather slip on flats and black socks as they seemed to enjoy some music during their walk. To accessorise the performer kept a low profile in a pair of black tinted sunglasses which they paired with a cap worn backwards and their expertly groomed moustache. Earlier this year Sam and singer Kesha supported their fashion designer boyfriend, Christian Cowan as he debuted his fall/winter 2025 collection at NYFW. They have been dating since 2022 after meeting when Christian collaborated with Sam on the costumes for their music video, I'm Not Here to Make Friends. Christian, whose clientele includes A-list stars Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B and Heidi Klum, confirmed his romance with Sam with a kiss in January 2023 as the two walked together arm-in-arm in New York. It marks Sam's first public relationship since their split from 13 Reasons Why actor Brandon Flynn, 30, and after they came out as non-binary in 2019. In 2019, Sam revealed that they identify as non-binary and asked to be addressed by the pronouns they/them instead of he/him. Sam wrote on Instagram at the time: 'After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I've decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.' Speaking about their gender, Sam added: 'I'm not male or female, I think I flow somewhere in between. It's all on the spectrum.' The singer, known for hits Dancing With a Stranger, Too Good At Goodbyes and 2015 Bond track Writing's on the Wall, also said they are open to dating whomever they fall in love with. 'I generally have never really thought about people, any human beings, in rigid terms,' they shared. 'I've grown up in a family where the gender power balance and all these things were completely shifted. 'My mum worked, my dad was a househusband. 'My sisters are incredibly strong women.' As well as their romance with Brandon Flynn, Sam also dated Jonathan Zeizel and thanked the model for 'breaking their heart' because it led to four Grammy wins. Sam penned the track Stay With Me following their split and later vowed never to 'fall in love again with someone who doesn't love me back'.

Will Smith gives bizarre take on how that Chris Rock Oscars slap impacted his career as he reflects on authenticity and imperfection
Will Smith has opened up about the infamous moment he slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars, offering a surprising take on how it impacted his life and career. The actor, 56, reflected on the incident - where he struck Chris, 60, on stage over a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith 's shaved head, which was due to her alopecia diagnosis. The shocking moment led to a 10-year ban from the Oscars and sparked global backlash. Now, nearly three years later, Will has described the incident as 'bruitiful' – a blend of brutal and beautiful – as he spoke about authenticity, personal growth, and how the fallout reshaped his perspective. Appearing on Radio 1Xtra with host Remi Burgz on Tuesday, he said: 'Finding that way to be with my own humanity - be able to not be perfect but be human and find a higher power in my humanity that I found in my constellation of ideas of perfection that we called Will Smith. 'The fullness of who I am to allow that to be better than Will Smith. 'The honestly and authenticity and the broader spectrum of the possibilities of who I am is better than Will Smith. 'Working in that space of authenticity and honesty and perfection. 'Allowing that to grow into a higher perfection than the imagery of Will Smith is where I am as an artist and human right now.' The slap remains one of the most shocking and talked-about moments in Oscars history. It unfolded during the 94th Academy Awards at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre, as Chris was presenting the award for Best Documentary. While on stage, he made a joke about Jada's shaved head, comparing her to Demi Moore's look in the 1997 film G.I. Jane. Jada, who has alopecia, didn't find the comment amusing - and moments later, Will stormed the stage and struck Chris across the face with an open-handed slap. 'Will Smith just smacked the s*** out of me,' Chris said from the stage after being hit. The actor then returned to his seat beside Jada and, still visibly furious, shouted at Chris to 'keep my wife's name out your f***ing mouth' - twice - leaving the audience stunned. He later won the Oscar for Best Actor for his work in King Richard after the incident. 'I want to apologize to the Academy. I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I'm not crying for winning an award. It's not about winning an award for me. It's about being able to shine a light on all of the people,' Will said during his acceptance speech. It took four months for the actor to issue an apology to Chris, which came in the form of an emotional YouTube video. 'Chris, I apologise to you. My behaviour was unacceptable and I'm here whenever you're ready to talk,' he said directly into the camera. Smith noted that he has since reached out to Rock but the comedian was not ready. Will has been working hard to rehabilitate his once squeaky clean image by speaking openly about that 'horrific night' and admitting his wrongdoings.
