Gerik bus crash: Coach was rented by students, not UPSI, says vice-chancellor
IPOH: Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) vice-chancellor, Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff ( pic ), clarified that the bus involved in the road accident on the East-West Highway (Jalan Raya Timur-Barat, JRTB) was not operated by the university.
"The students had privately rented the vehicle to return to campus after the Hari Raya Haji break. It was an initiative made by the students themselves," he said in a press conference at the Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun here.

Students travelled from Jerteh, Terengganu to the university's main campus.
He added that accommodation and monetary aid will be provided to the victims' families.
"We have informed the families of the victims and will provide aid to them. There will be one UPSI personnel assisting the deceased families.

"Based on the list, 44 students were supposed to board the bus. We are still identifying the time the victims left from Terengganu. We expect the post-mortem to conclude by this afternoon," he added.
Earlier, it was reported that a total of 42 students, a bus driver, an attendant, and four occupants from the other vehicle were involved in the crash.
The accident occurred when the bus overturned and the car veered into a ditch, with both vehicles heading from Jeli towards Gerik.

BUTTERWORTH: The Road Transport Department (RTD) is in the final stages of completing investigation papers to prosecute the operator of the bus company involved in the accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in Gerik on June 9. Its director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said it was preparing two investigation papers, one involving the bus operating company and the other involving the company that leased the bus. He was responding to a question on whether the RTD would prosecute the owner of the bus company involved in the accident. When asked whether the investigation was affected by allegations that the operator had suffered a heart attack, Aedy Fadly denied the matter. He said action against the operator was being taken in accordance with existing regulations, and there was no issue related to health conditions. "However, if he (the owner) is hospitalised or otherwise indisposed, we will wait before taking further action. "But for now, we are proceeding with the investigation papers," he added. Transport Minister Anthony Loke was reported as saying that the RTD would take legal action against the bus company if it was found to have violated regulations or failed to ensure operational safety. Fifteen UPSI students were killed when the bus they were in collided with a multi-purpose vehicle along Jalan Jeli-Gerik near Tasik Banding, Perak.

Regarding the allegation that the JPJ could not record the bus company's operator's statement because he suffered a heart attack, Aedy Fadly said his side was not informed about the matter. 'He (the bus operator) had a heart attack, it has nothing to do with the JPJ and I have not received any reports saying otherwise. We will still take action; if he goes to the hospital we will wait,' he added.
