August elections to end MTUC's 3-year leadership tussle

The Malaysian Trades Union Congress had been embroiled in a leadership dispute since a High Court ruling in 2023 declared the triennial elections held in 2022 null and void.
PETALING JAYA : After a three-year leadership tussle, the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) will hold its triennial elections at a special delegates conference in early August to resolve the impasse.
The nation's largest labour centre had effectively been without a working committee after a High Court ruling in 2023 declared the triennial elections held a year earlier as null and void.
Since then, it had been embroiled in a leadership dispute.
In February, the Court of Appeal heard a challenge by MTUC president Effendi Abdul Ghani against his secretary-general, Kamarul Baharin Mansor, both of whose elections were declared null and void in 2023.
It consented to a mutual agreement to set up a joint special committee to run MTUC and hold fresh elections within 90 days.
According to a notice from committee head J Solomon, a former MTUC secretary-general, elections will be held during the two-day conference beginning on Aug 2 to select 19 office bearers for the 2025–2027 term.
The positions include president and deputy president, 13 vice-presidents, the secretary-general and deputy secretary-general, and the finance secretary and deputy finance secretary.
The vice-presidents will comprise seven from the private sector and three each from the public sector, local authorities and statutory bodies.
About 500 delegates from private and government sector unions are expected to vote in the August elections.
The court had given the committee 90 days to conduct the elections as per MTUC's constitution with a budget of RM300,000.
The committee must also submit a report and financial accounts to the incoming office bearers 14 days after the elections.
In 2023, the Shah Alam High Court had declared the elections held a year earlier as null and void following an application by a former MTUC president, Halim Mansor, citing actions that were ultra vires the congress's constitution.
Subsequently, the court allowed a conditional stay of execution, which made it clear that MTUC officials should only handle its daily operational matters and refrain from making policy decisions and statements or attend meetings in any of their capacities.
Effendi and Kamarul were later embroiled in another legal matter on who was the rightful president of MTUC. This led to the Court of Appeal ordering the setting up of the joint special committee.

Anwar: Malaysia has right to speak up, calls for end to hostilities in the Middle East

KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said that Malaysia as a sovereign country should be able to speak up and take a stand over US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran. Anwar defended Iran's retaliation against Israel's attacks, but at the same time called for justice, peace and an end to violence. As an 'independent and sovereign country,' Anwar said, "Malaysia has to speak our stance.' The prime minister's remarks were from an audio recording made today in Kuching, Sarawak. Earlier, Anwar said Israel should not act provocatively and violently towards other countries, and said it was quite fair that Iran chose to fight and respond to Israel's attacks. The situation has now become murkier due to interference from external countries including the US, he said. Anwar also stressed the importance of human lives and justice, as well as the impact of the war globally. 'If the Strait of Hormuz is closed, that will be a big problem to the global economy," he said. Previously, Anwar had also said Malaysia as a sovereign nation must stand up for Iran's right to retaliate to uphold its dignity. On June 13, Israel launched airstrikes on Iran's nuclear and missile facilities, while Iran retaliated with missiles. The two countries have been engaged in combat for more than a week now. Newswire Reuters today reported that the ongoing conflict has resulted in Iran recording at least 430 deaths and 3,500 injured persons, while Israel has recorded 24 civilian deaths and 1,272 injured. Today, the US carried out airstrikes on nuclear facilities in Iran, with US president Donald Trump saying that the strikes had taken out three main nuclear sites there. Israel was previously reported saying that its strikes have delayed Iran's potential to develop a nuclear weapon by at least two or three years, while Iran has said its nuclear programme has peaceful aims.

‘Leadership isn't about physical strength': PAS backs Hadi to stay as president despite heart surgery, with Tuan Ibrahim dismissing renewal concerns

PARIT, June 22 — PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has today affirmed the party's continued support for Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang to remain as president, amid calls for a leadership change due to health concerns and party rejuvenation. New Straits Times reported Tuan Ibrahim saying Abdul Hadi's leadership and vision remain vital for PAS, especially following the Islamist party's recent electoral gains and strong performance. 'There are no major health issues. Tuan Guru recently received treatment at the National Heart Institute, and he is in good health. We expect him to be discharged within a day or two,' he said, referring to Abdul Hadi. 'Our best achievements were under Tok Guru's leadership including 34 parliamentary seats and victories in numerous state seats. So why stop when we are succeeding? 'Leadership is not about physical strength, but about ideas, vision, and management. That is what truly matters, and we believe Tok Guru is still capable,' he added while officianting the PAS Parit division annual general meeting. His comments come amid speculation of a potential leadership reshuffle ahead of the party's 71st Muktamar — or annual congress — in September, part of wider discussions on internal renewal. In February, it was reported that Tuan Ibrahim had not confirmed whether he would defend his deputy president post, stating that it was up to PAS delegates to nominate him if they wished. Tuan Ibrahim also highlighted Abdul Hadi's influence in global Islamic circles, saying he is regularly consulted on international issues, including the Sunni-Shiah divide and the Israel conflict. Abdul Hadi, who is also Marang MP, had earlier this week undergone heart surgery. Supporters and critics have predicted that Abdul Hadi may take the less strenuous post of spiritual adviser rather than president, with Datuk Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar widely seen as a possible successor.

Police slam ‘irresponsible, damaging' report linking new IGP Mohd Khalid to PKR, say won't tolerate attempt to undermine force

KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 – The police have today refuted a report by Malay daily Sinar Harian linking newly appointed Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Mohd Ismail to a political party. In a statement, the police criticised the media outlet for failing to verify the information before publication, calling the report irresponsible and damaging to the reputation of both the police force and the individual concerned. 'Journalistic ethics demand that all published reports undergo fact-checking, cross-verification, and uphold integrity in reporting,' the police force's secretary Datuk Kamaruzaman Abdullah said. The statement emphasised that the police force operates on the principles of neutrality, integrity, and professionalism. They reiterated that Mohd Khalid has never been a member of, or held any position in, any political party as alleged in the article. 'The statement is false, misleading, and creates a negative perception that casts doubt on the credibility of the national security force,' they said. Kamaruzaman added that the police would not tolerate any attempts to undermine public trust in its officers or operations. Yesterday, PKR has clarified that Mohd Khalid has never been a member of PKR, let alone held any position within the party. PKR secretary-general Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said that the circulation of an inaccurate profile linking the IGP to a political party could undermine his image and credibility. She added that it could also fuel negative perceptions of PKR as the ruling party if members of the public believe that Mohd Khalid's appointment was politically motivated. Mohd Khalid — who succeeded Tan Sri Razarudin Husein — began his policing career in 1987 and has served in various key roles including deputy director of Special Branch, the police intelligence division, and as security liaison officer in London. Prior to his new appointment, the 60-year-old served as director of the Special Branch and retired on April 8 but was reappointed on a contract basis from that date until now.
