Abang Johari: Three strategic priorities identified for post-completion phase of Baleh Dam

BALEH (June 16): The Sarawak government has identified three key strategic priorities for the post-completion phase of the Baleh Hydroelectric Dam, positioning the state as a regional leader in green energy development.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that these priorities are biodiversity conservation, agricultural development, and the protection of wildlife habitats.
The Premier stressed that post-project planning is crucial to ensure that the benefits of power generation are achieved without compromising environmental sustainability and the well-being of local communities.
'This approach is vital to ensure that our energy development does not come at the expense of the environment or local livelihoods,' he said in a Sarawak Public Communications Unit news report during his working visit to the Baleh Hydroelectric Dam site today.
He stressed that once the dam is completed by 2027, Sarawak Energy must roll out a comprehensive biodiversity agenda aligned with green economy principles.
Among the major initiatives proposed is a large-scale reforestation programme to restore forest biodiversity impacted by the dam's development.
Agricultural activities will also be introduced in surrounding areas to create new economic opportunities for local communities.
Abang Johari further highlighted the importance of preserving and rehabilitating wildlife habitats in the region.
He directed Sarawak Energy to work closely with the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), Sarawak Forest Department, and Sarawak Agriculture Department to carry out this green agenda.
'These efforts must be aligned with the involvement of local communities and businesses,' he said.
This approach, he added, is in line with the state government's long-term goal to ensure that energy development moves hand in hand with environmental conservation, particularly in the face of global climate change.
'We have learned from the development experiences in Batang Ai and Bakun. Now, we are adapting our strategies to meet global climate demands,' he noted.
The Baleh Hydroelectric Project, currently in its second phase of construction, is expected to be completed by the end of 2029, with a generation capacity of 1.2 gigawatts.

Fatimah, who is also Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, said the grant reflects the state government's commitment to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Melanau community. 'The Melanau Heritage Gallery is a Projek Rakyat that has been completed through grants from the Sarawak Premier and is now open to the public,' she said in a statement issued through the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas). Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg presented the cheque to the board's chair, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, during a ceremony at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here yesterday. The presentation was witnessed by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. She added that the gallery serves as a cultural exhibition space and a platform for education and tourism, benefiting both local communities and visitors. According to the Dalat assemblywoman, two phases of the gallery have been completed, while the third phase is in the planning stage. 'The next phase will feature 10 key components highlighting Melanau customs, traditions and notable local figures. We also plan to introduce interactive elements such as traditional dance, food and medicinal workshops to offer visitors a more immersive experience,' she said. The ceremony also saw several other organisations receiving grants from Abang Johari. These included the Association of the Boards of Management of Aided Chinese Primary Schools in Kuching, Samarahan and Serian, represented by chairman Dato Jonathan Chai; the Sarawak United Association of Private Chinese Secondary School Management Board, represented by Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau; and Tabung Jasamu Kebajikan Veteran Tentera Anak Sarawak, represented by Lt-Gen (R) Datuk Stephen Mundaw, advisor to the Sarawak Veterans Association.

Chinese medium secondary schools receive RM10 mln annual grant from Sarawak government

KUCHING (June 20): The Sarawak United Association of Private Chinese Secondary School Management Board (Sha Dong Zong) received an RM10 million grant from the Sarawak government today. The annual funding is for the 14 Chinese independent secondary schools in the state. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg presented the cheque to association board members here today. Association chairman Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming pointed out Chinese independent secondary schools have received such grants annually since 2014, when the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem was chief minister. The initial RM3 million grant increased yearly until five years ago when the association started to receive RM10 million each year. 'Over the past decade, the total cumulative funding has reached RM92 million. This long-term commitment has significantly alleviated the financial burden on school boards and provided a stable foundation for the sustainable development of all 14 Chinese independent secondary schools across Sarawak,' he said. Lau pointed out that the schools depended very much on public donations as they do not come under the Education Ministry. He thanked Abang Johari and the Sarawak government for their steadfast support. 'The continued allocation reflects the government's strong recognition of and commitment to the multi-stream education system in Sarawak, and serves as a testament to the enduring contributions and academic achievements of the Chinese independent school sector,' he stressed. 'In Chinese tradition, it is often said: 'To govern the nation well, one must first cultivate talent; and to cultivate talent, education must come first.' The Premier reaffirmed that enhancing the quality of local education remains a central pillar in Sarawak's strategic vision to become a high-income region by 2030.' Lau noted that the recently announced '2026 Free Higher Education Scheme for Outstanding Students' will also cover Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) candidates, reinforcing the Sarawak government's policy direction of nurturing home-grown talent. In alignment with the Premier's 'Third Language Policy', he said Chinese independent schools will continue to enhance their trilingual education model of Mandarin, Malay, and English, while actively advancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. Among those present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian and Sha Dong Zong deputy chairman Datuk Richard Wee.

Sabah-Sarawak power grid link to be completed by year-end

Energy Commission of Sabah (Ecos) Chief Executive Officer Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid described the development as 'the beginning part, the starting point' of the total Borneo Grid. Advertisement Speaking at the Energy Asia 2025 parallel session titled 'Energising Malaysia's Growth' held in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, Nasser said the grid linkage between the two Borneo states holds strategic value not only for Sabah and Sarawak but also for the region's future power integration. 'The Borneo future will be the Asean Power Grid connecting to other surrounding regions. The advantage, especially for Sabah, is our geographical position. We aim to capitalise on that to play a key role in the regional energy ecosystem - within and beyond Asean,' he said. Also speaking during the same session was Sarawak Energy Group Chief Operating Officer James Ung Sing Kwong, who confirmed the planned interconnection between Sabah and Sarawak. 'As Datuk Nasser mentioned, we are targeting to connect with Sabah by the end of this year, enabling both states to share energy resources across Borneo,' said James. He added that Sarawak Energy is also looking to build upon this connection by forging stronger energy ties with neighbouring Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia's Kalimantan region - moves that would help lay the foundation for a seamless Borneo Grid. 'This Borneo Grid will then form part of the Asean Power Grid through further interconnections from Sarawak to the peninsula and Singapore,' he explained. According to James, the broader vision is to build an integrated, cross-border energy network that facilitates the exchange of renewable energy and enhances grid stability across Southeast Asia. 'This is perhaps the bigger picture of what Sarawak Energy is aspiring to in the next 10 years - a truly interconnected Asean energy future,' he said. James also recalled Sarawak's earlier success in regional interconnectivity. 'In 2016, Sarawak Energy began interconnecting our systems with Western Kalimantan. Since then, we have been sharing approximately 100 to 150 megawatts of electricity regularly.' The Sarawak–Western Kalimantan grid link marked a milestone in regional cooperation, enabling cross-border electricity trading and setting a precedent for the future Borneo and Asean power networks. The Energy Asia conference, hosted by Petronas, has brought together top leaders, policymakers, and innovators to chart pathways for sustainable growth, decarbonisation, and energy security in Asia. The Sabah–Sarawak grid link is seen as one of the tangible progress points emerging from regional collaboration.
