UN Unveils New Plans to Support Refugees in Sudan

Describing the Sudanese crisis as "immense and brutal," Guterres warned that the conflict is spreading across the region, necessitating urgent intervention from the African Union and the international community. He emphasized the importance of:

Halting external military support and arms flows
Push for Ceasefire and Peace Initiatives
The Secretary-General reiterated that Sudanese citizens demand an immediate ceasefire and civilian protection. He confirmed that his personal envoy, Ramtane Lamamra, is actively engaging with warring parties to explore concrete steps for peace, including the full implementation of the Jeddah Declaration.
As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, Guterres made a global appeal:
"Ramadan is a time for peace, mercy, and giving. I urge you all to use your influence for good—support humanitarian aid, uphold international law, stop hostilities, and work towards the lasting peace that the Sudanese people desperately need."

Egypt condemns Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities: FM Abdelatty at OIC meeting - Foreign Affairs

Egypt's Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, has condemned Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, warning that they violate international humanitarian law and relevant United Nations (UN) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) resolutions. 'Egypt strongly condemns this escalation, as it poses a direct threat to regional and international security and stability,' Abdelatty said during the 51st session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers in Istanbul. He said the Israeli aggression on Iran - a direct violation of international law and the UN Charter - had preempted Washington-Tehran talks brokered by Oman, aimed at reviving diplomacy over Iran's nuclear programme. 'These negotiations aimed to prevent the region from descending into a new wave of escalation and conflict, which would negatively impact all countries in the region.' Abdelatty reiterated that 'there are no military solutions to this crisis,' urging a ceasefire, return to negotiations, and 'halt [to] the current military escalation.' He also called for a comprehensive approach to Iran's nuclear file. He renewed Egypt's call for a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction, criticizing Israel's refusal to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) or to place its nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards. Cairo has been working alongside Doha to push for a ceasefire and deliver humanitarian aid. 'Since the beginning of the brutal Israeli aggression on Gaza, Egypt has worked to reach a sustainable ceasefire, in cooperation with Qatar, and to deliver humanitarian aid to the Strip,' he said, citing the worsening humanitarian crisis for more than two million Palestinians. He praised regional and international support for Palestinian rights. He welcomed OIC support for Egypt's Arab-Islamic plan for Gaza's recovery, which he said should begin 'as soon as a ceasefire is reached. " He also welcomed convening a high-level international conference in Cairo to support the plan. Regional instability FM Abdelatty also addressed other Middle East crises. 'Egypt condemns the repeated Israeli violations of Syrian and Lebanese sovereignty,' he said, calling for the immediate withdrawal from the Golan Heights and other Syrian territories, as well as from southern Lebanon, and the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. He also stressed the need for a political settlement in Yemen to end the humanitarian crisis and preserve the country's unity. On the summit's sidelines, Abdelatty participated in an Arab League coordination meeting and held talks with counterparts from Tunisia, Somalia, Chad, Gambia, Gabon, and Djibouti. UN hails Egypt's refugee hosting experience as example to follow

Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to Egypt and the Arab League Hanan Hamdan stressed the importance of increasing international support, not only for refugees, but also for host communities that are facing growing pressures. During a meeting with the Cabinet's Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) on Friday 20/6/2025, Hamdan hailed Egypt's efforts at the institutional and grassroots levels, in support of refugees, describing Egypt's experience in this regard as an example to follow. 'There are no official camps for refugees, who are integrated into the Egyptian society, which continues to welcome them with open arms,' Hamdan pointed out. She noted that the UNHCR is working closely with various ministries, as well as educational and health institutions in Egypt, to provide joint support, which reflects positively on both refugees and the host community. Hamdan said that the UNHCR's visit to Egypt, set for June 24, comes at a crucial time to launch a response plan that deals with the fallout from the Sudanese and Syrian crises while meeting the needs of other refugees in Egypt and supporting host communities in Egypt. She highlighted the burdens Egypt bears to provide decent humanitarian support to these refugees. Asserting the UNHCR's keenness to highlight the suffering of refugees and asylum seekers around the world on World Refugee Day, observed on June 20, Hamdan said that global funding is still not enough to provide for refugees' needs, given the mounting humanitarian crises and their complexity.
