Students told to develop a positive mindset to face challenges
The Hindu EducationPlus Career Counselling 2025 was successfully organised in Bidar on Saturday.
Resource persons from diverse fields addressed students and answered their questions in the event held at the Poojya Channabasava Pattaddevaru Rang Mandir. Resource persons from the Karnataka Examinations Authority CET cell and the VTU regional centre in Kalaburagi also addressed students.
Sunil Panwar, chief conservator of forests and member-secretary of Zoo Authority of Karnataka, Mysuru, inaugurated the event. His talk focussed on personality development of youth and developing a positive mindset to face challenges in life.
'One is forced to face rejections and disappointments. But they should not lead us to dejection, anxiety or stress. Each defeat or loss should serve as a stepping stone to success and help us prepare better for the challenges to come. Only those who learn from their mistakes and failures, succeed. Their quality of life is also markedly better than those who are easily upset and lose heart,' he said.
He asked students to harness the power of positive thinking and learn to live a balanced, stress-free life.
Dr. Panwar also spoke of the urgent need for graduates of various disciplines to develop specific set of skills. 'There are studies that show that over 80% of the graduates are not employable as they do not have the skills required by the industry. Youth should resolve to acquire these skills. They should take it upon themselves to learn them and practise them, based on industrial trends,' he said.
Deputy Commissioner Shilpa Sharma held an engaging session with the students, asking them questions about their career choices and family background. She gave them real life situations that are faced by young officer in their line of duty and asked them how they would react to them.
'Don't do anything because anyone tells you. Do it only if you are convinced,' she said.
She told the students to learn as many languages as possible as it would open doors to multiple cultures and civilisations. She also asked them to pick up a hobby and art form.
When a student asked her why she chose the civil services, she said she was looking for a bigger canvas to fill. She related her UPSC journey and how she prepared for the examination. She said that she was serving with NTPC after her BTech from NIT Hamirpur, but she was not happy. She urged the students to be clear about their goal, its limitation and advantages.
'A guide to your future', The Hindu career guidance handbook was released by the guests.
Syed Sadat Pasha, UPSC coach and career counsellor of CIGMA India, spoke on the various career opportunities available in Arts, Commerce, and Science streams. He involved students in a short skit to make them realise the importance of motivation, energy and career planning.
Chartered accountant Manu Kumar Pujari spoke about the scope for commerce graduates. He quoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi who had said: 'The signature of the CA was more important than the signature of the PM'.
He told them about the various challenges in facing the CA examination and the joy gained in working as a CA.
S.B. Sangappa, national executive council member, Indian Society for Technical Education, and S. Shambhu Lingappa, regional director of VTU centre in Kalaburagi, spoke about choosing the best engineering courses and postgraduate education in engineering.
Dr. Sangappa asked students not to follow the herd mentality and to carve their own path. Dr. Lingappa spoke of the various courses offered by VTU in various campuses and the potential in emerging areas like Artificial Intelligence and machine learning. He asked them to follow their passion and not fall into the trap of courses marketed as 'trendy'.
Ramya Krishna P., CET counselling coordinator from the government polytechnic in Bidar, spoke about the seat selection process, the KEA website, and their new app.

Speaking about her educational qualification, Pragati finished her schooling from Meham, did MBBS from PGIMS Rohtak, and pursued MD in Radiodiagnosis at PGIMER Chandigarh. After her postgraduation, she worked as a Senior Resident at AIIMS Delhi and PGIMER Chandigarh for one year. After one year, she married Dr. Atul Verma. The couple is blessed with a son, named Rajvardhan Verma. After marriage, she worked in private and corporate hospitals in Kurukshetra as a Radiology Consultant while simultaneously preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination. As per a report of News18 Hindi, Dr. Pragati Verma started her UPSC preparation in May 2021 and subsequently appeared for the 2021 Preliminary exam a few months later. However, she narrowly missed qualifying by approximately 10 marks. She did not let it stop her from repeatedly strategizing her preparation and in her second attempt, passed Prelims, Mains, Interview, and got an All India Rank of 740. She belonged to the OBC category. She obtained 756 marks in the written examination and 171 marks in the personality test. Overall, she secured 927 marks in the UPSC Civil Services(Main) Examination, 2022. Her All India Rank(AIR) was 740. With an aim to be in the IAS, she sat for the UPSC 2023 exam and got AIR 355. She obtained 787 marks in the written examination and 175 marks in the personality test. Overall, she secured 962 marks in the UPSC Civil Services(Main) Examination, 2023. Her All India Rank(AIR) was 355. In 2023, Dr Pragati Verma obtained 2nd rank in the Haryana Civil Services (HCS), also securing All India Rank 740 in UPSC 2022-23. After her success in HCS, she joined the service and worked in the Ambala Division as an Officer on Special Duty to the Commissioner. According to OdishaTV, at the age of 31 and as a mother to a three-year-old son, Rani secured 355th rank in the UPSC exam, improving her performance from her previous attempt. Her father is a primary teacher, while her mother works in the health department. For added context, her father-in-law, R.C. Permanent library building nearing completion in Kilvelur taluk
After functioning from a temporary structure for over 60 years, the Kilvelur Taluk Branch Library is finally set to have a permanent building. Located near the Kilvelur Taluk Government Hospital, the new ground plus one building is under construction at an estimated cost of ₹1 crore. 'This was one of my key demands under the Ungal Thoguthiyil Mudhalvar initiative, and it was promptly approved by the State government,' said V.P. Nagai Maali, MLA of Kilvelur. He told The Hindu that the new building marks a significant upgrade from the existing setup, which lacked adequate space and essential infrastructure. He said the new library would be designed to cater to diverse users — from students to senior citizens — the upcoming library will feature modern amenities, including advanced computer facilities, a wide range of books and periodicals, and, notably, a dedicated study area for UPSC and TNPSC aspirants. The special provision for competitive exam preparation is expected to benefit students across Kilvelur and nearby areas. Mr. Maali said that among the taluk libraries in the district, the new Kilvelur facility will be one of the most modern, accessible, and academically oriented, enhancing both footfall and local interest in public learning spaces. 'This library will not only meet local needs but will also emerge as a hub for academic engagement in the region,' he added. Official sources said construction was progressing as scheduled with completion expected within six months.

Ahmedabad plane crash: DNA confirms identities of 247 of those killed
The identities of 247 persons who died in the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12 have been confirmed through DNA testing so far, The Hindu reported on Saturday. Among those identified, 238 persons were on board the aircraft, including 175 Indians, 52 British, seven Portuguese and one Canadian, The Indian Express reported. The bodies of 232 persons have also been handed over to their families till now, Civil Hospital Superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi told The Hindu. The families of eight victims have been asked to provide a sample of another relative for DNA testing after the initial tests did not yield a match, the newspaper quoted Dr Joshi as saying. On June 12, Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, which was en route to London's Gatwick airport from Ahmedabad, crashed just 33 seconds after taking off. This is being viewed as the world's worst aviation disaster in a decade. There were 242 people aboard the aircraft. One passenger survived with ' impact injuries '. Thirty-four persons were also killed on the ground after the plane crashed into the hostel building of the BJ Medical College and Hospital in Ahmedabad, according to Air India.
