A major crop in the region, mango cultivation spans 10,000 hectares in Mandya: DC

Deputy Commissioner Kumar on Monday said mango cultivation has expanded across approximately 10,000 hectares in Mandya district, and to support farmers with better market access, a Mango and Jackfruit Mela has been organised.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the 'Mango and Jackfruit Mela, Plant Expo, and Sales Fair – 2025', organised jointly by the district administration, zilla panchayat, and the Department of Horticulture.
Dr. Kumar highlighted that mango is one of the major horticultural crops in the region, with the district producing over 20,000 tonnes annually.
'The mela has been organised to ensure quality mangoes are made available to consumers at fair prices, to foster stronger farmer-consumer relationships, and to provide encouragement to mango growers,' he added.
Zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer K.R. Nandini said the mela is being held in the district after several years. Alongside the mango and jackfruit displays, a plant exhibition and sales event has also been arranged to provide high-quality fruit saplings to farmers and the general public, she added.
The mela features over 15 stalls, showcasing more than 40 varieties of mangoes brought by local farmers as well as growers from other districts. The focus is on promoting chemical-free and carbide-free fruits, the organisers said.
In addition, over 10 varieties of jackfruit are on display, drawing interest from consumers. The organisers have urged the public to visit the mela and make the most of this opportunity.
Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baladandi, Deputy Director of Horticulture Roopashree, and other senior officials were present.
The exhibition features popular varieties such as Badami, Raspuri, Mallika, Malgova, Sendura, Kesar, Sakkarebuthi, Imam Pasand, Totapuri, Langra, Rumani, Chilak Ras, Amlet, and Madanapalle — all of which attracted the visitors.
The mela also showcases more than 10 varieties of jackfruit, including Gubbi Bakke, Bakke, Cheluru Bakke, Ajji Halasu, Sakkare Pattana Onake, Gurugala Thota, and Chandra Halasu, each unique in flavor and texture, they said.
An array of grafted saplings and seedlings are being sold at government-approved prices at the expo. Varieties available include lemon, mango, guava (Allahabad Safeda), sapota (cricket ball), drumstick (PKM1), and arecanut, providing an opportunity for those looking to start or expand fruit cultivation.

Departments join hands to make Yoga Day a grand success

Staff from Police, Municipal Corporation, Fire, Health, Revenue and others played a pivotal role in organising the 'International Yoga Day' event successfully in the city on Saturday (June 21). An estimated 3.3 lakh people participated in the programme. What drew widespread appreciation was the seamless coordination among departments, which helped restore normalcy across the city swiftly after the event. While there were brief traffic snarls between Yendada and Venkojipalem, as a large number of buses departed at once after the programme concluded, the police, aided by real-time technology, swiftly eased the congestions. Traffic along many parts of the 28-km Beach Road stretch from Bheemunipatnam to RK Beach was reopened within minutes after the event to ease pressure on NH-16. Thousands of volunteers played a crucial role in managing the compartments and ensuring that participants received essential services during the programme. Nearly 12,000 police personnel were deployed to maintain a strict security blanket over the city. Police teams were on duty from as early as 1 a.m., with senior officers, including those of DCP and SP rank, stationed at key junctions to oversee operations. Drones were extensively used to monitor crowd movements and manage traffic. Over 12,000 staff from various other departments and district administration, worked overnight to see the smooth conduct of the programme. GVMC deployed around 4,000 sanitation workers who were instrumental in maintaining hygiene at the venue. Staff were stationed at each compartment from 3 a.m. onwards, promptly clearing waste and ensuring the area remained clean. Every compartment was equipped with separate bio-toilets for men and women, each attended by a dedicated sanitation worker to ensure cleanliness. Once the event concluded, sanitation teams quickly launched a massive clean-up drive. By afternoon, the entire Beach Road stretch had been restored to its original condition. Senior leaders from the TDP and the JSP lauded the local public elected representatives, especially the ground level party workers, in preparing and mobilising participants from every ward.

Century-old school struggles without permanent teachers despite good admissions

1 2 Mangaluru: The plight of the century-old Tenkayedapadavu Higher Primary School is different from that of usual govt schools in the district. Despite seeing good admissions, the school lacks permanent teachers. The aided school has been functioning without permanent teachers for the last two academic years. After the retirement of the headmaster, Krishna Naik, in May 2022, the govt did not appoint any teachers here, making it a teacher-less school since then. Currently, it is managed by guest teachers appointed by the SDMC and one through the Jnana Deepa programme. Prasad Kumar M, an SDMC member of the school, shared that the school will complete 100 years in 2026. In the past, the school had a total of over 500 students, which has now reduced to 54, studying from Class I to Class VII. "However, despite having a substantial number of admissions, the education department is unwilling to provide us with one or two permanent teachers.
