"American Nightmare" kidnapper Matthew Muller pleads guilty to 1993 kidnapping, sexual assault in Folsom

"American Nightmare" kidnapper Matthew Muller pleaded guilty on Wednesday to charges related to a 1993 cold case in which prosecutors said he forced two campers out of their tent and sexually assaulted one of them.
The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office said on Thursday that Muller, who was 16 at the time, used a gun and ordered two young campers out of their tent near Folsom Lake.
Prosecutors said "he tied the male up and carried the female away to sexually assault her."
The district attorney's office said its cold case, science and technology unit played a key role in linking Muller to the 32-year-old case. They added that Muller later admitted to the crime.
Muller was sentenced to 11 years to life in state prison, prosecutors said. This sentence will be served consecutively to his life sentences for a pair of home invasions in Santa Clara and his 40-year sentence for federal crimes relating to a 2015 case in Vallejo.
Earlier this year, Muller pleaded guilty to charges in connection with home invasions in Mountain View and Palo Alto in 2009.
In Mountain View, prosecutors said Muller broke into a female's home, attacked her, tied her up, made her drink a concoction of medications and told her he was going to rape her. The victims persuaded Muller against it.
Just a month later, he broke into a Palo Alto home where prosecutors said he bound and gagged a woman and forced her to drink Nyquil. He then assaulted her and was again persuaded to stop.
He pled no contest to two counts of forcible rape of Denise Huskins in 2015. Huskins was kidnapped from her Vallejo home in what police had thought was a hoax.

Arrest made after Miami Beach condo resident pistol-whipped during home invasion, police say

An arrest has been made in a Miami Beach condominium home invasion in which a man was pistol-whipped, and money and a phone were stolen, according to Miami Beach police. Investigators the same suspect committed an armed burglary shortly before that. According to police, on Tuesday, June 17, officers were sent to Flamingo Towers at 1508 Bay Road to check out reports of an armed robbery. A woman who lives in the building said she was walking to a trash chute when an armed man, who police identified as 31-year-old Brian Lopez of Hialeah, pulled a gun on her and demanded that she take him to her unit, according to police. Once there, Lopez allegedly threatened the woman, a person who lives with her (identified in the police report as J.K.), and someone who was staying with them. He demanded that they get on the ground and hand over their belongings, investigators said. "Initially, J.K. resisted the defendant's commands and refused to get on the ground. The defendant then pistol whipped J.K. by striking him on the top of his head, causing a minor laceration," according to the report. Investigators said J.K. was forced to transfer $1,500 via cell and Lopez stole one of their cellphones. He then allegedly demanded that they take him to their vehicle. When the group made it to the lobby, J.K. screamed for help and Lopez took off, according to the report. He was taken into custody a short time later. During the course of their investigation, police said they determined that Lopez had also committed another burglary in the building prior to this incident. In that incident, Lopez is accused of stealing a man's wallet, phone and keys to his unit. Lopez is facing one count of armed home invasion, three counts of armed robbery with a deadly weapon, and one count of armed burglary with battery. During his first court appearance on Friday, the judge found there was probable cause for the charges and ordered that he be held without bond.

For Democrats, handcuffs are the latest symbol of resistance to Trump

A growing number of Democratic officials are being arrested in tense situations with federal agents over immigration, raising their profiles in a party angry with President Donald Trump's policies. Images of Democratic officials bound in handcuffs, jostling in scrums with immigration officers or standing defiantly on courthouse steps have ricocheted across the internet in recent weeks, creating some new political battle lines in Trump's second term. New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, a mayoral candidate, was the latest Democratic elected official to be arrested after he tried to escort a defendant from his appearance at an immigration court this week.

FBI increases surveillance of Iran-backed operatives in US: source

The FBI is increasing its monitoring of Iran-backed operatives in the U.S. as President Donald Trump weighs involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict, a senior law enforcement source confirmed to Fox News Friday. The White House said Thursday Trump will make a decision on U.S. involvement in the conflict within two weeks. The monitoring reportedly includes surveillance of possible sleeper cells linked to the Tehran-backed terrorist organization Hezbollah, according to CBS News. The Lebanon-based terror group also got a clear warning from Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz not to join the conflict. The decision to increase monitoring comes just days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed Iran was plotting to assassinate Trump because the regime saw him as a threat to its nuclear program. "They want to kill him. He's enemy No. 1. He's a decisive leader. He never took the path that others took to try to bargain with them in a way that is weak, giving them basically a pathway to enrich uranium, which means a pathway to the bomb, padding it with billions and billions of dollars," the prime minister told Fox News' Bret Baier during a Sunday edition of "Special Report." While Trump has called for an "unconditional surrender," he has yet to decide whether to involve the U.S. in the conflict. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Thursday he would make a decision within two weeks. Critics from both sides of the aisle have called on the president not to get involved, while others see involvement as a necessity to protect American interests. On Friday, a U.S. official told Fox News the USS Nimitz, which left the South China Sea Monday, would arrive in the Middle East this weekend. The USS Carl Vinson has already been deployed for some time, meaning two U.S. aircraft carriers would be in the Middle East at the same time.
