Sundarayya remembered on 40th death anniversary
Vijayawada: Across the city, heartfelt tributes were paid to the prominent communist leader, founder of the South Indian communist movement, first Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, freedom fighter, and guiding force behind the heroic Telangana rebellion, Pucchalapalli Sundarayya, on his 40th death anniversary here on Monday.
Leaders and activists from the CPI (M) and various labour unions organised numerous gatherings, meetings, and programmes in different localities including Vambay Colony, Ajit Singh Nagar, Old City Gollapalem Gattu, Nehru Bomma Centre, Samarangam Chowk, Governor Peta, Besant Road, and the Hanuman Peta Municipal Vehicle Depot. CPI (M) state secretariat members Ch Babu Rao and other prominent leaders, including Donepudi Kasinath, participated in various commemoration events throughout Vijayawada.
At a programme organised by the Walkers Association at Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium, Babu Rao garlanded Sundarayya's portrait and distributed buttermilk to the walkers. In the Old City, Babu Rao inaugurated a medical camp and distributed medicines to patients. Joining Babu Rao and Kasinath at these events were other CPI (M) leaders such as Boi Satya Babu, B Ramana Rao, K Durga Rao, Gade Adilakshmi, Kondareddy, Subbareddy, Raju, Peer Saheb, and Lakshmana, along with prominent members of the Walkers Association, including V Sambireddy and Raja Kamal.
The leaders emphasised that Sundarayya served the people not only as a formidable fighter but also as the first Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. They described him as a true patriot who envisioned and presented the plan for a people's state in Visalandhra eight decades ago.

CPI(M) stages protest in Nagapattinam over water supply issues
Alleging irregular drinking water supply and contamination in several parts of the town, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a road blockade at Melakkoyttaivasal in Nagapattinam on Monday. The protest was led by CPI(M) town secretary K. Venkadesan, who said hundreds of residents across multiple municipal wards, including 27, 32, and 33, were affected by poor supply and quality of drinking water. In some areas, residents claimed that sewage water was getting mixed with drinking water or that water received through municipal taps carried a foul odour. 'In Velipalayam, for instance, many households receive water only once in four days. This is unacceptable, especially in a town with ongoing infrastructure projects,' Mr. Venkadesan said. Following talks with municipal officials, the protesters temporarily withdrew their agitation after officials assured prompt action. Official sources said some of the water supply disruptions were due to pipeline damage during ongoing Jal Jeevan Mission works. 'Water will be supplied through tankers to the affected areas in the interim. The Jal Jeevan works are expected to be completed within two months, by which time supply issues will be resolved,' an official said. EOM/

LDF's vote base intact, says M.V. Govindan
CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan has said that the Left Democratic Front (LDF)'s vote base in the Nilambur Assembly constituency remains intact, despite the by-election loss. He said that the United Democratic Front (UDF) received fewer votes compared to the previous election, contradicting claims of an upswing in public support for the Opposition. 'This is not a constituency where the LDF has historically been in a winning position. But we have still managed to retain our vote share,' he said, while addressing a press conference here on Monday. He asserted that the Left entered the fray knowing the odds. 'Even though we lost, our performance shows that our political base is solid and growing. When P.V. Anvar contested as an Independent candidate in the past, the combined vote share was higher. This time, even without that political alliance, we still maintained strong numbers.' Mr. Govindan also reiterated that the by-election did not reflect an anti-incumbency wave, as the Opposition failed to campaign effectively on such issues. 'If there had been genuine dissatisfaction with the State government, the UDF's vote count would have increased, and not decreased,' he argued. Alleging that the UDF's victory could be attributed to the backing of minority communal organisations, the CPI(M) leader warned that both majoritarian and minoritarian communalism were being allegedly used by the Congress-led coalition as electoral tools. The 'rainbow alliance' of communal forces could have serious social consequences in a secular State like Kerala, he cautioned. Shock treatment to LDF government: Antony Describing the UDF win as a 'shock treatment to the State government', senior Congress leader A.K. Antony said the change of regime has already begun, not in office, but in the hearts of the people. 'This is no ordinary win. Nilambur is a constituency where the LDF had won twice in a row. This result reflects the strong wave of anti-incumbency sweeping across the State, ' he said. Labelling the current LDF administration as merely a caretaker government, he added: 'technically, the Pinarayi Vijayan may remain in office, but politically and morally, the people have withdrawn their support.' Echoing Mr. Antony's sentiment, former Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala remarked Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan no longer holds the moral right to continue remain in power. 'This government has been reduced to a caretaker Cabinet. The people have clearly and completely rejected it,' he told mediapersons. Calling the by-election a 'semi-final' to the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, Mr. Chennithala said the UDF had emerged victorious in this crucial prelude, and is now confidently heading toward a win in the 'finals.'

Left questions U.S., Israel justification that Iran is developing nuclear weapons
Left parties have jointly condemned the U.S. airstrike on Iran, calling it a grave violation of Iran's sovereignty and the United Nations Charter. In a strongly worded statement, the district units of the CPI(M), the CPI and the SUCI(C) in Kalaburagi criticised the move as an act of imperialist aggression aimed at destabilising West Asia and asserting Western dominance over the region's strategic resources. The statement, released by CPI(M) district secretary K. Neela, CPI district secretary Mahesh Rathod K.R. and SUCI-C district secretary Veerabhadrappa, noted that the United States and Israel have justified the strike on the grounds of Iran developing nuclear weapons. However, it pointed out that Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi clearly stated on June 19 that there is no evidence of Iran making any systematic attempt to build nuclear weapons. And, even the U.S. intelligence agencies have admitted to lacking concrete proof, it added. Despite Iran being a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the U.S., having withdrawn from the agreement, continues to escalate tensions, the Left leaders said. They added that the June 12 Israeli airstrike on Iran was deliberately aimed at derailing any possible diplomatic talks between the two nations. While U.S. President Donald Trump earlier proposed a two-week window for dialogue, the joint attack reveals what they called a clear intention to provoke conflict in the region. The Left said that the actual aim behind such military action is to establish imperialist control over West Asia, destroy Iran's autonomy and secure access to vital resources. The leaders further said that the strike serves the interests of the global military-industrial complex and international capitalist forces which are struggling to recover from a prolonged crisis. The statement compared the current situation to the U.S. invasion of Iraq, also based on unverified claims, which was later proven baseless. The use of B-2 stealth bombers in the recent Iran attack mirrors the previous aggressive actions and shows a dangerous disregard for diplomacy, they said. Calling the U.S. position hypocritical, the Left leaders pointed out that it remains the only country to have used nuclear weapons, despite lecturing others about nuclear threats. The airstrike, they said, can severely intensify the conflict, threaten global peace and have disastrous consequences for ordinary people, particularly in countries like India, which are heavily dependent on oil imports and West Asian employment. The Left parties urged the Union government to immediately abandon its pro-U.S. and pro-Israel foreign policy stance and instead, join global efforts to halt the conflict. They announced that protest actions will be organised and appealed to peace-loving citizens of India to stand in solidarity with them denouncing imperialist aggression.
