Hull KR snatch late win over Warrington to end 40-year wait for trophy

Leader Live07-06-2025

The Super League leaders looked set to extend the agony as opponents Warrington entered the last three minutes with a four-point lead, before Tom Davies flopped onto Tyrone May's kick to haul the Robins level.
To a roar that could be heard back home in a presumably deserted east Hull, Lewis then stepped up to boot his side into the history books, completing an 8-6 win that erased the memory of their last-gasp agony against Leigh in 2023.
It was a remarkable ending to a contest that never quite caught fire and had seemed increasingly likely to be decided by a masterclass from Warrington scrum-half Marc Sneyd, for whom a record-equally Lance Todd trophy for man of the match will prove no consolation.

Sneyd's mastery of the tough conditions had forced the normally reliable Rovers into a series of errors and it was his boot on the stroke of half-time that set up the opening try for Josh Thewlis and looked set to hand Warrington their first Challenge Cup triumph since 2019.
Frustration had slowly mounted for Rovers, who mostly out-muscled their opponents in an grimly fought-out opening 40 but had only a two-point penalty from Lewis to show for their ascendency in the opening half-hour.
The conditions could cost Rovers dear when the otherwise impressive Joe Burgess dropped a slippery high kick from Sneyd in his own 10, and Wire seized on a stroke of fortune when Sneyd's kick ricocheted off a Rovers leg and out wide for Thewlis to score.
With fellow half-back and captain George Williams finding his way into the game after almost eight weeks out following ankle surgery, Sneyd was revelling in the extra responsibility, and Warrington could have gone ahead earlier when Adam Holroyd slapped down a loose ball only for his effort to be ruled out for stripping the ball in the build-up.

Jez Litten's introduction midway through the opening period turned the screw in Rovers' favour and Lewis capitalised on their best period of pressure by kicking them in front after being caught high by Ben Currie.
Warrington rode their luck to wrest the tie in their favour on the half-time hooter, then summoned a sterling defensive effort to keep out a Rovers repeat set as the favourites piled on the pressure after the break.
Sneyd's relentless probing with the boot continued to lift his side out of difficulty, while Rovers made more uncharacteristic errors as the pressure began to mount, captain Elliot Minchella guilty of squirting the ball out of his grasp at the play-the-ball.
With the minutes ticking down it looked like more agony for Rovers until Davies made ground on the right to serve up one last chance. From a subsequent penalty, May's kick was just missed by Warrington winger Arron Lindop, and Davies flapped it down to haul his side level.
Fittingly, it was left to home-grown hero Lewis to kick the decisive points and snatch Willie Peters' men their first trophy since 1985 with less than one and a half minutes left on the clock.

I'm a Rangers title-winner but when my son made history it was best night of my life – even though I cried like a BABY

The former Rangers midfielder was in the Olympic Stadium in Rome to see Bologna end a 51-year trophy drought by beating Inter Milan 1-0 on 14 May. "When I was going to the game in Rome, if I'm being honest I thought Inter Milan would win. "I looked at Inter and they had good players, and I thought the class players always turn up in big moments. "But what Bologna have is a real belief and togetherness and you saw that on the night. "I cried like a baby at the final whistle. "I got in a bit of a tiff with my older son Darren, because he was saying, 'It's in the bag'. "I'm not religious but I was looking up in the final few minutes. "When the final whistle went I burst out greetin' for five minutes. "It was the best footballing night of my life. "I won a few cups and league titles, but because his family and his pals were there - guys he'd been at Hamilton Grammar with - it was a special moment. Scot in Serie A Lewis Ferguson shows latest Italian talent with fluent interview "We got on the pitch at the end, which felt surreal. "I'm not a cuddler, I'm more a high-five type, but I gave him a hug and I wouldn't let him go. "He was like, 'C'mon da!' "It meant so much because of what he'd gone through with his injury. "But his mental attitude is so strong, he's a lot tougher than I ever was. "After the first five or six games he missed he was his own self - he was actually reassuring me that everything would be OK, that he was going to meet it head on. "So that made it even more special - it was a magical night. "When I go over to watch him I can go as a fan and enjoy myself." Ferguson revealed Bologna weren't the first Italian side to register an interest before Lewis' move in 2022. He said: "Cagliari and Lecce came in and there was a bit of interest in England as well, all before Bologna. "But when Bologna came in he told his agent to pursue that one. "He'd spoken to Aaron Hickey about Bologna and he'd raved about everything about the club and city, especially the food. 4 "Lewis likes his food so that was a factor in his decision. "Having been across, the restaurants are sensational." Former Ibrox midfielder Ferguson says Russell Martin will have to prove fans wrong as Rangers manager. Ferguson said the new Gers boss - who'll meet his squad for pre-season training tomorrow - has to focus on winning games rather than the way they do it. He said: "The word 'underwhelming' has been used a lot about the appointment. "He wouldn't have been the first choice for a lot of fans - but now he's in, we back him. "I wish him all the best. "I actually like what he's saying because throughout his career he's had to prove people wrong and he's going to have to prove a vast majority of the support wrong now. "You maybe hear about the style of football he likes to play, but for me, talking from a Rangers perspective, I want winning football. "I don't mind if we win a game 1-0 or 6-0, I just want to win games of football. "But the demands at a club like Rangers or Celtic, are that you win and win with style." Liverpool transfer stance on Marc Guehi as Crystal Palace face two options

Liverpool have been offered encouragement in their pursuit of Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi after the England international made his stance clear on his future Liverpool are interested in Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi - but only if the price is right. The England international is ready to leave Selhurst Park this summer. Guehi, 24, has just one year left on his deal with the FA Cup winners and is attracting attention from a number of Premier League clubs. Both the Reds and Arsenal are admirers, while Newcastle United have a long-standing interest. ‌ Liverpool have agreed a deal to sell Jarrell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen for an initial £30million. The England Under-21 international made 25 appearances in all competitions last term, but only made five Premier League starts, with only one of those - at Ipswich on opening day - coming before the title had been won. ‌ Quansah, currently with the England Under-21s at the European Championships in Slovakia, will complete his move to Germany when his participation at the tournament is over. Liverpool bosses are keen for Quansah to go and get regular football, which will be on offer under new Bayer boss Erik ten Hag, with the Warrington-born defender set to replace Jonathan Tah, who joined Bayern Munich. Interestingly, Liverpool have negotiated a buy-back clause in the deal. But it leaves the champions, who have already splashed a potential British record £116m on Florian Wirtz and a further £29m apiece on Jeremie Frimpong and Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili - with £40m Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez to come - actively looking to bolster their centre-back ranks. With Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk both in situ as the club's first choice partnership, the priority is a young centre-back with high potential. It has been a similar case in each of the last two summers, with Chelsea's Levi Colwill targeted in 2023 after impressing on loan at Brighton, and Leny Yoro emerging last summer before joining Manchester United. Dean Huijsen was of interest this summer before heading to Real Madrid for £50m instead. However, Guehi offers an intriguing alternative. While he doesn't exactly fit the mould of a young centre-back - given he turns 25 next month, boasts a wealth of Premier League experience and is already a senior England international - the Reds are keeping an eye on developments with the ex-Chelsea man. Given his quality, leadership capabilities, homegrown status and the uncertainty of Konate's long-term future - his contract is up next summer too - he certainly fits the bill. ‌ Much of whether he ends up at Anfield will depend on Palace. They rejected four offers from Newcastle last summer, with figures hitting in excess of £60m. That's a number Liverpool don't want to go to - particularly with the prospect of getting him for nothing in 12 months time. With an extension very unlikely, Palace must either sell now or face losing him for nothing in 2026. ‌ The Eagles are negotiating a deal with Sporting Lisbon - potentially heading towards the £40m mark - for Ousmane Diomande as a potential replacement, but head coach Oliver Glasner wouldn't mind having both available as they look to balance the Premier League and European football next season. As such, Palace and Guehi are waiting to see what offers come their way. And while Guehi is understood to be keen on a move to the champions, he's also aware that he needs to be playing regularly ahead of the World Cup next summer.
