Mark Wood hoping to play a part in England's Test series against India
Mark Wood is on the 'comeback trail' as the England fast bowler revealed he is optimistic of a Test return against India this summer.
The 35-year-old was expected to miss the entirety of the marquee five-match series after undergoing knee surgery in March, the latest in a long line of injury setbacks.
But the Durham quick says he is back bowling in the nets and harbours hopes he could return in the final Test against Shubman Gill's India, which is set to begin on July 31 at the Kia Oval.
'I have just started bowling – very lightly – but I am on the comeback trail now officially,' Wood said on the BBC's Test Match Special.
'I am hoping still to play a part in this series. I am still targeting maybe the last Test.
'Anything before that is probably a bit too soon. The last Test I might not get there but at the minute that is still my focus, that I might play a part.'
Wood's ability to hit breakneck speeds of up to 97mph mark him out as an invaluable asset and, if he stays fit, he is likely to be crucial to England's bid to regain the Ashes in Australia later this year.
He is among a lengthy list of pacemen currently on the sidelines, with Olly Stone out for the summer and Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson missing the first Test at Headingley, which started on Friday.

Marc Guéhi will not be rushed into a decision on his future and is prepared to see out the final year of his contract at Crystal Palace if the right move does not materialise this summer. Palace are looking to cash in on the England defender, who is a target for Liverpool, Newcastle and Tottenham, but there is a possibility of the club losing one of their biggest assets on a free transfer next year. Guéhi, who has no intention of signing an extension, remains open-minded about his next destination and a big consideration for the 24-year-old is making sure that he has plenty of playing time next season. The former Chelsea centre-back, who played an integral role in Palace winning the FA Cup, needs to safeguard his place in the England squad before the 2026 World Cup. That means there is an obvious benefit in joining a club who can offer Guéhi a quick route into their starting XI. Liverpool have emerged as strong contenders to sign Guéhi and could bid for him once they sell Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen for £30m. A potential stumbling block, however, is that Liverpool still have the outstanding duo of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté as their first-choice pairing in central defence. Van Dijk, 33, has extended his contract with the Premier League champions and is showing no sign of slowing down. The sale of Quansah will leave Liverpool short of defensive cover. The 22-year-old centre-back made 25 appearances for Arne Slot's last season and can also play at right-back. Konaté is entering the final year of his deal and has struggled with injuries at times. Joe Gomez, another of Liverpool's defensive options, has been out since February with a hamstring injury. Guéhi will face a big decision if Liverpool follow up their interest in him by offering enough for Palace to sell. A chance to join the best team in England and work with Slot would be hard to turn down. At the same time there are indications that clubs who can immediately guarantee Guéhi regular football retain a good chance of signing him. Newcastle tried to buy Guéhi last summer, only to be put off by Palace's asking price of around £70m, and they remain in the mix after qualifying for the Champions League. Their current options at centre-back include three players in their 30s – Dan Burn, Fabian Schär and Jamaal Lascelles – and the 25-year-old Sven Botman, who missed much of last season through injury. Spurs, who have qualified for the Champions League, had an offer of £55m plus £15m in add-ons rejected in January. There seems little prospect of Chelsea following up preliminary interest in Guéhi. Guéhi staying at Palace for another year before leaving for nothing has not been ruled out. He can speak to foreign clubs about signing a pre-contract from January. For Palace, there is a question of making sure their demands remain realistic this summer. Interested clubs are unlikely to want to overpay for a player who is entering the final year of his contract.

England stage fightback against India after Rishabh Pant's stylish century
Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah lived up to their box office billings but England battled back with ball and bat against India in the first Rothesay Test. Pant became India's third centurion of the innings with a swashbuckling 135 – following first-day tons from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill – but India collapsed from 430 for three to 471 all out. A clatter of wickets either side of lunch on day two was followed by a near hour-long rain delay, after which Bumrah lit up a gloomy Headingley with an astonishing new-ball burst under the floodlights. Zak Crawley perished in the first over of the reply, looking to play to leg but dumbfounded by late movement as he edged to slip, while Bumrah might also have accounted for Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope. As it was, the pair weathered the onslaught – in which nigh-on every Bumrah delivery was an event – and tucked into India's other bowlers to lift England to 107 for one at tea, trailing by 364. Duckett was dropped on 15 by the usually dependable Ravindra Jadeja at backward point while both the left-handed opener and Pope edged between third slip and gully. At the other end Mohammed Siraj was ransacked for 23 from his first three overs while Prasidh Krishna was ineffective, with Duckett and Pope pressing the accelerator in Bumrah's absence. Siraj had a much better second spell and might have had Pope on 34, but an lbw appeal was turned down and a review showed the ball was only trimming the top of the stumps as luck went England's way. Duckett won the race to fifty, ending the session on 53 not out, with the under-fire Pope unbeaten on 48. India held sway on 359 for three overnight after being asked to bat first and Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse again struggled to make an impact as Gill and Pant stretched the tourists' lead. While Gill bedded in, Pant went through the gears and went after Shoaib Bashir, greeting his first ball of the day with a paddle for four then a huge hit for six in the same over to move into the 90s. Pant brought up a seventh Test ton in style with a one-handed six off Bashir before removing his helmet and gloves and celebrating the achievement with a somersault. Gill sought to get to 150 in similarly buccaneering fashion but found only Josh Tongue in the deep to depart for 147, setting in motion England's recovery. Nair's first Test innings for India since 2017 was a brief affair as a drive off England captain Ben Stokes was excellently pouched by his deputy Pope, diving full length to his left. Tongue then took centre stage. Having been curiously overlooked up until 20 minutes before lunch, he jagged one back into Pant, who shuffled across his crease but offered no stroke and was pinned leg-before. After Shardul Thakur nicked off to give Stokes his fourth wicket, Tongue made short work of the tail. Having leaked 75 off 16 wicketless overs on Friday, he claimed four for 11 from overs on Saturday.
