Three-time world champion Mao Asada inspired countless individuals during her decorated career as a figure skater.
Now, eight years after her retirement from competition, the 2010 Olympic silver medalist aims to give back to the sport as a mentor for athletes who want to follow in her footsteps.
The Kinoshita Mao Academy is her new ambitious project, and it is set to open on August 1.
In November 2024, Mao Rink Tachikawa Tachihi opened in Tachikawa, a city in western Tokyo. The state-of-the-art facility gave Mao a home base to help develop future generations of skaters.
"I will take this new step forward as a coach," Asada told a news conference in Tokyo on Thursday, June 12, The Yomiuri Shimbun reported. "My dream is to train those who will go on to become world-class skaters.
At her new skating academy, Mao's focus will be coaching young students.
The initial plan is for the 34-year-old to begin working with roughly 10 students between the ages of 5-9, multiple media outlets reported.
Outlining her approach in her new occupation as a full-time coach, the national icon said, "I'm taking a new step, [and] I want to instruct each skater carefully one-on-one," Kyodo News reported.
With that in mind, she added that her goal is to "develop skaters who can be world No 1." Mao Asada speaks to reporters on June 12. (KYODO)
As she embarks on her coaching career, Mao said she's eager to provide instruction to young skaters.
"This will be my first experience, so I want to teach while giving careful thought to the various aspects of my job," the Nagoya native said, according to NHK. "I believe that you cannot work hard if you do not love skating. So no matter what happens, I will try not to lose my love for skating."
The six-time Japan national champion recalled being inspired by her former coaches as she looks ahead to her new work.
"When I was a skater, I had many coaches who helped me, and I want to remember to love skating as much as they did," Mao was quoted as saying by NHK.
Mao has participated in ice shows in the years following her retirement from competitive skating. But she revealed she isn't planning to be involved in ice shows again anytime soon, saying, "I don't have any ice shows lined up at the moment."
Added Mao, "I want to focus all my energy on the academy first." New York Mets pitcher Kodai Senga reacts after injuring his right hamstring in the sixth inning against the Washington Nationals on June 12 in New York. (AP/via KYODO)
New York Mets right-hander Kodai Senga injured his right hamstring in the sixth inning of a game against the visiting Washington Nationals on Thursday, June 12.
The injury occurred when Senga covered first base in the sixth inning. On CJ Abrams' grounder, Mets first baseman Pete Alonso's throw to Senga forced the pitcher to jump to catch it.
Abrams was out on the play, and Senga left the game after landing awkwardly.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters that the pitcher felt pain in his hamstring as he moved toward first base, according to The Associated Press.
"I talked to [Alonso] right away as soon as the inning was over ― I went up to him and I was like hey, man, this is baseball, it happens," Mendoza was quoted as saying by The Associated Press. "And then Senga went in, he sent the translator and basically told him, hey, I felt it on the step before the jump, so tell him not to worry about it." Senga allowed just two hits in 5⅔ scoreless innings. He walked one and struck out five. The 32-year-old is the MLB leader in ERA (1.47).
As a result of his hamstring strain, Senga is scheduled to receive an MRI on Friday to determine the precise extent of the injury, Mendoza told reporters.
Senga will be placed on the injured list.

The Urawa Reds are getting ready for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup (June 15-July 13) in the United States. And even before its first game, pride is a driving force for the J.League club.
"In order to tell the world how wonderful the J.League is, we need to produce a good result," Reds goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa said, according to Kyodo News. "Earning at least a point in the opener is the most important thing and we want to focus on that [for now]."
Urawa faces Argentina's River Plate on Tuesday, June 17 (Wednesday 4 AM JST kickoff) in its Group E opener in Seattle. There are eight four-team groups for the Club World Cup's group stage throughout the United States.
After the Reds play River Plate, they take on 2010 CWC winner Inter Milan of Italy on Saturday, June 21 (Sunday 4 AM JST kickoff, also in Seattle).
Then, on Wednesday, June 25 (Thursday 10 AM JST) at the iconic Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, Urawa meets Mexico's Monterrey in the teams' final Group E match.
FIFA, soccer's world governing body, increased the tournament to 32 teams for the 2025 event. It marked a massive increase in size.
Urawa earned a fourth-place finish (among seven teams) at the 2023 Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia.
In an April interview with FIFA.com, Reds manager Maciej Skorza spoke about his excitement for the upcoming tournament.
"It is an incredible feeling to take part in the FIFA Club World Cup held in this format ― a first in football history," the Polish boss said. "We are all extremely excited and it will certainly be an unforgettable experience in our football careers." Phillies surge past Mets with six-run seventh inning, claim first place in NL East

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bryson Stott hit a bases-clearing triple in a six-run seventh inning and the Philadelphia Phillies surged past the slumping New York Mets into first place in the NL East with a 10-2 victory on Friday night. Nick Castellanos homered for the Phillies, who opened the three-game set between division rivals with their eighth win in their last nine games. Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil homered for New York, which has lost seven straight. Reliever Reed Garrett (2-3) started the seventh for the Mets but failed to retire any of the five batters he faced after opening the frame by giving up doubles to Brandon Marsh and Trea Turner. Alec Bohm's RBI single put Philadelphia in front 4-2, ending Garrett's night. Justin Garza then surrendered an RBI single to Castellanos before Stott's drive off the wall in left-center. After Phillies starter Zack Wheeler could only get through five scoreless innings, New York took advantage against Taijuan Walker. Alonso opened the sixth by hitting a 90-mph cutter into the batter's eye in center for his 18th of the season. McNeil tied it with a drive to right. After Walker got an out and allowed a single, Tanner Banks (2-0) came in and blanked the Mets over 1 2/3 strong innings. Key Moment J.T. Realmuto followed Castellanos closely home on Stott's hit, sliding safely to the plate at nearly the same time. US flag football star Ashlea Klam and Houston Texans push for recognition of sport for Texas girls

HOUSTON (AP) — When U.S. Women's Flag National Team member Ashlea Klam was in high school in Texas, her school wouldn't let her participate in signing day, even though she had earned a scholarship to play flag football collegiately. 'It was extremely hurtful knowing all of the work that I put in and my high school didn't want to celebrate it,' she recalled this week. Klam hopes other girls don't have to experience what she did, and she's working with the Houston Texans Foundation and the franchise's She's Next movement as the Texans' global flag ambassador to help promote female participation in the sport in Texas and beyond. This week, as the U.S. women's and girls teams assembled in California for USA Football's Summer Series, Klam and the rest of the players were celebrated, receiving curated gift boxes from the Texans and foundation vice president Hannah McNair. The boxes featured items players had requested, including headgear, gloves, sports bras, arm sleeves, slides and jumpsuits, all adorned with the She's Next slogan and the Texans' logo. 'We absolutely loved it,' said Klam, who has led Keiser University to the NAIA flag football national championship game the past two seasons. 'It was things that true flag football players want. It's really exciting to know that we are being seen and that we are being heard, and especially from organizations like the Houston Texans, and knowing that they really stepped up to make all of the (teams) and women who are part of USA Football feel really special.' Men's and women's flag football will be Olympic sports for the first time in Los Angeles in 2028. McNair and the Texans foundation began focusing on girls' flag football in 2023 and she's been thrilled to see growth in the sport among school-age girls in the last two years. 'I'm so excited about it,' she said. 'The growth of the sport, the excitement, the empowerment it gives females being able to play football. We know what it can do to communities and for individuals but pushing that towards scholarships and educational opportunities for these female athletes is something that we're really focused on.' High school girls' flag football is currently sanctioned as a varsity sport in 15 states, and McNair and the Texans are working with policymakers in the state to push Texas to sanction it. For now, the team's girls flag football program includes more than 2,000 high school athletes in Houston, Austin and El Paso. McNair attended the championships in Houston and El Paso recently and loved seeing the impact the game is making. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. 'It is emotional and also so moving and inspiring to see these athletes and the excitement they have on the field with their teammates, the celebrations,' she said. 'To me it's the ultimate team sport, and to be able to push this sport forward with the interest of all these high school girls and young female athletes has been something that continues to help push us to this next step of trying to get it sanctioned here in Texas.' That's something Klam hopes happens soon so that girls playing flag football in the state will have opportunities she lacked. 'I think it's crazy that I've been able to represent my country at this level, but I was never able to represent my high school,' she said. 'So having that sanctioned and giving so many more girls the opportunity and allowing them to feel like this is something that we're serious about and you have a future, that would would mean a lot to me.' ___ AP NFL:

Stuart Skinner's future with Oilers a key consideration for GM Bowman

So, will Stu Skinner be back in net next season as the No. 1? Article content Or will he be sharing the crease in a 1 and 1a scenario, but not with the good soldier Calvin Pickard as a partner? Maybe they trade for somebody who is or was a starter. Article content Article content Enquiring minds want to know, and they're all wearing Edmonton Oilers jerseys. Article content There's this feeling that fixing the goaltending here is as simple as looking up plumbers on Google and having somebody come by to fix the leaking toilet. Article content Article content It's not. Article content Article content For sure, Skinner was outplayed by Sergei Bobrovsky in the final against Florida, but Bob's arguably on a career path to the Hall of Fame with his two Cup rings and his two Vezina trophies, plus his 445 regular-season wins, top 10 all-time. Article content Skinner has only played three NHL seasons (189 regular-season games, 50 in the playoffs), not Bob's 15 years (777 regular-season games and 117 in the playoffs). But he did get the Oilers to the last two Cup finals, with ample help from Pickard along the way this spring. He was definitely better than the ballyhooed Jake Oettinger in the Western Conference final against Dallas, not just this year, but last spring. Article content So, how bad can Skinner be? He wasn't the reason the Oilers lost to Florida this June; they're just too deep, reminding people of the early 80s New York Islanders with their talent and their wear-you-down philosophy of play. Article content Article content Again, Skinner is a good goalie who is in the mix for one of the three Olympic spots next February. But, there still could be a different configuration in net, like maybe somebody to push Skinner for playing time. Article content Article content 'I don't want to single the goaltending out,' said Bowman, who balked at trading for goaltending help at the deadline, maybe because he won three Cups in Chicago with Corey Crawford and Antti Niemi in net, so good goalies but not great ones. Article content But, he knows the narrative in this city, where Skinner, an accountable, nice guy with lots of ability, gave up two goals in the first period of all five starts in the final series after outplaying Oettinger and Hill, specifically, in heavyweight matchups earlier. Article content 'It's something we'll investigate this summer — what's the best path moving forward for our team. It's hard to predict where that's going to go. We have to have lots of conversations about what other teams are looking to do,' said Bowman, who did concede that the forward group and the goalies would be evaluated most deeply.
