Embracing Powertrain Diversity, GWM Continues to Enhance Clean Diesel Capabilities for Off-Roading

BAODING, CHINA - Media OutReach Newswire - 15 June 2025 - While new energy vehicles continue to gain momentum worldwide, efficient diesel power remains a compelling choice—especially in challenging off-road environments where torque, range, and reliability are critical. GWM is advancing diesel technology with a focus on refinement, performance, and real-world usability. At the recent GWM Thailand Diesel Day event, the brand demonstrated how modern diesel can deliver a clean, quiet, and highly capable driving experience.
Traditional trade-offs—torque versus comfort, power versus fuel economy—are disappearing. With today's drivers demanding both performance and efficiency, GWM's TANK 300 Diesel delivers on all fronts.
In Thailand, the TANK 300 Diesel has earned high praise for its impressive torque (480N·m at just 1,500rpm), extended driving range (up to 1,200km), and smooth, quiet ride. As one reviewer noted, 'It drives like a gasoline SUV—quiet and refined—until you need the torque. Then, it just powers through.'
This refined balance comes from GWM's 2.4T diesel engine, combined with over 200 NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) enhancements—bringing idle noise down to just 65dB, comparable to gasoline-powered vehicles. The result: urban comfort with true off-road muscle.
GWM's advanced combustion technology—featuring columnar combustion chambers and dual tangential air ducts—cuts fuel consumption to under 7.3L/100km, making long journeys more economical and environmentally responsible.
Guided by its 'All Scenarios, All Powertrains, All Users' strategy, GWM's TANK 300 Diesel demonstrates that diesel, when done right, is still a powerful, relevant solution to real-world needs. In markets like Thailand, clean diesel has a promising future.
More than just a product launch, GWM's achievement reflects a user-centered innovation that sets a new benchmark. The message to drivers is clear: more power, fewer compromises, and a brand that truly listens.

Volkswagen plotting ID 2 R with 400bhp and in-wheel motors

Volkswagen is exploring plans for a high-performance ID 2 R, which could be its first model to use in-wheel motors as part of a new four-wheel drive system. The hot hatchback is claimed to be part of a broader engineering initiative, led by the R performance brand, to explore the potency and torque-vectoring potential of hub motors. If given the green light, the ID 2 R would sit above the already announced ID 2 GTI – and potentially even be pitched against the mega-powered Renault 5 Turbo 3E. The drivetrain under consideration for the ID 2 R retains the front-mounted electric motor and power electronics of its GTI sibling but adds two independently controlled electric hub motors within the rear wheels. This would provide a significant boost in performance and four-wheel drive without compromising boot space. Volkswagen officials have confirmed the ID 2 will make its debut in 2026, with the heavily related ID 2 crossover arriving in 2027. Sources at the firm's Wolfsburg HQ in Germany suggest the potent R version is being developed with input from a technical partner based in the Balkans that is believed to specialise in lightweight, high-output in-wheel motor systems. Combined with predictive torque distribution, brake-based yaw control and dynamic drive modes, the system is claimed to offer genuine hyper-hatch performance and agility without the bulk and cost of a conventional dual-motor set-up. However, Autocar has also been told that it would not require expensive modifications to the ID 2's 'MEB Plus' platform to accommodate a second, rear-mounted motor, should VW opt to offer the same performance from a more conventional setup instead. The smallest MEB-based car currently available with dual motors is the Skoda Elroq vRS, which is 400mm longer than the ID 2 concept. With the front-wheel-drive ID 2 GTI set to deliver as much as 286bhp, it is expected that the ID 2 R will deliver in the region of 400bhp or more from its trio of electric motors. Volkswagen's R division is understood to be focusing on minimising the weight penalty, ensuring the ID 2 R remains relatively light and responsive by class standards while delivering the traction and acceleration expected of a four-wheel-drive model – hence the experimentation with lighter in-wheel motor technology. The target is to match or exceed the performance and handling of today's warmed-up GTX EVs, such as the ID 3 GTX, but with a smaller footprint and at a more affordable price. R division insiders hint that the ID 2 R could receive bespoke bodywork, chassis tuning and interior elements to distinguish it from the upcoming ID 2 GTI. Though not officially confirmed, it is seen as a spiritual successor to the 151mph Polo R WRC hot hatch of 2012 and a showcase for affordable electric performance technology. The implications for the rest of the MEB Plus line-up are equally significant. By packaging the rear drive components entirely within the back wheels, VW can extend four-wheel-drive capability to compact crossovers and SUVs without packaging compromises. That could pave the way for the ID 2 crossover to be offered as a baby off-roader, like the upcoming dual-motor Renault 4 and Fiat Grande Panda. This approach could also allow four-wheel-drive variants of future Volkswagen electric models, including the electric Golf – based on the next-gen SSP architecture – to retain the same boot volume, floor height and interior flexibility as the front-driven derivatives. It is also claimed to help streamline platformsharing, giving Volkswagen the ability to build front-, rear- and four-wheel-drive models on a single architecture with minimal hardware divergence. ]]>

Budget to entice companies to invest in major projects

A multi-million dollar innovation fund is expected to make Australia's most populous state a more attractive place to invest and start a business. The 2025/26 NSW budget, to be handed down on Tuesday, will allocate nearly $80 million in funding to make the state the best place to innovate, connect with investors and scale a business. The funding includes $38.5 million for Australia's largest technology and innovation hub, Tech Central, and $20 million for emerging technology commercialisation to help boost growth in the housing and energy sectors. In 2024, NSW accounted for 65 per cent of Australia venture capital investment, and is home to five out of eight "unicorn" companies, privately held companies valued at over $1 billion. Tuesday's budget will also include $17 million to set up an Investment Delivery Authority. The authority will be tasked with helping to accelerate approvals for major projects across all industries, including advanced technologies and energy. Major projects to be considered by the authority may include hotels, data centres, renewable energy projects and commercial developments. Too many major projects from the private sector were getting bogged down in red tape, Premier Chris Minns said. "Our state is open for business and this change will encourage more people to bring their best ideas to life in NSW, all backed by our government," he said. Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said the government was creating a way to address blockages, speed up the process and ensure NSW was properly open for business. "The Investment Delivery Authority is the turbocharger to drive economic growth across the state," he said.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz S 580e Is Smooth and Silent, Stylish and Speedy

Not that the S 580e is a slouch, of course. Powered by a combination of a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six gas engine and an electric motor fed by a 28.6-kWh battery pack, the plug-in hybrid S-Class delivers 510 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, enough to scoot this land yacht to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds. On its own, the electric motor makes 148 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque, which is enough to get the S 580e up and moving at city speeds without needing to fire the engine, and this is truly where the electrified S-Class feels best. It makes me wish Mercedes made a proper fully electric S-Class, rather than the meh-tastic EQS sedan that looks like a used bar of soap, Apple Magic Mouse or medicinal suppository (take your pick). Riding on 20-inch wheels and a cushy adaptive air suspension, the S 580e soaks up potholes and smooths out even the most obtrusive speed bumps. It does so without being wallowy or feeling disconnected, too. Switch over to Sport mode and the S-Class hunkers down and corners with confidence, the electric motor providing ample assist for shooting out of a corner on a winding lakeside road.
