
The rise of agentic AI and what it means for ANZ enterprise
As much as we don't want to think about it or admit it, a lot of our time can be spent on tedious, repetitive tasks that eat away at our precious time and mental energy, preventing us from focusing on the truly strategic work—but agentic AI is changing that equation, and research has found that this technology is rapidly taking off in Australia and New Zealand. According to a study from YouGov and Salesforce, 69% of ANZ c-suite executives who prioritise AI are focused on implementing agentic AI over the next 12 months, and 38% say that they're already implementing the technology.
Agentic AI is seen by many as the new frontier of AI innovation, and that's because these agents can automate tedious or repetitive processes without direct prompting from a human user, which opens up a wide array of possible applications. An AI agent could, for example, provide expert-level advice to customers, perform administrative work for finance or HR departments, or execute complex data analysis, among other potential use cases. In order to adopt AI agents securely and efficiently, however, organisations across ANZ and beyond will have to do more to secure and optimize the data that powers agentic tools. Without strong data security and governance, agents won't work effectively or securely, which can harm productivity and create unnecessary risk.
What is agentic AI? Setting the record straight
What is an AI agent? Microsoft defines it as an "[application] that automate and executes business processes, acting as [a] digital colleague to assist or even perform tasks on behalf of users or teams." Salesforce, meanwhile, calls it a "type of artificial intelligence (AI) that can operate independently, making decisions and performing tasks without human intervention," and IBM calls it "an artificial intelligence system that can accomplish a specific goal with limited supervision."
While these definitions might not be perfectly identical (and there's definitely been some healthy debate in the industry!), the core concept is consistent: an AI agent is an AI system that can act intelligently and autonomously, without direct, continuous prompting from a human. It's this autonomy and advanced reasoning power that truly sets them apart from AI assistants like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Microsoft 365 Copilot.
Think of it this way: an assistant helps you write, while an agent writes the report for you. This opens up a world of possibilities: expert-level customer advice, automated administrative work for finance or HR, or even executing complex data analysis on its own. For example, just this week I asked an AI Agent to put together a report for me comparing software product features against an international standard and then provide suggestions for additional functionality. This saved me about three days of research and I could spend that valuable time analysing the results.
Why stronger data governance makes better, safer AI agents
Agentic AI has unique benefits, but it also presents unique risks, and as more organisations adopt agentic AI, they're discovering that robust data governance— the establishment of policies, roles, and technology to manage and safeguard an organization's data assets—is essential when it comes to ensuring that these systems function securely and effectively. That's why, according to a recent study from Drexel University, 71% of organizations have data governance program, compared to 60% in 2023.
Effective governance is on the rise because it helps address critical AI-related security and productivity issues like preventing data breaches and reducing AI-related errors. Without strong data governance measures, agents may inadvertently expose sensitive information or make flawed autonomous decisions. With strong data governance measures, organisations can proactively safeguard their data by implementing comprehensive governance policies and deploying technologies to monitor AI runtime environments. This not only enhances security but also ensures that agentic AI tools operate optimally, delivering significant value with minimal risk.
Key elements of this approach include:
• Securing data without a human in the loop: Agents rely on the data they consume and often don't have a human in the mix to ensure that data is consumed and dispensed correctly. This means that it's crucial that this data is accurately categorized to ensure relevance and mitigate risks. When a human isn't in the loop, strong data governance measures can step in to ensure that AI agents can access or repeat sensitive data.
• Preventing errors and breaches: Robust governance frameworks help agents avoid "hallucinations"—instances where AI generates incorrect information—and protect sensitive content from accidental exposure by improving the quality of AI data. This significantly lowers the chances of autonomous agents making harmful decisions.
To grapple with these and other AI-related challenges, Gartner now recommends that organisations apply its AI TRiSM (trust, risk, and security management) frameworks to their data environments. Data and information governance are a key part of this framework, along with AI governance and AI runtime inspection and enforcement technology. The very existence of this new framework underscores the immense potential—and the equally immense risks—of Agentic AI.
Securing the future with AI
The future of work is here, and it's powered by Agentic AI. While the wave of adoption is clearly building across ANZ, organisations must prioritise robust data security and governance. This isn't just about managing risk; it's about optimising the data that fuels these powerful tools, ensuring they work effectively and securely. Organisations cannot afford to be left behind so more needs to be done to ensure risks are managed and this powerful tooling will be effective.

Reality check: Lenovo's enterprise predictions for 2025 under the microscope
Organisations in Australia and New Zealand are accelerating their adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), data centre infrastructure, and sustainable practices while maintaining a strong focus on cybersecurity. This is according to a mid-year review of technology predictions originally made by Kumar Mitra, Managing Director and Regional General Manager, CAP & ANZ, Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group, for 2025. AI adoption and ROI The latest data reveals that AI investment in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) has increased fourfold over the year, outpacing the Asia-Pacific average of a 3.3-fold rise. However, despite this surge in spending, 58% of organisations in the region are still in the planning or evaluation stages of AI deployment. The primary barrier to further adoption is the challenge of demonstrating a clear return on investment (ROI). While generative AI accounts for 38% of AI spend in ANZ, most enterprises are opting for a strategic, long-term approach that aims to ensure measurable and sustainable outcomes from their investments. Cybersecurity focus The review confirms that cybersecurity has become a board-level topic driven by rising threat levels and stricter regulation. Implementation of new Australian laws, including mandatory reporting for ransomware payments and the establishment of a Cyber Incident Review Board, has re-emphasised the need for robust cyber defences. The ongoing 2023–2030 Cyber Security Strategy underpins cross-sector collaboration and targets increased resilience and faster incident response. Enterprises are responding by investing in layered defences and reinforcing governance to counter increasingly complex, AI-enabled attacks. "With the rise of high-profile data breaches in 2024, cybersecurity will remain a critical area of focus for businesses in Australia. Specifically, the spotlight will be on securing data, after Lenovo's 2024 Smarter Data Management Playbook found that data security was the number one priority among IT and business decision-makers. Increased government regulations, such as the Cyber Security Bill proposed in Australia, are pushing companies to enhance their security measures, while also holding them accountable for losses and damage resulting from security failures. This growing awareness is prompting businesses to invest more heavily in cybersecurity and data protection solutions, implementing stricter processes around accessing and securing data. As the volume of data continues to increase, due to growing demand in services such as artificial intelligence (AI), the challenge lies in maintaining a robust and cost-effective data infrastructure. It is essential that businesses begin building resilient ecosystems before regulations are enforced to avoid rushed implementations that increase the risk of vulnerabilities during transition. Lenovo helps businesses do this by providing a comprehensive range of cyber security services, from Security Assessments through to Managed Detection and Cyber Resiliency as-a-service." Sustainability drives infrastructure decisions Sustainability has become central to infrastructure strategy as energy consumption rises due to expanding AI workloads. Industry players are prioritising energy-efficient systems not only for compliance but as a lever for competitiveness and resilience. An example cited is Sharon AI's Supercluster – developed with Lenovo – which aims to be one of the nation's most energy-efficient AI deployments. Organisations are looking beyond compliance, considering the broader performance and competitive advantages associated with sustainable infrastructure. "As reliance on digital services and artificial intelligence (AI) grows, the energy demands of data centres across the APAC region are rising exponentially. Estimates suggest that AI will add 3 per cent to global electricity demands. In 2025, we will see increased scrutiny on businesses to act in an environmentally sustainable manner, with some markets introducing legislation imposing tighter restrictions on the disclosure of climate risks. For data centres, the challenge will be balancing the need for innovation and scalability with its carbon footprint. Governments and businesses alike will be focusing more on sustainable infrastructure, leveraging new advancements in energy-efficient cooling systems, virtualised server environments and sustainable building materials. For example, Lenovo is taking liquid cooling mainstream with its Neptune Liquid Cooling Ecosystem, enabling up to a 40% reduction in power consumption. We will also see more businesses explore sustainable energy sources, such as wind and solar energy, with 9 out of ten businesses already planning to boost their sustainability-focused IT investments." Hybrid and edge computing trends There is a continuation of the trend towards hybrid and multi-cloud AI infrastructure across the region. Forty-five percent of organisations in ANZ now favour on-premises or hybrid AI environments, with only 38% remaining reliant solely on public cloud. Edge computing is also experiencing increased uptake in industries such as mining, manufacturing, healthcare and retail, where real-time data processing at the source is essential. One application is Truis's use of Lenovo ThinkEdge servers to deploy in-store AI and analytics, aimed at optimising customer experiences and streamlining operations. Data centre growth Expansion in data centre infrastructure is expected to continue rapidly, with Australia already among the top five global data centre hubs by size. Current projections indicate 250 operational data centres with a need for roughly 175 additional facilities by 2030 to keep pace with demand, particularly for AI-driven services. Investment is being driven mainly by hyperscale providers and supported by governmental initiatives to fast-track approvals and establish innovation zones. "The data centre market in Australia has experienced significant expansion due to the rise of data consumption across the region. Forecasts predict that deployable data centre capacity in Australia will more than double by 2030, from 1,350 megawatts in 2024. A key focus for governments and enterprises will be balancing increasing energy demands and operational complexities with growing expectations for AI infrastructure, especially as the Australian government is aiming to achieve 82% renewable energy in electricity grids by 2030." AI verticalisation and agentic AI The verticalisation of large language models (LLMs), where they are tailored for specific sectors, is beginning to take hold in the region. More than half of APJ organisations are now fine-tuning and integrating models with their internal data instead of building from scratch, particularly in areas such as IT operations, software development, and cybersecurity. While broader deployment is expected later in the year, the initial adoption signals significant momentum. Agentic AI, defined as AI agents capable of independent action and decision-making, is moving from pilot projects to early deployment. Interest is strong, with 69% of ANZ executives prioritising agentic AI and 38% already testing solutions. Lenovo reports practical benefits including up to eight times faster content creation and a 50% improvement in customer service efficiency from its Hybrid AI Advantage with NVIDIA partnership. "Agentic AI, or AI agents, capable of independent action and decision-making, are set to make waves over the next year and drive not just personalisation, but complete individualisation. For the first time, AI is no longer just a generative knowledge base or chat interface. It is both reactive and proactive—a true partner. Gartner estimates that nearly 15% of day-to-day work decisions will be taken autonomously through agentic AI by 2028. AI agents will leverage local LLMs enabling real-time interaction with a user's personal knowledge base without relying on cloud processing. This offers enhanced data privacy, as all interactions remain locally stored on the device, and increased productivity, as the agent helps to automate and simplify a wide range of tasks, from document management, meeting summaries to content generation. We will also see the emergence of personal digital twins, which are clusters of agents that that capture many different aspects of our personalities and act on many different facets of need. For example, a digital twin might comprise a grocery buying agent, a language translation agent, a travel agent, etc. This cluster of agents become a digital twin when all of them work together, in sync with the individual's data and needs." Skills and future trends The ongoing growth in AI and digital technology continues to place pressure on skillsets, with 45% of Asia-Pacific enterprises reporting difficulty in recruiting AI talent. Investment in upskilling and internal training remains a challenge and an area of focus for organisations aiming to close the gap between ambitions and practical implementation.

Exclusive: Logistics firms face rising OT cyber threats amid global tensions
Cyber attackers are increasingly targeting logistics and supply chain networks, aiming to destabilise nations and gain strategic leverage without ever crossing a border. According to Leon Poggioli, ANZ Regional Director at Claroty, the recent cyber espionage affecting logistics firms supporting Ukraine is not an isolated trend but part of a broader pattern. "There's two key reasons nation states do this," he explained during a recent interview with TechDay. "One is to disrupt the other nation's defences, and the other is to put political pressure on the general public by interfering with their supply chains." These attacks frequently target operational technology (OT) systems - the core infrastructure behind physical processes in logistics, energy, manufacturing and healthcare. Poggioli said attackers exploit connectivity in these environments to carry out sabotage remotely. "A lot of these environments have some kind of external connectivity, so that gives an attacker an ability to remotely trigger a cyber attack and disrupt those supply chains." In some cases, tactics have extended to disrupting weapons infrastructure, such as drones. "When one nation uses drones, the other will defend itself by trying to jam signals and disrupt that infrastructure," he explained. Compared to IT systems, OT vulnerabilities can be far more complex and risky to remediate. Poggioli noted that in OT, even small changes can impact safety and operations. "In the IT world, it's easy to push patches out," he said. "In OT, even a minor change can disrupt operations, so remediation needs to be more targeted." Claroty's platform is built to help organisations quickly cut through large volumes of vulnerability data to find what really matters. "A site may have 1,000 vulnerabilities, but we can whittle that down to the five that make the most impact," he said. "That becomes a manageable number that a cyber leader and OT asset manager can act on within weeks." Recent data from Claroty's global survey of cybersecurity professionals reinforces the growing financial and operational risks posed by cyber attacks on cyber-physical systems (CPS). Nearly half of respondents (45%) reported financial impacts of $500,000 USD or more from such attacks in the past year, with over a quarter suffering losses of at least $1 million. These costs were largely driven by lost revenue, recovery expenses, and employee overtime. "It's a growing concern across multiple sectors, particularly in chemical manufacturing, energy, and mining – more than half of organisations in those sectors reported losses over half a million dollars," Poggioli said. Ransomware remains a major burden, especially in sectors like healthcare where 78% of organisations reported paying over $500,000 to regain access to encrypted systems. "These are real costs, not theoretical risks," he added. "And they're rising." Operational downtime is also widespread. Nearly half of global respondents experienced more than 12 hours of downtime following an attack, with one-third suffering outages lasting a full day or more. "When operations halt, the financial and reputational damage mounts quickly," Poggioli said. He added that one of the most pressing vulnerabilities is the level of remote access in these environments. "We're seeing around 45% of CPS assets connected to the internet," he said. "Most of that is done through VPNs that were never built for OT security." Third-party access is another growing concern, with 82% of respondents saying at least one cyber attack in the past year came through a supplier. Nearly half said five or more attacks stemmed from third-party connections, yet 63% admit they don't fully understand how these third parties are connected to their CPS environment. Poggioli pointed to this as a critical blind spot. "Legacy access methods and poor visibility are allowing attackers in through the back door," he said. Even more concerning is the risk from insiders. "You want to be able to trust your team, but someone with inside knowledge can do more damage than an external attacker," Poggioli said. "Even air-gapped environments need constant monitoring." A cyber attack on Denmark's power grid in 2023 served as a wake-up call. "One operator didn't even know they had the vulnerable firewall in their system," he said. "That's why visibility is so important. You can't secure what you don't know exists." While preparedness across the logistics sector varies, Poggioli believes the industry is slowly recognising the strategic value of cybersecurity. "It's going to become a point of competitive advantage," he said. "Customers are going to start asking serious questions about cyber security and supply chain integrity." He drew a sharp distinction between cyber criminals and state-backed actors. "Cyber criminals want fast financial gain, but nation states are more focused on political objectives," he said. "They have better resources and longer timelines. That changes the game." Poggioli warned that just because no incident has occurred doesn't mean attackers aren't already embedded in critical networks. "There's growing evidence of adversaries nesting in these systems," he said. "My hypothesis is they're preparing for future conflict. If war breaks out, they're already in position to strike." For logistics firms looking to strengthen their defences, Poggioli said the first step is basic visibility. "Most people I speak to admit they don't know 100% what's out there or how it's connected," he said. "Start with an asset inventory. Once you have that, you can start risk modelling and reduce exposure." There are signs that resilience strategies are making a difference. According to the Claroty report, 56% of professionals now feel more confident in their CPS systems' ability to withstand cyber attacks than they did a year ago, and 72% expect measurable improvements in the next 12 months. Still, Poggioli said complacency is not an option. "If you don't know how big the problem is, you won't know how to solve it," he said. "Once you understand the risks, you can act to protect your operations and show the business the value of cyber security."

"Many organisations today are still using back up technology that was never intended to support them in the wake of a cyberattack," said David Rajkovic, Regional Vice President, Australia and New Zealand at Rubrik. "Companies need a cyber resilience strategy that allows them to rapidly recover data and operations from a specific point in time, as close to the intrusion point as possible." Strategic growth and leadership Harbor's entry into ANZ is the first phase of its wider APAC growth strategy. The company aims to secure a significant share of future revenue from international markets and cites strong cultural alignment as a reason for choosing Australia as its initial launchpad in the region. Baker's appointment as Country Manager will see him report directly to Harbor's Chief Revenue Officer. His responsibilities cover the full spectrum of business operations in the region.
